This useful guide provides basic information on a wide range of nutritional supplements, incorporating cutting edge findings in the fields of nutrition and supplementation. This updated edition includes information on newer supplements and herbal remedies like MSM, IP6, colostrum, olive leaf extract and saw palmetto.
In Chapter One: Nutrition, Diet and Wellness, the author provides the basics of nutrition, from the 4 basic nutrients to the micronutrients plus guidelines for selecting and preparing foods. This section includes an interesting article on phytochemicals (biologically active substances in plants that give them their color and flavour).
The chapters that follow provides an overview of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and water, explaining their functions in the body and then providing a detailed discussion of the individual vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The chapter on water discusses various types like tap, artesian, bottled, sparkling, distilled and natural spring water.
The chapter on anti-oxidants looks at a wide spectrum of substances, from Alpha-Lipoic Acid to Zinc. The next chapter deals with enzymes, their role in the body and how they interact with foods. This includes a list of commercially available digestive enzymes.
Natural Food Supplements are discussed in detail, from Acidophilus to Yeast; this section includes entries on SAMe, Phosphatidylserine, MSM, Melatonin, Glucosamine, DHEA, CoQ10, Colloidal Silver, Creatine and Pregnenolone, providing the latest information.
The last chapter is devoted to herbs, including essential oils, extracts, teas, tinctures and wines. Here one can find information on anything from Acerola to Yucca, divided into the parts of the plant that is used, its phytochemical and nutrient content, its actions and uses and further comments on the plant.
The valuable and handy guide concludes with a thorough index. Another excellent guide to supplements is Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible. For a more thorough treatment of nutritional healing, I recommend James and Phyllis Balch's extensive work Prescription For Nutritional Healing.

For anyone interested in learning the basics of mineralogy, this is the place to start! Easy to read and understand. Great section on the Crystal Systems. Most mineral or mineralogy books spend most of the book on photographs, which is great, but this book focuses on giving the reader the basic understanding to know what they are looking at in the many fine "picture books" already out there about minerals.

Colloidal Minerals and Trace Elements: How to Restore the Body's Natural Vitality Review

Colloidal Minerals and Trace Elements: How to Restore the Body's Natural Vitality
Average Reviews:

I did a search on Amazon a few months ago looking for material on colloidal minerals. What I came across was this excellent book by Dr. Marie-France Muller. Translated from French, this resource has an enormous amount of detail, information, and credibility. I was impressed immediately when I saw a listing of colloidal minerals, their properties and benefits, and in many cases, applications for their use.
This book is unique in that it provides a great amount of information without being overwhelming. Additionally, Dr. Muller provides a clear background on how we got to where we are today--from our poor soil, to the poor nutrition many of us face without even realizing it.
Specifically, I was fascinated by the section on Himalayan sea salt, its properties and amazing health benefits. I truly believe this is a "must read" for anyone interested in a healthy lifestyle devoid of drugs and gimmicks.

How to effectively use colloidal mineral and trace element supplements to compensate for the deficiencies in our diet that cause ill health' Includes a complete list of all trace elements and their ideal combinations for addressing health imbalances' Examines why our food is no longer nutritious enough to supply the body's mineral and trace element needs and how to address this problemMuch of the ill health and lack of vitality people complain of today can be traced to a deficiency of minerals and trace elements in our diets. The food we eat is no longer keeping us healthy. Modern farming methods have depleted the natural mineral reserves of the soil, and as a result the foods we eat are increasingly deficient in the nutrients needed for proper functioning of the body.Minerals are essential catalysts that allow vitamins, enzymes, and other nutrients to perform their necessary roles in the body and promote proper mental function. Simply taking standard mineral supplements will not correct any imbalances we may experience because our bodies are designed to best absorb and use minerals that are in a colloidal form: the soluble suspended state in which plants absorb minerals from the soil. Colloidal mineral supplements, however, can increase vitality and strengthen the immune system because 98 percent of the supplement is incorporated into the body as opposed to the 3-5 percent absorption of standard mineral supplements. Colloidal Minerals and Trace Elements details 55 trace elements and their beneficial effects and explains the ideal combinations of colloid supplements to use based on your health concerns.

