What to Eat if You Have Diabetes Review

What to Eat if You Have Diabetes
Average Reviews:

I was very excited to receive this book, but was disappointed upon reading it. I am a librarian who specializes in biological information, and I found this book to be full of both scientific and editorial errors.
The authors can't decide if there are 9 or 11 essential amino acids (most authorities say 8 or 9), and they sometimes mix up amino acids with fatty acids. These and most of the other biological errors are so basic that a high-school biology student should know better. As for the writing, I found non-sensical sentences and entire paragraphs misplaced (such as two paragraphs on legumes under the heading of fruit, instead of the previous heading of legumes where it clearly belonged). It appears that the text was not actually reviewed by a professional editor before it was published.
These scientific and editorial errors are extensive and can make the information presented somewhat confusing. Even worse, it indicates a lack of quality that makes all the information presented highly questionable. This is particularly bad because the authors often push very controversial points of view, which really need to be backed up by a high quality review of good science.
If you do read this book, I highly recommend that you also read books by other authors to get a more balanced view of how to live with diabetes.

Home Made Simple: Fresh Ideas to Make Your Own Review

Home Made Simple: Fresh Ideas to Make Your Own
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am of the generation that learned homemaking skills from my parents and grandparents, and from my home-ec experiences in school. But now, the plethora of HGTV shows, Food Network cook-offs and self-help books, it is possible to learn both old and new skills without setting foot in a classroom or sitting at your grandmother's knee. That said, there are few shows that are memorable, and few books that are worth keeping or passing on. This book might just be an exception.
Quite a few of the ideas in Home Made Simple are fresh takes on the tried-and-true. It is the presentation that makes the book a joy to browse through. The five sections are "Organize," "Cook," "Decorate," "Celebrate," and "Garden." Would you like to have a traditional tea party? In Celebrate Living, you get history and background, directions for brewing the perfect pot, recipes for homemade natural teas, and ideas for tea treats, including chai tea squares. All this is provided in a section labeled "light and fun tea party."
Home Made Simple is a great book for a young married, a single person, or someone who wants new ideas to spark an in-home revolution. The ideas are modern and innovative, and yet the suggestions and recipes are based on much of the cooking, decorating and gardening ideas that have been around for generations. It is an interactive book, as well. Pages marked "work space" where you can make notes of recipes you liked, changes you implemented, or pairings of food and beverages that you have tried.
With Christmas coming soon, you might want to consider the "Simple Mango Chutney" recipe, with its accompanying gift-giving suggestions. Or create an indoor herb garden for an elderly friend, or a decorated woven mat for the doorstep. You can find creative thoughts for picture frames, and keeping family treasures.
Whether you want to try something new and different, such as a progressive tapas party, or something with the touches of old-fashioned family fun, such as having a family baking day, (making bread and cookies,) you will find the blueprints here in this book to make it happen.
A great wedding gift, or as a family treasure, Home Made Simple reminds me of the old book my grandmother had, called Inquire Within; between its battered leather covers I found receipts (the old-time term for recipes) for tonics, bread, salves, Christmas tree decorations and more. This book has the same flavor, modernized. Perhaps it too will become a family favorite.

Buying a Home in Italy: A Survival Handbook Review

Buying a Home in Italy: A Survival Handbook

an informative book which unravels the mysteries of setting up home in italy. the book does not romanticise the aspects of venturing into the italian real estate market, nor does it dissuade the reader from pursuing the venture any farther. rather, the book provides an objective and practical guide to house buying in italy. it also has helpful information about everyday living in italy such as setting up a bank account. i have read several books on the subject and recommend this book thoroughly. (i also recommend victoria pybus's "living and working in italy".)

I think this book is filled with wonderful information! I wish I had a copy of it when I ventured out into the "Real World"! This book contains some very useful information on how to clean your house, how to do your laundry, when your food is spoiled, etc. and etc.! This book would make a great gift for a college freshman just leaving home for the first time! However I am 31 and I actually learned quite a bit from this book! It's a very good book to have in your library for those moments that you need some guidance!

