Natural Healing Review

Natural Healing

Suffering from psoriatic arthritis for five years and being on conventional arthritis treatment for two of those years still left me very symptomatic.
I then read this book and it gave me SIMPLE instructions on how to specifically alter my diet to remove symptoms of the arthritis almost completely. Although the disease is still slowly progressing, I no longer suffer from the symptoms like I used to. Its still there, but to a degree that my quality of life is no longer held hostage by pain.
This book showed me the cause/effect relationship that diet plays in chronic disease that NONE of my doctors understand.

Nutritional Herbology : A Reference Guide to Herbs Review

Nutritional Herbology : A Reference Guide to Herbs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is one of very few that list the nutrients found in common western and Chinese herbs, allowing one to find which herbs are good sources of, say selenium or beta carotene. As such it is an important addition to any herbalist's library.
However like most food science analyses, the book lists nutrients found in the plant, not nutrients which can or will be absorbed by the human body. For example, aluminium intake is closely regulated by the gut flora and excess aluminum is normally excreted unless that flora has been decimated by antibiotics or unhealthy diets. Its presence in an herb does not automatically mean that an herb like echinacea, which rates moderately high in aluminum, should be avoided.
The actions of herbs often go far beyond their constituents. Yellow dock, for example is not especially high in iron, yet yellow dock tincture (which contains very little iron at all) can in low doses allow the body to overcome anemia far faster than iron supplements.
However with those caveats, the book is highly recommended. It also lists actions of herbs, the body systems affected, folk history and use of the plants, medicinal properties, chemical constituents, nutrients of note and typical dialy doses in various forms. Of particular note are traditional combination formulas which are analyzed like the single herbs for their nutritional profiles.
A worthwhile reference for those seriously interested in herbal medicine and nutrition.

Your Non-Toxic Pregnancy Review

Your Non-Toxic Pregnancy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book while traveling in the North of Ireland, so I expected it to be a European based book. Indeed it is, however, the author was kind enough to do some American research, as well, so it is definitely usable (and recommended) for Americans.
My first "chemical-free" pregnancy book was The Complete Organic Pregnancy by Deidre Dolan and Alexandra Zissu, and while I did enjoy it, I found it lacking in many areas (such as recommendations and resources for finding less toxic products). Because of this, I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up a copy of Your Non-Toxic Pregnancy. Not only does it back up its claims with sound research (from many different worldwide-respected organizations), but it gives many different suggestions for how to live more organically.
The book is organized well and filled with attractive photos of glowing pregnant mamas-to-be. The information is consise. The suggestions are do-able.
The author devotes a whole section to toxins in beauty products, and includes recipes for homemade alternatives that I found especially interesting and helpful. Another section describes the dangers in modern household cleaning products, and gives a list of eco-friendly options. And these subjects are just the beginning.
I really cannot give enough praise to how well this book is put together. There are many books out there screaming the dangers of many of our modern-day luxuries, but do absolutely nothing to help us find better, safer, and more eco-friendly ways of living. This book has an alternative for every not-so-safe product out there. Many of the alternatives are UK products, but almost all can be ordered online.
As a quick side note, I've noticed many reviews for this book (on other sites) and reviews for The Complete Organic Pregnancy state that the authors are trying to scare you into doing impossible things. I say for a fact that none of these changes are impossible to make. Yes, the information is scary, but this does not mean it is fear culture-based. Someone needs to put this information out there, and I find it unwise and even immature to criticize those few who are brave enough to do it. /rant

Every expectant mother wants to provide a safe and protective environment for her unborn baby, but there are hidden hazards in almost everything we use or ingest, such as arsenic in eyeshadow and hormones in chicken. Women aged 20–45 are especially vulnerable to toxic substances and their effects, and even more so when they are pregnant. Yet it is often hard to choose the right products given manufacturers' often misleading claims and the amount of technical knowledge required to "translate" the components of many items. This guidemakes clear the substances found in common household, food, and office items and reveals the practices that can be damaging to both baby and mother. It provides a guide to safe commercial alternatives as well as quick-and-easy recipes to create natural preparations. It is the ultimate guide to ensuring that home, workspace, leisure-time activities, food, skin care, and cosmetics remain hazard- and stress-free.

