Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me Review

Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me

For years I purchased expensive salon shampoos touting moisturizing properties for dry hair, only to have them dry out my hair. Finally I stumbled across a shampoo for dry hair that along with its conditioner, not only doesn't dry out my hair but leaves it looking shining. If I had first consulted Paula Begoun's book, I would have save myself a lot of money and bad hair days! I looked up all those shampoos claiming to moisturize dry hair, and Paula writes that they can dry out hair. I looked up the shampoo that worked and Paula not only gives it a favorable review, she lists it in "The Best Products" chapter under "Dry to very dry scalp and hair of any thickness." I appreciate that her product reviews contain a smiley, frowning or neutral face for quick reference, price per volume, a listing of what's in the product, and a statement or 2 about product, often with a mention of the type of hair it will or will not work well with.
In addition to 362 pages of product reviews and a 62 page section listing the best products for shampooing, conditioning and styling all types of hair, 191 pages provide an education about hair and the hair care industry. Among the topics covered are: Common ingredients in shampoos and why they're there, scientific causes of bad hair days, hair care basics, perming hair, coloring hair, and many more as you can see in the index. I'm not a cosmetologist, but Paula's information basically agrees with what my trusted hair stylist tells me. Also, I appreciate that Paula devoted a chapter to animal testing and gives a 1999 list of companies that do and do not test on animals, along with a website for getting a more up-to-date.
I'm giving 4 stars because of my one reservation about buying the book: as new hair care products become available and old ones go off the market or change their formulas, this book becomes dated. My January 2000 edition is nearly 3 years old and already I couldn't find a new shampoo that I tried, although since she gave all the other shampoos in that line a good rating, I correctly assumed it was good. If you're considering buying this book, I recommend buying a recent edition, or checking Paula's website, cosmeticscop.com, and seeing if a new edition is forthcoming. Other than that one hesitation, I wholeheartly recommend this book to everyone who has hair!

With thousands of hair care products on supermarket, drugstore, and salon shelves, each with its own grandiose claims, consumers are understandably confused. In this new edition - with over 75 percent new material - the "Ralph Nader of rouge" applies her high standards to shampoos and conditioners, styling gels, mousses, hairsprays, dyes, and permanents, and also devotes a chapter to the concerns women of color may have, from relaxing techniques to braiding and weaving.

I was surfing the net for a hair care book that would help me with my hair problems. I read the reviews for Beautiful Black Hair and ordered it. My hair was dry, brittle, and thinning in spots. I read Shamboosie's book and was so impressed with the information that it provided, it was hard to put it down. I finished it in one day. I ran out and purchased the products he recommended that same night and he is absolutely correct, the right products make a world of difference. I followed the formula's he recommended and saw results after the second treatment. My hair looks and feels so much better. He knocks no-lye relaxers and that's okay because I don't use it anyway. However, I do know people with very beautiful healthy hair that does. As he points out, the key to a great head of hair is conditioner, conditioner, conditioner. Definitely one of the best hair care books on the market especially for women or men with flat cell (kinky) hair.

Yes, its the best for the money. I have a tester kit and it does remove chlorine and other things.
Longevity wise, our last filter lasted over a year...The sad part is it still ships with a cheaply-made stinky hose. Just used the old hose.
We should contact the company, have them take a good looooong whiff before putting it in a box and sending it out to us customers. Cheers.

My husband is allergic to chlorine, so a shower filter is an absolute necessity. We've probably tried every filter that the home supply stores carry -- and this one makes all of those look like toy equipment.
It's not that the filters you get at Home Depot don't work. They do; they're certainly an improvement over the hard water we have, not to mention clearing out the chlorine. The thing is, they don't last long. The filters don't last three months, and we've never had the gizmo itself survive for more than a year. Usually, they broke in a dramatic manner, spraying the entire bathroom as they cracked with a loud bang. Depending on the design, they were also awkward to install, especially if you have a non-mundane shower head.
We've had the Aquasana for six months, and I've just bought the first replacement filter for it. This is definitely a significant improvement over those "basic" filters, and it's worth the extra money. The filtering is MUCH better -- I can tell the difference in that "I just feel cleaner" way -- and the filter lasts twice as long. It wasn't a bad installation, either. If you go to the company's Web site, you can also sign up for the filters to be auto-shipped to you, which is a distinct time savings.
Yes, this one costs a little more than the "basic" units you'll find at Lowe's or Home Depot. And it's definitely worth the expense.
