Nutritional Herbology : A Reference Guide to Herbs Review

Nutritional Herbology : A Reference Guide to Herbs
Average Reviews:

This book is one of very few that list the nutrients found in common western and Chinese herbs, allowing one to find which herbs are good sources of, say selenium or beta carotene. As such it is an important addition to any herbalist's library.
However like most food science analyses, the book lists nutrients found in the plant, not nutrients which can or will be absorbed by the human body. For example, aluminium intake is closely regulated by the gut flora and excess aluminum is normally excreted unless that flora has been decimated by antibiotics or unhealthy diets. Its presence in an herb does not automatically mean that an herb like echinacea, which rates moderately high in aluminum, should be avoided.
The actions of herbs often go far beyond their constituents. Yellow dock, for example is not especially high in iron, yet yellow dock tincture (which contains very little iron at all) can in low doses allow the body to overcome anemia far faster than iron supplements.
However with those caveats, the book is highly recommended. It also lists actions of herbs, the body systems affected, folk history and use of the plants, medicinal properties, chemical constituents, nutrients of note and typical dialy doses in various forms. Of particular note are traditional combination formulas which are analyzed like the single herbs for their nutritional profiles.
A worthwhile reference for those seriously interested in herbal medicine and nutrition.

This useful guide provides basic information on a wide range of nutritional supplements, incorporating cutting edge findings in the fields of nutrition and supplementation. This updated edition includes information on newer supplements and herbal remedies like MSM, IP6, colostrum, olive leaf extract and saw palmetto.
In Chapter One: Nutrition, Diet and Wellness, the author provides the basics of nutrition, from the 4 basic nutrients to the micronutrients plus guidelines for selecting and preparing foods. This section includes an interesting article on phytochemicals (biologically active substances in plants that give them their color and flavour).
The chapters that follow provides an overview of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and water, explaining their functions in the body and then providing a detailed discussion of the individual vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The chapter on water discusses various types like tap, artesian, bottled, sparkling, distilled and natural spring water.
The chapter on anti-oxidants looks at a wide spectrum of substances, from Alpha-Lipoic Acid to Zinc. The next chapter deals with enzymes, their role in the body and how they interact with foods. This includes a list of commercially available digestive enzymes.
Natural Food Supplements are discussed in detail, from Acidophilus to Yeast; this section includes entries on SAMe, Phosphatidylserine, MSM, Melatonin, Glucosamine, DHEA, CoQ10, Colloidal Silver, Creatine and Pregnenolone, providing the latest information.
The last chapter is devoted to herbs, including essential oils, extracts, teas, tinctures and wines. Here one can find information on anything from Acerola to Yucca, divided into the parts of the plant that is used, its phytochemical and nutrient content, its actions and uses and further comments on the plant.
The valuable and handy guide concludes with a thorough index. Another excellent guide to supplements is Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible. For a more thorough treatment of nutritional healing, I recommend James and Phyllis Balch's extensive work Prescription For Nutritional Healing.

I bought this book last week and it's excellent value for money. It has all the information about vitamins and herbs; it gives recommendations as well as warnings; advice about specific ailments, and so much more. I was surprised at the depth of information given. For example, my doctor told me that the herb known as horsetail helped halt osteoporosis when taken along with calcium. He also recommended boron. Nowhere else have I found confirmation of that information but this book mentions both. Unfortunately, you will not find horsetail listed in the index. That is the only complaint I have about the book that, occasionally, just occasionally, something was not listed in the index that was referred to in the text. If you care about your health, I recommend it. It's a no-nonsense book.

The Complete Book of Nutritional Healing: The Top 100 Medicinal Foods and Supplements and the Diseases They Treat Review

The Complete Book of Nutritional Healing: The Top 100 Medicinal Foods and Supplements and the Diseases They Treat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF NUTRITIONAL HEALING is for the reader whose knowledge of nutrition is a limited one. This approach can be either good or bad, but in this case Deborah Mitchell has made the right choice. Mitchell divides the book into three parts:
In the first section, she lists alphabetically some eighty-three common ailments. She describes the general characteristics of each, using a level of detail that is reasonably bereft of jargon. Mitchell adds their causes and how diet and supplementation may prove useful. Readers who are health care professionals will find little to grouse about since Mitchell's advice is thoroughly conventional.
In the second section, she lists one hundred and seven medicinal foods ranging alphabetically from apples to yogurt. She presents each food with an historical overview of its origins, followed by a listing of its nutritional components, ending with its health benefits. Again, the level of complexity and detail is designed for the lay person.
The final section lists twenty-five common commercially available supplements. I have a slight problem here since Mitchell omits very many others that can be quite useful such as Carnosine, grapeseed, and Acetyl L-Carnitine. Overall, this book is a worthwhile starting point for the nutritional novice.