This is a book about the basic life skills that are not always taught in school or at home. Did you ever wonder when you were getting ready to leave home for the first time, if your parents had taught you everything you needed to know to survive on your own?Did you know how to do laundry; clean a home; balance a checkbook or cook a meal? Were you aware of the different types of deposits required to either rent or buy a home?If the answers were 'yes" - good for the role models that you had! Thank them every chance you get! If the answers were 'no" to most of these questions - don't be discouraged - there is help on the way! It is my hope that this book will help those who need it and will be shared with others who can benefit from it. This is not a 'be all, end all" book and it is not intended to replace knowledge received from professionals trained in certain areas. As a Registered Nurse, Life Skills Expert and a mother, I want to be able to help out the young adults of today and the next generation to come.

I bought this thinking it would be great, but I was sorely mistaken. 150 pages are taken up with diet book mubo-jumbo. I wanted a cookbook, not a speech on healthy living. I already live healthy, that's why I wanted a good COOKbook - not diet regime. Don't waste your money on this if you are only looking for recipes like I was.

Even though I am an experienced herb grower, I very much enjoyed this book because it had so many new and fun ideas. The chapter on homemade cosmetics was probably my favorite. I have made the "Gardener's Hand Salve", "Lavender Cologne" and the "Bath Oil". They all were great! I gave them away as gifts too. Be sure to try the Chocolate Mint Pudding recipe too. It is to die for!!

Food Bites: The Science of the Foods We Eat Review

Food Bites: The Science of the Foods We Eat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book due to a mutual love of food and science, but this piece of work really let me down on both ends of the equation. It's poorly written, seemingly for either the 4-8 yr-old demographic or maybe adults who have never ever encountered food in their entire lifetime. For example, a chapter on wine and chocolate should have been focused on the mutual health benefits of these two marvelous foods. Instead, we discover that both come from plants, and sensory attributes are affected by the climate! Groundbreaking stuff. When it should be swinging for the fences, this book opts to bunt time and time again.

Food Bites is an easy-to-read, often humorous book on the scientific basis of the foods we eat, and answers those pesky, niggling questions such as: Is the quality of beer really affected by the type of water used? and Processed foods: good or bad? Readers will be captivated by this superbly written book, especially so as their guides are Professor Richard Hartel, professor of Food Engineering at UW-Madison, along with his daughter, AnnaKate Hartel. Professor Hartel has for the last four years penned a witty and illuminating column on all aspects of food science for the Capital Times of Madison, and his weekly wisdom has now been collected into a single publication. With a huge and growing interest in the science of food, this treasure trove of knowledge and practical information, in 60 bite-sized chunks, is sure to be a bestseller.

Guide to Wild Foods and Useful Plants Review

Guide to Wild Foods and Useful Plants
Average Reviews:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Nyerges's book is weak on its photos and plant identification but is excellent as a companion book to all those boring plant ID texts. His book provides excellent background and practical information from someone who has actually used these plants. While geared for California, many of the plants are found across the U.S. especially in the West.

The Complete Book of Herbs: A Practical Guide to Growing and Using Herbs Review

The Complete Book of Herbs: A Practical Guide to Growing and Using Herbs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Look no further, this book will give you everything you ever wanted to know and more about herbs. The only thing else you might want is a more elaborate book on herb garden design...but don't be dismayed the section on herb garden design is very complete and inspiring.
ACTUALLY TELLS YOU HOW TO USE THEM! My wife and I love to use herbs particularly culinary, tea, and medicinal. This was the only book we came across that had detailed and useful information that was easily understood on how to use herbs in practical ways.
The book covers garden design, making herbal decorations, use in the kitchen with many recipes, household uses of herbs, beauty care use of herbs, essential oils, health uses of herbs, cultivation and harvesting of herbs and a very complete index of over 100 herbs. The herbal index is great. It contains full color photographs of the foliage, flowers, seed, dried leaves, and roots as applicable to each herb. A short history is given along with cultivation, harvest information, and uses (including what parts for what use).
It has a nice section on making potpourri. The beauty use section is complete with recipes. The table of essential oils is very complete and useful. The health section describes different general preparation techniques and an A-Z guide of ailments with accompanying herbal remedies. The herb cultivating section is complete and useful.
The title says it all, get this book and you will learn something new about herbs every time you pick it up. We reference it all the time. It is invaluable to any gardening or health library.
