This useful guide provides basic information on a wide range of nutritional supplements, incorporating cutting edge findings in the fields of nutrition and supplementation. This updated edition includes information on newer supplements and herbal remedies like MSM, IP6, colostrum, olive leaf extract and saw palmetto.
In Chapter One: Nutrition, Diet and Wellness, the author provides the basics of nutrition, from the 4 basic nutrients to the micronutrients plus guidelines for selecting and preparing foods. This section includes an interesting article on phytochemicals (biologically active substances in plants that give them their color and flavour).
The chapters that follow provides an overview of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and water, explaining their functions in the body and then providing a detailed discussion of the individual vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The chapter on water discusses various types like tap, artesian, bottled, sparkling, distilled and natural spring water.
The chapter on anti-oxidants looks at a wide spectrum of substances, from Alpha-Lipoic Acid to Zinc. The next chapter deals with enzymes, their role in the body and how they interact with foods. This includes a list of commercially available digestive enzymes.
Natural Food Supplements are discussed in detail, from Acidophilus to Yeast; this section includes entries on SAMe, Phosphatidylserine, MSM, Melatonin, Glucosamine, DHEA, CoQ10, Colloidal Silver, Creatine and Pregnenolone, providing the latest information.
The last chapter is devoted to herbs, including essential oils, extracts, teas, tinctures and wines. Here one can find information on anything from Acerola to Yucca, divided into the parts of the plant that is used, its phytochemical and nutrient content, its actions and uses and further comments on the plant.
The valuable and handy guide concludes with a thorough index. Another excellent guide to supplements is Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible. For a more thorough treatment of nutritional healing, I recommend James and Phyllis Balch's extensive work Prescription For Nutritional Healing.

The Wellness Project: A Rocket Scientist's Blueprint For Health

The author of this book goes to great lengths defining what the scientific process is and how terribly inadequate it has been in this country in the medical and nutritional fields, and the reasons that is so.
His book is packed with well compiled data, presented with supporting science when available, and he is also careful to label what is hypothesis and what has only some degree of research behind it. He gives his judgments about the status of the scientific backing and constantly points out areas of hypothesis for which scientific testing would be a welcome project, needing only funds to proceed. In some cases he has already started scientific testing through his own university grants.
His section on detoxing is worthy of being a whole other book by itself. He goes into great detail about the intricate and complex field of detoxification--more so than any other source I have ever seen. And he is generous with the details of his own personal health experiments--the failures and the successes.
He presents his ideas about what constitutes a healthy diet as hypothesis, based on nature and supported by his own experiences and those of others interested in experimenting with the ideas presented. I am eager to become an early contributor to this group with the experience of following his dietary and detox ideas.
One of his hypotheses is that many vegetables come with their own protective toxins from nature. It is fascinating to follow his logic of how it is that some vegetables are often toxic and fruits not so. The logic is there, he presents a good case, and it would be of great interest to see additional scientific research in this area. In my case I intend to make my own experiment of one to find out for myself what works, using the guidelines set forth in the book.
I am grateful to the author for having written this book as it seems to me to offer a great resource to anybody wanting to study and research health and wellness for themselves. I have bought several copies to give away.

The author, a NASA spacecraft designer, inventor, lawyer, entrepreneur, and holistic health practitioner, embarked on a twenty year research project to determine how the human body could remain healthy for the longest possible time. You do not need a background in science to understand The Wellness Project because it is based on common sense, backed by more than 350 references. The diet section of the book does not resemble any diet in print, and yet is backed by the largest "clinical study" in human history. Read about the one diet that works for all human beings and is nature's solution to an omnivore's dilemma.Find out why eating three kinds of "dirt" can be important to maintain your health, and how certain types of emotional detoxification can speed up the removal of physical toxins from our body. This book also includes sections on lifestyle and our environment, proving that staying healthy is not rocket science!

The Safe Shopper's Bible: A Consumer's Guide to Nontoxic Household Products, Cosmetics, and Food Review