When I read the release copy for The Brain Wash: A Powerful, All-Natural Program to Protect Your Brain Against Alzheimer's, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Depression, Parkinson's and Other Diseases by Michelle Schoffro Cook, I thought that the concept sounded interesting. But for me, the reality was significantly different. I could have done without all the gloom and doom of the first part of the book. By the time I finished, I would have thought it was a minor miracle that everyone hadn't yet succumbed to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's by now based on the writings...
Contents:
Acknowledgments; Introduction - Your Brain Is at Risk; Your Marvellous Brain in Action
Part 1 - The Brain Killers: Heavy Metal and Your Brain; The Deadly Neurotoxins; Food, Pseudo-Foods, and Chemicals in Disguise
Part 2 - The Brain Defenders: A Gut Instinct for Brain Health; Protective Foods and Nutrients; Healing Herbs
Part 3 - The Ultimate Brain Health Program: The Brain Wash Plan; The Brain Wash Plan for Specific Brain Diseases; Natural Therapies to Boost Your Brain
Resources; Endnotes; Index; About the Author
Before we get too far into this review, let me state very clearly... I agree that diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's exist, and I have no problem with the theories that they may be caused in part by environmental and/or nutritional issues. Having said that, I don't think it's useful to say that pretty much everything we eat, drink, breathe, or touch will somehow put very bad things in our body and guarantee we'll die early. Part 1 of the book is where I got off on the wrong foot. Heavy metals such as cadmium, aluminum, and mercury are explained, symptoms of poisoning are listed, and sources of these poisons are listed. The symptom lists are enough to cause hypochondriacs to have a field day. Just about any ache or pain can be found in one of the lists (except for the fabled four hour... you know.) And the source list encompasses pretty much everything you have in your house, car, kitchen, and refrigerator. So if you're living a relatively typical life, face it... you're toast. And toast is on the list too if you're toast with white bread.
Getting into parts 2 and 3, you start to learn what you can do to clean up the damage already in your body, as well as stave off additional problems. There's less gloom and doom here, but you could go crazy and broke trying to do everything listed. There are the typical vitamins and minerals, as well as a number of foods that have healthy properties. But then you start getting into what I would call esoteric things like rhodiola rosea, wild lettuce extract, grape extract, pectin, NADH, etc. I'm sure your local health food store will just LOVE you! And pretty much everything has to be organic, as that seems to be the only way to "guarantee" the food is healthy for you. But I couldn't help wondering... do you trust the "organic" label thrown on stuff these days? (I'm cynical.) And if the environment is already so polluted with mercury, lead, and other nasties, then aren't the "organic" foods sucking up those same things as part of their growth? Granted, probably less so than pesticide-laden crops, but I don't think we're talking black and white extremes here. It seems as if it's more a spectrum of grey...
There's much to be said for Cook's information and general approach. If you made the effort to eat and supplement as she directs, you would definitely live longer and probably eliminate some physical ailments you have. But I don't think I want to have my monthly paycheck direct deposited at the health food store, nor do I want to agonize over every last piece of fruit I pick up. The value I see here is to raise your awareness of how the brain is affected by food and chemical exposure, and give you the information you need to make potential changes as you see necessary. But like many radical dietary changes, I don't hold out much hope of long-term sustainability when the average person can't even stay on a basic diet and lose weight... myself included.

Homeopathy for Pregnancy, Birth, and Your Baby's First Year Review

Not only does this book give you very specific information on using homeopathic remedies, it focuses on emotional as well as physical symptoms (which is essential to homeopathy). The sections on labor and post-partum are some of the most informative I've read in my pregnancy. Detailed, honest, and non-judgmental, the book covers the myriad and often complicated emotions mothers may encounter during pregnancy and labor, and offers ways to deal with these issues naturally (often with simple practices like taking a bath). This book covers, in detail, several birth complications, and ways the mother can deal with these during labor. This is all done with very easy to read and matter of fact language. No foofy new-age stuff here. I wish every pregnant woman in the world could have the information contained in this book. If you are considering it, BUY IT NOW!