The Calcium Lie
by Robert Thompson, M.D. and Kathleen Barnes
InTruth Press, c. 2008, 142pp.
What? We've been fooled again? Nutritional theories evolve and change over time as science learns more about the human body and its processes. Dr. Robert Thompson offers cutting edge information refuting the commonly held position of the importance of calcium, and lots of it, in our diet. Through his clinical practice, he has determined that an overabundance of calcium creates what he calls "The Calcium Cascade," a domino-effect of inefficient nutritional depletion that results in multiple metabolic malfunctions, including obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, anxiety, migraines, depression and hypertension.
Bones are not only made of calcium. Calcium is ONE of 12 minerals plus traces of many other minerals that are needed to make strong bones. He believes that we have been mislead by doctors, nutritionists, health care professionals and big pharmaceutical companies in the belief that we need more and more calcium. The simple fact is we need more MINERALS to create optimal functioning of our bodies' processes.
As soon as I read Dr. Thompson's book, I began checking the patients in MY clinical practice for the state of calcium and other minerals in their bodies. So far, 100% of them are presenting with mineral depletion and calcium overload! I'm recommending they discontinue any calcium supplements they may be taking and start a regimen of daily mineral tablets to replace these essential minerals in their system. It takes time to replace the minerals, yet simply removing the extra calcium begins to make positive health changes that are quickly noticeable.
I strongly recommend this book to all health care professionals and consumers who care about nutrition and well-being. Inform yourself and get off the calcium bandwagon!

Rock and Gem Review

Rock and Gem
Average Reviews:

What a beautiful book! This coffee table book on rocks and minerals is absolutely stunning.
The book is divided into 4 sections:
1.Origins, focusing on the evolution of the Earth and the universe, and how and why minerals are formed.
2.Rocks, a species-by-species guide to the major sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks.
3.Minerals, a species-by-species guide to the key minerals (silicates, oxides, sulfates, etc.).
4.Fossils, showing fossils of the major taxonomic groups.
The strength of the book is sections 2 and 3. Almost every page has jaw-dropping photographs of high-quality museum specimens of rocks and minerals (principally from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History), interspersed with great stock photography. On a visual basis, this book leaves its competition in the dust. The accompanying text is interesting as well, particularly in its explanations of how various minerals (and their component elements) are used in modern society. The species-by-species descriptions are interrupted by sidebars on interesting topics (the Taj Mahal, the Hope Diamond, the Petrified Forest, etc.).
To make this book an ideal stand-alone volume on rocks and minerals, some of the space devoted to individual rock, mineral, and fossil descriptions should have been allocated instead to more general topics. Instead of 100 pages on individual silicate minerals, for example, the book could have used more detailed information on rock collecting, mineral properties, and mineral extraction (mining). Still, this comes closer to being an all-in-one guide to rocks and minerals for the layperson than any other book I have come across.
Be aware that you are buying a general information volume on rocks and minerals, not a rock collecting guide. The book's size and information content both work against using this book in the field. To make a comparison with astronomy, this book is more like a collection of photos from the Hubble Space Telescope than a star chart that will show you how to find the constellations.
With that caveat in mind, this book is a source of wonder that you will find yourself returning to time and time again. It will make you aware of how much natural beauty there is in our world, for those who take the time to look.

This book is arranged according to the mineral classifications, which is good if you know your minerals. The mineral testing section (flame tests, bead tests, etc.) is not found in very many field guides. As a professional Geologist, I would recommend this to other geologists, not to rock hounds. The National Audubon Society's field guide is better for rock hounds; there are more photos and they are arranged by color. The Audubon's minerals are still by classification, but the testing information is not included.