The Safe Shopper's Bible: A Consumer's Guide to Nontoxic Household Products, Cosmetics, and Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you would like to reduce your personal toxic load, you probably will not find a better resource than the Safe Shopper's Bible by David Steinman (an excellent health writer) and Samuel Epstein (a well-known cancer researcher).
This book covers a large array of consumer products and foods with a specific focus on cancer-causing ingredients, with specific product types and brands listed for each category. It is based upon hard research from sources including manufacturers' Materials Safety Data Sheets, reports by the World Health Organization and Freedom of Information Act requests to the FDA, USDA, EPA and ATF (which perform their own testing that often never sees the light of day).
Deodorants, shampoos and conditioners, as well as fish, red meat, and various vegetables, are just some of the many products covered. All products are listed in easy-to-read charts by category, with an overall risk level for each, and more specific information if you need it.
In the seven pages the book devotes to deodorants, for example, we see that there are enormous differences in the carcinogenicity of the various products reviewed. They range from products like English Leather A Man's Deodorant Stick, with six ingredients placing users at risk for contact dermatitis (fragrance, parabens, propylene glycol), or cancer (D&C Red 33, FD&C Green 3, FD&C Yellow 6), to Desert Essence Tea Tree Deodorant, which has no such ingredients.
The main failing of the book is that it overlooks substances that are not known carcinogens, such as mercury. Hence, various seafood items are listed as safe which actually pose a mercury risk. A secondary failing is that it was written ten years ago, and the toxic burden of the planet, and hence of our food supply, has been shifting and increasing since then.
Both of these deficiencies can be remedied by a visit to the Environmental Working Group's Web site at http://ewg.org.
This page contains a nice summary of mercury levels in fish:

I have personally adhered to the recommendations of the Safe Shopper's Bible and its predecessor, Diet for a Poisoned Planet, since 1990. During that time, I went from a person who had sometimes extreme allergic reactions to cigarette smoke, new carpet odor, gasoline fumes, perfumes, and a variety of other common substances, resulting in recurring bouts of bronchitis, to a person who is presently in excellent health with virtually no reactions to anything. There is more to the story than that, because I also had mercury removed from my teeth during this interval, but I feel certain that paying close attention to the lists in these books was a major contributing factor to the dramatic improvement in my own health.

The Gerson Therapy: The Proven Nutritional Program for Cancer and Other Illnesses Review

The Gerson Therapy: The Proven Nutritional Program for Cancer and Other Illnesses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Highly Recommended First Book On The Use And Application Of Alternative Medicine/Natural Healing for Chronic Conditions.
This is the book that I would first recommend for anyone wanting to understand the use of alternative medicine for the healing of any chronic condition including cancer I would also highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating the use of conventional medicine as well because of the excellent material on the disease process and the potential for using this or some other alternative therapy in a complimentary or combination process of natural and conventional healing. The issue in addressing healing of chronic diseases is for the person with the disease and their family to be sufficiently unformed of the causes and all possible treatment possibilities so that they can make informed and responsible decisions about their total treatment. Other therapies and approaches could be evaluated as to how well they addressed all of the healing concepts detailed in this book.
"The Gerson Therapy" is a welcome and highly recommended addition to the multitude of books that address healing of chronic conditions including cancer by using natural or alternative means. The specific approach is healing by a combination of high quality nutrition and total body detoxification. The Therapy is a total program and does require significant life style changes at least for the detailed therapy. Actually, lifetime lifestyle changes will be required to remain healthy, but these are easily done once one has gone through the detailed therapy.
This book accomplishes several needed functions. The Gerson Therapy is brought up to date, (the therapy is over 60 years old), with the latest information including program modifications for people who have had chemotherapy, for people who are in an extremely weakened state, and a modified program for non cancer chronic conditions. The information is provided in a highly readable and understandable format. The book details the background, theory, and enough specific cases to establish credibility without being overbearing. In fact most of the case studies are used to detail understanding of the therapy. The book does not sugar coat the difficulty of healing using natural therapy and states that the Gerson Therapy may be the most difficult to follow of the many that are available. All of the information required to do the therapy either on one's own or in conjunction with a qualified clinic or practitioner is provided in easily accessible section. (There is some redundancy in some of the specific sections but this redundancy eliminates the need to search for needed information for people who are following the therapy). The number of recipes is expanded from previous books, and this is a welcome addition for anyone who has followed the therapy. The mental aspects of natural healing are now addressed and are given a separate section in the book. Finally, many tricks and techniques needed to make the therapy more workable are included. The bottom line is that the book is both informative and is useable as a day to day guide for anyone deciding to do the therapy.
I feel qualified to make these statements about this book because three years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and after much research and discussions with conventional and alternative practitioners, I chose to first start with the Gerson Therapy. The results have been wonderful with the cancer having gone in remission after about 18 months and numerous other problems have responded to the therapy as well. I have not had to revert to my back up plan of conventional medicine. Yes the therapy can be difficult to follow particularly because it is highly restrictive on food, requires time to make fresh vegetable juices several times every day, and requires time to do the detoxification procedures. And yes, the diet has different taste due to the salt and fat restrictions, but one quickly get use to the different tasee However, to be healed without permanent side effects is well worth the effort and the required life style changes. While I had excellent support materials available, this book is still a significant improvement to the available literature. I found nothing in this book that I had a problem with and with the improvements that have been made, the book deserves the five star rating
The process of natural healing is not easy, requires attention to detail, and continued study to avoid setbacks through the process. This new book on the Gerson Therapy will provide information that can assist the decision process and will provide up to date information on the therapy's application.
