"This inspiring title offers many ways that readers can adopt a greener lifestyle without going overboard. Illustrated with photos, this is based on the author's own experiences. Insted of going cold turkey, there are many small lifestyle changes that will ultimately make a big difference." - Connie Krochmal, Bellaonline

You've been wondering how to reduce your eco-footprint but are intimidated by the idea that nothing less than installing solar panels and going off the grid will work. Nonsense—no need to be scared off by all that "green" noise. You have two goals: saving your money and saving resources—and you can do that by making quiet, gradual changes over time and still living your life the way you live it now.

This is not about ripping out all the offending objects in your house in one afternoon and upgrading with the latest in high-tech green toys. The author outlines how he and his wife first began making small changes around the house to save electricity. They cut their power bill in half. Then they moved to recycling and brought their garbage down to almost nothing. Chip Haynes walks the reader through every low-impact, low-tech solution—from power to recycling to shopping to transportation—with the important distinction that it won't cost you more than you save. You can live light and go green the easy way, within your budget and stress-free. You really can.

Wearing Smaller Shoes is all about making small changes over time, and staying comfortable with everything you do. It's about going green without having to brag about it. (But you could if you wanted to.)

Chip Haynes is a graphic artist and writer living in the center of suburbia in Pinellas County, Florida, with his wife, the lovely JoAnn.

The Crooked Mile: Through peak oil, biofuels, hybrid cars, and global climate change to reach a brighter future Review

The Crooked Mile: Through peak oil, biofuels, hybrid cars, and global climate change to reach a brighter future
Average Reviews:

A fellow car enthusiast sent me The Crooked Mile as a gift, and so I had to read it. This was a good gift, worth the reading. While the ideas are developed based on cars, fossil fuel and climate weirdness, The Crooked Mile is a very readable introduction to the much bigger problem of how we (globally) move to a sustainable future.
It offers one of the best assessments of the challenges we face in replacing fossil fuels as our cheap energy supply. Kevin Clemens clearly introduces the idea that we need a multiplicity of solutions - both for energy sources and for transportation.
As a student of sustainable practices, I find that this is easily the most readable, and least preachy, book I've read to date. While focused on the car and transportation, most the the major issues are raised in the context of why the car poses a problem.
As a nitpicker, I'll note that there are a few bloopers - Double check numbers before you cite them. A minor negative in an otherwise very good exposition of the the issues.

Americans love their automobiles. More than a mode of transportation, cars provide us with freedom, social equality, and entertainment. The price we pay for our infatuation with four wheels is high. Air pollution, global climate change, energy insecurity, injury and death, and urban sprawl are fair charges against the automobile. Some critics suggest we abandon the automobile. This is not likely. In The Crooked Mile, award-winning journalist and author, Kevin Clemens, examines the past, present, and future of energy and infrastructure to take us through the challenges of depleting oil, global climate change, innovative automotive technologies, and new concepts in personal mobility to reach a better transportation future.

I am going to college right now, trying to learn about what I am going to be doing for the rest of my life. I don't have time to learn a whole new subject, and that's what I like about this book. It tells me what I need to eat and I eat it. Simple.

The Chicago Great Western Railway (IL) (Images of Rail) Review

The Chicago Great Western Railway (IL) (Images of Rail)

My father worked as a section foreman on the Chicago Great Western when I was young. I grew up living along the tracks and watched the trains passed by. This book brought back a lot of memories, especially the picture of the old storage building at Holcomb, Illinois.

The Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW) was a Midwestern line that operated in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Kansas, and Nebraska. Although this territory was served by much larger systems, the CGW was able to retain its share of passenger and freight business for 83 years through aggressive management, dedicated employees, innovations, and efficient operations. By the early 1960s, however, the growth of the trucking industry and airlines had taken away a substantial amount of the business previously handled by railroads. The CGW would not survive as operating costs increased while revenues declined. The only solution was to consolidate with another railroad, and a favorable agreement was reached with the Chicago and North Western Railway (C&NW). At 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 1, 1968, the CGW ceased to exist, as it became part of the C&NW. Since that time, much of the system has been abandoned, and today only a few segments of former CGW trackage remain in service. This book provides nostalgic images and photographs of the operations, employees, locomotives, and stations of a little railroad that is now only a memory.

I think this book is filled with wonderful information! I wish I had a copy of it when I ventured out into the "Real World"! This book contains some very useful information on how to clean your house, how to do your laundry, when your food is spoiled, etc. and etc.! This book would make a great gift for a college freshman just leaving home for the first time! However I am 31 and I actually learned quite a bit from this book! It's a very good book to have in your library for those moments that you need some guidance!

This is a book about the basic life skills that are not always taught in school or at home. Did you ever wonder when you were getting ready to leave home for the first time, if your parents had taught you everything you needed to know to survive on your own?Did you know how to do laundry; clean a home; balance a checkbook or cook a meal? Were you aware of the different types of deposits required to either rent or buy a home?If the answers were 'yes" - good for the role models that you had! Thank them every chance you get! If the answers were 'no" to most of these questions - don't be discouraged - there is help on the way! It is my hope that this book will help those who need it and will be shared with others who can benefit from it. This is not a 'be all, end all" book and it is not intended to replace knowledge received from professionals trained in certain areas. As a Registered Nurse, Life Skills Expert and a mother, I want to be able to help out the young adults of today and the next generation to come.

Logs, Wind and Sun: Handcraft Your Own Log Home ... Then Power It with Nature Review

Logs, Wind and Sun: Handcraft Your Own Log Home ... Then Power It with Nature
Average Reviews:

Logs, Wind and Sun is one of those rare books that is both packed with useful information and enjoyable to read. I only wish it had been available five years ago when my husband and I started drawing up plans for our own log home. We spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars trying to get utilities to our remote mountain building site. This book clearly lays out alternative power solutions that can give you the freedom to live with all the modern conveniences you need miles from the nearest power pole. The authors personal experience provides the framework for the book, but they have obviously done their homework, and all their recommendations are backed up by copious facts. The book is generously sprinkled with photos and illustrations that de-mystify and explain and personal stories that entertain and inspire. LaVonne's Verities and Rex's Maxims give you personal insights and quips. And the writing is several notches above most other how-to books, offering emotional insights into the process of building your own home, as well as the more expected practical fare. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever dreamed about building a log home.
