Having just entered into home-owning (versus apartment-dwelling) I've embarked on a crash course in home improvement. So far, this book has been a good resource, especially in terms of =illustrating= what I'm supposed to do. I need the visual cues to understand how part A is supposed to fit into part B and so on. This is one book I think I will be referring to often.

I am now in week 5 of this very fun and easy camp. I've been trying it out with some friends at work and we are all seeing results. I think in the first week I saw major changes following Dr. Loretta's advice of changing my pillow case and my detergent. I have had way fewer blemishes and cut out some acne products that were actually doing more harm than good in the redness department. I am highly recommending this book to EVERYONE! It is truly fabulous and even the adorable cover makes me smile (people have asked me why I look so happy and bright the past few days!). Hats off to Dr. Loretta for writing such a helpful manual for navigating the cosmetics world!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I ordered this book because I wanted specifics. The info provided was very vague and I knew most of how these things work. And some, he would explain common sense things. This book is very good for younger people, under 15. If you are older, don't waste your time.

Architectural Working Drawings: Residential and Commercial Buildings Review

Architectural Working Drawings: Residential and Commercial Buildings
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My sixteen year old daughter is seriously interested in becoming an architect and this book is a great resource for her. William Spence has provided an excellent text for people to learn about architectural drawing in all its beginning aspects.
The 24 chapters and 19 appendices fall into three broad sections. The first 9 chapters teach the student about the tools and materials used by architects to make their drawings, technical sketching, various drafting techniques, the basics of computer graphics workstations (this material is dated, but still good as an introduction), using the computer for architectural design and drafting (again, dated material but the process is still sound), architectural drafting standards, reproduction of drawings, the preliminary design process, and contract documents.
The second section encompasses chapter 11-24 and teach the student about drawing foundations & footings, floor - wall & roof construction (separate chapters for light construction and commercial buildings), the title sheet and site plan, floor plans, foundation plans, architectural sections, architectural details, elevations, roof plans & framing plans, schedules, electrical plans, heating & air-conditioning systems, plumbing plans, and pictorial drawing.
The third section are the 19 appendices that provide abbreviations, selected metric conversion factors, and many different kinds of symbols used in drawings as well as ratings, load information, and various tables as well as a glossary.
The chapters present the material effectively and helpfully. They teach the student knew terms, sometimes provide a glossary, the questions act as a chapter review, and the laboratory projects present the student with drawing challenges that help build skills and confidence necessary to move to the next chapter.
I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, and yet the material here makes me want to learn to draw this stuff. So, it must be motivating!

Dinner Is Served Review

Dinner Is Served
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In "Dinner is Served", Arthur Inch hopes to leave us with the rapidly disappearing rules for old-fashioned gracious living. With his extensive experience in service, he is most definitely qualified to do so, and yet he only offers glimpses of his total knowledge. While many of the things in this book will never actually be used by the average person due to their expense and impracticality, there is still much that can and should be put to use in every-day living. While some may view these rules or standards as superfluous or even snobbish, the fact is that these have all been developed over many years and each has its own very legitimate reason for being. The complaints I have with this book are ones that could have been easily remedied. When discussing and describing the various types of tableware, more pictures would have been useful. Only select pieces have been illustrated, leaving the others subject to the whims of the imagination. And while he mentions several different napkin folds, and even specifies his own personal favorite fold, he never explains how to make these folds or shows how they are supposed to look. The sections on how to be the perfect host/hostess and guest, and on how to eat certain different foods could prove to be useful in reducing the potential for embarrassment in the future, and the section explaining the hierarchy of menservants was quite interesting, even if only as a history lesson that serves to demonstrate the logistical nightmares that formal dining can create.

Elegant entertaining is always in style, and who better to explain the finer points of the art of the table than Arthur Inch, a veteran English butler who served as technical advisor for the film Gosford Park? With a historian's appreciation for the traditions of fine English homes, he discusses the elements of the table, including flatware and silver, china and glassware, serving vessels, and table decorations, as well as table and serving etiquette. "Although most of the book is written in a formal tone, the writers aren't above occasionally letting loose, and they amuse themselves with such pretty tricks as making music with glassware. This guide is fun to read as a light history as well as for preparation for a formal dinner. --Publishers Weekly

Taylor's Guide to Orchids: More Than 300 Orchids, Photographed and Described, for Beginning to Expert Gardeners (Taylor's Guides)

Afraid to grow orchids? Fear no more, because this book explains everything we need to know, from how orchids grow in nature (mostly on sides of trees!) and what we have to do to make them happy on the windowsill.
judywhite is well-known in the orchid world for her wonderful way of explaining the mysteries behind how to grow them, and this book, which she also photographed (there are 300 gorgeous color photos depicting every genus in the encyclopedia section) is not only well-written, it is well-organized and covers everything from pest control to potting materials (the best resource on this subject in particular that I've ever come across) to light to getting the darned things to bloom again. The second half of the book is the encyclopedia section, describing not only species, but also man-made intergeneric hybrids, with a lot of information you can't find anywhere else in one place.
I definitely agree with others that if you only get one orchid book - whether you are just a beginner or truly advanced - this is *the* orchid book!