Even though I am an experienced herb grower, I very much enjoyed this book because it had so many new and fun ideas. The chapter on homemade cosmetics was probably my favorite. I have made the "Gardener's Hand Salve", "Lavender Cologne" and the "Bath Oil". They all were great! I gave them away as gifts too. Be sure to try the Chocolate Mint Pudding recipe too. It is to die for!!

The Complete Book of Nutritional Healing: The Top 100 Medicinal Foods and Supplements and the Diseases They Treat Review

The Complete Book of Nutritional Healing: The Top 100 Medicinal Foods and Supplements and the Diseases They Treat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF NUTRITIONAL HEALING is for the reader whose knowledge of nutrition is a limited one. This approach can be either good or bad, but in this case Deborah Mitchell has made the right choice. Mitchell divides the book into three parts:
In the first section, she lists alphabetically some eighty-three common ailments. She describes the general characteristics of each, using a level of detail that is reasonably bereft of jargon. Mitchell adds their causes and how diet and supplementation may prove useful. Readers who are health care professionals will find little to grouse about since Mitchell's advice is thoroughly conventional.
In the second section, she lists one hundred and seven medicinal foods ranging alphabetically from apples to yogurt. She presents each food with an historical overview of its origins, followed by a listing of its nutritional components, ending with its health benefits. Again, the level of complexity and detail is designed for the lay person.
The final section lists twenty-five common commercially available supplements. I have a slight problem here since Mitchell omits very many others that can be quite useful such as Carnosine, grapeseed, and Acetyl L-Carnitine. Overall, this book is a worthwhile starting point for the nutritional novice.

Kids, Herbs & Health: A Practical Guide to Natural Remedies Review

Kids, Herbs and Health: A Practical Guide to Natural Remedies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am writing to highly recommend this book, Kids, Herbs, and Health, to parents and health practitioners alike. It is absolutely unique- the first of its kind to address herbal remedies for children in a complete and scientifically sound manner. My perspective is unique because I am a scientist (I hold a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry), a new Mom, and because I am intensely interested in herbs.
Mavor and White have done an outstanding job of explaining complex health/biochemical issues so that parents can make informed healthcare choices for their children. These topics include, but are not limited to, the pros and cons of antiobiotic use, the advantages and disadvantages of over-the-counter cold medicines, the safety of using herbs for kids, etc. I am impressed by the comprehensive nature of the book. Topics range from herbal treatments for common ailments such as colds, ear infections, sore throats, and colic, to treatments for less frequent problems such as attention deficit disorder, sleep and psychological problems. The herbal remedies the authors' suggest are supported by results from numerous clinical studies. Among herbal medicine guides, the science in this book is outstanding.
As a new Mom, I have found this book incredibly practical and useful. In every chapter there are recommendations for appropriate herbal remedies, as well as symptoms that indicate the child should see a doctor, and a wealth of other helpful information (for example, elevating the head of your child's bed during ear infections). The authors include the soundest advice on nutrition I've seen in books of this nature. I love the recipe for the "immune-building" soup! For the people who would like to be self-sufficient and save money, there are many recipes and instructions for home preparation of the herbal glycerites recommended for various medical conditions (i.e. the "runny-nose glycerite"). I have begun to make many of these glycerites during my son's well-times, so that they'll be ready when the need arises.
The book is easy to read, and, surprisingly for a book packed with so much information, I can sit and read it much like a novel. I appreciate the authors preparing this book. I'm certain it's going to positively impact the health of my child

The Herbal Body Book: A Natural Approach to Healthier Hair, Skin, and Nails Review

The Herbal Body Book: A Natural Approach to Healthier Hair, Skin, and Nails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a lot of great info and recipes, but if you are not an experinced soapmaker, you probably will not have the ingredients you need. First there are a lot of things you have to get at the grocery/drug store: distilled water, glycerine, corn meal, oatmeal, olive oil, baking soda, cornstarch, honey, vegetable oil, vodka, witch hazel, epsom salts, castor oil, etc. Then you have to get a lot of things from mail order or specialty stores, like essentail oils, jojoba oil, coconut oil, herbs, sea salts, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, benzoin, beeswax, cosmetic clays. Another point you have to take into consideration is that about 1/2 of these recipes have to be made each time you use them; you can't store them. There are some recipes you can make and store, but not a lot. However, if you do have a lot of these ingredients, and want to make homemade products for yourself, this is a great book to buy. It is definitely worth the money. And if you are even remotely interested in getting this book, then you must be interested in herbs and natural body products, so you probably wouldn't mind purchasing the ingredients.

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal Herbs Review

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal Herbs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Planting the Future provides both motivation and instruction for saving medicinal plants. The public's growing realization of the healing potential of plants is positive, but over-harvesting has led to a decline in native stands of many plants. Rosemary Gladstar has gathered a stellar team of writers to address the issue. The index reads like a who's-who of the herbal world. More than 30 plants are addressed in individual articles written by herbalists who know and love them. A grower of any size can use the information, the backyard up to a large sanctuary. A gardener can find the plants best suited their area, as well as how to propagate and care for them. Once grown, there is information about the preparation and use of the plants. My own tiny urban medicinal garden is part of the effort to save valuable plants thanks to guidance from these leaders. Herbalists, native plant enthusiasts and conservationists will all find value in this book.

This book have been written with the power of love. Why do I say that? Because we can feel the compassion all along the chapter. I like to read someone who walk his talk. When I read someone, to be interested and stay interested all along the chapters, the words must resonate in me. It sure did! Otherwise, I would have felt bored pretty quickly. This book leads us through the coming paradigm shift : prevention and natural healing. For sure, it's experience at work! And, as we all know, no money can buy experience! The book is clear, well documented, and I did appreciate the author's integrity. I hope someone will translate this book in french very soon, because here, in Quebec, it would be a big hit, believe me, we need to know more about biomagnetic.

Kombucha Phenomenon : The Miracle Health Tea: How to Safely Make and Use Kombucha Review

Kombucha Phenomenon : The Miracle Health Tea: How to Safely Make and Use Kombucha
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Betsy is the person who brought the Kombucha into the United States in the early 90's. She's the expert. In her book she tells you all about it. She gives instructions exactly how to do it safely and how to get the best "tea" possible. The text is comfortable to read. Kombucha is not for smokers though as it tries to "houseclean" the body so smokers can't use it. Kombucha is something you slowly build up on so start with 1/8 cup and then slowly build to 1.5 cups a day over a period of a couple of weeks. Muscle tone, skin tone, energy, etc. will be much improved. A person feels better with it as it is nutrition in a glass. Generally you drink it on an empty stomach like mornings. You "process" it for a length of time (a week+)until the solution has "developed" to the ph needed. You need to use it up before it has gone to far past its best ph level; it can be too tart after it has aged to long. It requires a "start" and a piece of kombucha to begin--green tea/black tea bags, white sugar, pure water and a clean clear glass container, with some muslim on the top to protect it. That's the beginning of the story...Read the book. Try it. Its incredible.

Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals: A Comprehensive Guide to the Use of Essential Oils & Hydrosols with Animals Review

Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals: A Comprehensive Guide to the Use of Essential Oils and Hydrosols with Animals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an aromatherapist owned by 5 cats, it is hard for me to enjoy my work and keep the cats out of harm's way. Why, you wonder? Because essential oils can be very unsafe for use around cats. I had briefly read about this but did not realize just how important it was until I had the pleasure of my holistic vet recommending this new book.
Through a series of case studies, toxicology reports and veterinary research, Ms. Bell unravels the mystery of essential oil and hydrosol use with cats, presenting information that is both informative and engaging. After reading the cat section of this book, I felt fully capable of making informed and intelligent decisions about the use of aromatherapy with cats. I found Ms Bell's viewpoint refreshingly candid and well researched- allowing the reader the opportunity to form their own opinion on the topic or to explore it further through more detailed methods of toxicology and bloodwork. Safety is the key message here. I have Ms. Bell to thank for the livelihood of my cats. Before purchasing her book, I bought a Young Living video about using essential oils with animals. The video suggested putting essential oils undiluted on cat's paws, ear tips or stomach. Thank the Lord that I did not do this! I could have caused irreparable harm to my cats.
If you are owned by cats, and love aromatherapy, you must purchase this book- you won't be sorry, and your cats will thank you.
