Each chapter was full of worthwhile information. The chapters were easy to read because they were short and to the point. Thank you Marilyn because you have also added new locations to our travel list.

Snow falls each year before we leave Central Oregon for the winter. Usually a light dusting that doesnâ??t last. Itâ??s a lovely reminder of what we once enjoyed. However, I put my cross-country skis in a garage sale before I moved to Central Oregon in 1999, knowing my husband Harry Taylor and I would be spending our winters in Mexico. When I started searching for answers to why we are called snowbirds, I ran across the lyrics of Anne Murrayâ??s song, as well as an encyclopedia section on the Junco, or snowbird, relative of the finches. Slate-colored Juncos breed in northern evergreen forests of Canada and the United States, and are found as far south as the Gulf of Mexico. Canadians and Americans have been heading south for decades, if not centuries, to escape the cold sting of winter. You need only drive on Oregon Highway 97 from late September through December to see the migration of cars and RVs heading south. My how these â??houses on the roadâ?? have grown â?? many â??snowbirdsâ?? now are full timers. Snowbirds Unlimited: Tales from the Restless Traveler merely scratches the surface of a lifetime of travel at home and abroad, by air, land or sea, coupled with ten years of documenting portions of that travel in published columns and articles. Many interesting, exotic and wonderful destinations are missing from this book due to the space limitations. This is a pick up and put down book, much like my previous collection of published columns in Mother of Eight Survives Population Explosion: Just Between Us Column Selections. Although the days of family-travel slide shows in the living room have passed, we now have social networking to share our enthusiastic reports and photos online. And, if some of us are fortunate enough to do what I am doing, and readers are interested enough to buy the books â?? we still can share our adventures.

A Plague of Frogs : The Horrifying True Story Review

A Plague of Frogs : The Horrifying True Story

Mr. Souder has the rare ability to bring abstruse science to life without bias or over-simplification. He is also a keen observer of the human species and its political interactions.
This is indeed "the horrifying true story," one I wish would go away; yet the author's presentation is dispassionate, thorough, and as non-alarmist as possible for a subject this spooky.
The book offers a good overview of current environmental science research in addition to its difficult detective story: what's responsible for these massive levels of gross deformities in frogs?

Ecodesign: The Sourcebook Review

Ecodesign: The Sourcebook
Average Reviews:

this book is cool - lots of pictures, the text is brief. there is a good mix of concepts and production products ( concepts are always more fun to look at and have more pure ideas. production parts show how it all works in the real world). in fact, the best part of the book is that it finds positive things about a lot of products. it isn't demanding that we stop using plastic or batteries - just finds the best examples of products that use them wisely.
One important section is buried in the back. pages 327 - 330 give eco-design strategies. the are brief desicriptions of how to design an "eco" product. for example, one says "self-assembly: designs that are assembled by the consumer, therefore saving valuable space in transport and storage". most writers would take several pages to say the same thing.

What's In This Stuff: The Hidden Toxins in Everyday Products - and What You Can Do About Them

I found this book browsing in a small bookstore in Aptos, California. I was interested in finding out what is in some processed restaurant and other foods that I am finding myself sensitive to...well, my God, I had no idea what a toxic jungle of products are available for consumers to slowly poison themselves with. The book is very informative and straightforward. It is easy to locate the information you want and frankly I found it easier than searching the internet. The content is what it is and the author doesn't try to glamorize what is quite sobering information nor trivilize. A must read and act upon book!

The essential reference to what's really in the products we buy. Every day Americans eat processed food and use toiletries, cosmetics, household cleaners, gardening supplies and often pet care products of some kind. It's time to ask What's in This Stuff? The answers are shocking. This fascinating book reveals how many of the products used every day contain poorly tested chemicals that are implicated in health problems, and offers simple, nontoxic alternatives. It explains: - Why we are exposed to more chemicals than ever before - The health risks of exposure to industrial chemicals in consumer products - Which chemicals are most harmful - Why babies in the womb and young children are especially vulnerable to toxins - How to interpret confusing labels - Tips for using conventional products more wisely

Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do about It Review

Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do about It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many of you thinking about buying this are expecting somethng similar to the "Diet for a Small Planet", which is, in part, a cookbook for vegans and vegetarians. There are no recipes in this book.
What this is, is a very well done discussion of green farming, agribusiness, and what to do to eat greener. There are several chapters discussing the greenwashing of agribusiness, and how marketing makes us think that products are "green" which inherently are not. It's fascinating reading.
Specifically, there has been an enormous amount of discussion in the popular press in recent years about how agribusiness-grown foods are better for the planet because they're more efficiently grown--which isn't true; the numbers that have been manufactured to make agribusiness look good don't take into account the sheer volume of fossil fuels required to transport food.
There are also some interesting discussions about how to get sustainable beef: the author talks about carbon sinks in grassland; some ecologists have noted that large swaths of grassland hold even more carbon than forests. If we could just keep cows out of feedlots, then it would be a lot more o.k. to eat beef.
Then, the author goes off on a "green farming" tangent that is a little hard to stomach because her ideas about real farming aren't realistic; the author goes into a long discussion of green farming and rhapsodizes at great length about "growing what would grow there naturally."
No offense, but you know what grows in much of the breadbasket of the United States (California and Texas) without huge amounts of transported water? Nothing.
Despite some of the unrealistic ideas, there are some neat ideas in the chapters on green farming.
The author tells you what to actually eat near the end of the book. It's the usual, "Food, mostly plants." to quote Pollan, and preferably local.
This is very well thought-out, analytically sound, reference for anyone interested in farming or ranching in a sustainable way. It's much better logically than much of what gets published in the popular press.
Who would like this: ecologists, farmers, ranchers, owners of small family farms, people involved in urban planning, and anyone who wants a more in-depth discussion of green farming techniques.
Who wouldn't like this: PETA apologists, and vegan evangelists. She has some negative things to say about them.

Gorgeously Green: 8 Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly Life Review

Gorgeously Green: 8 Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried really hard to love this book. While I truly admire Sophie Uliano's enthusiasm and witty tone, there are few "buts" that were quite annoying. What's worse, these nasty "buts" made me question whether the advice given in the book is authentic, useful, and genuine.
1. Do yourself a favour and skip the beauty section of the book. Ms Uliano had to spend more time researching before writing a segment on green beauty. Many of "organic" and "green" products she recommends are loaded with potentially toxic substances such as synthetic preservatives and fragrances. Consistency is key. Poorly researched tips in one section undermine author's credibility in other areas, and in general undermine reader's trust in the whole green living thing.
2. While the book is very informative and packed with easy tips, most chapters look like a link exchange section of a website. Too many links to websites - and some aren't that relevant. What's more irritating, the author blatantly promotes her own website on every page. It may be fun once or twice, but not in every chapter.Sometimes it feels like the author didn't really care about adding more information to the book - why bother if you can easily upload all the articles online?
Speaking of online: most of the tips can be easily found online FOR FREE.
3. Too many typos. It's "Herbatint", not "Hebatint", mind you. And this hair dye is so chemically loaded, you shouldn't really mention it in a green living guide. When I found ten typos, I stopped counting, and I wasn't even in the middle of the book. I know, it's not the author's fault, it's the publisher's lack of effort, but still. Such things don't support the idea of importance of green living.
In general, the book is an easy uplifting read that may convert few babyboomers into "green girls".

Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home Review

Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home

I read this book and liked quite a bit, but felt it wasn't really geared towards the every day person. I have a decent income, yet it overwhelmed me on it's push to buy, buy, buy to keep my family safe. It wasn't until I was almost finished that I realized his Hollywood connection, but it had seemed incredulous up to that point how he'd attracted so many celebrities as just a non-profit green guy.
All that namedropping made it harder to see the book as aimed at everyday people (I wanted to see regular people talking about their changes and making it work, not people with millions to work with). Several of the shops mentioned in the resources section for places to buy from "just happened" to be owned by celebrities. A lot of the items mentioned as critical were really advertorial for specific brands and of course very expensive. There were a few homemade recipes & ideas, but just as many pushes for things that are a financial stretch for many people. A lot of cheap greener living items were barely touched on. Cloth diapers were a tiny paragraph and not given much kudos yet that is a huge item that is feasible for any income level. Only 1 of the 4 diaper brands listed in the resources was cloth.
The intention was there, but IMO there are other books by regular people that are more inspiring, more realistic in what you're able to do time-wise and financially and still be as green and safe as you can.

Living Green: The Missing Manual Review

Living Green: The Missing Manual
Average Reviews:

This book can be preachy and a bit breathless in some of its content, but it's really a fascinating and educational read.
Conner works hard to cover a lot of topics and gives you material on everything from the chemicals you may not know about in your home to alternate and renewable energy sources. Along the way she also covers raising a green family (I raised two kids via cloth diapers and was happy to see them covered), building/remodeling, eating green, responsible shopping, and a number of other topics.
A number of topics were thrown out without enough evidence of whether or not there's really a basis for concern (the impact of volatile organic compounds offgassing from foam in furniture or dryboard markers, for example), but generally Connor does a very nice job of giving you a good background on the topics she's writing about. There are also a lot of resources referenced in the book so you're able to go look at more material from one side of the story, at least.
While there's a chapter dedicated to "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," Brown seems to carry that theme through the book. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I found it very helpful to consistently find small reminders of those principles in many of the book's topics. I'm a proponent of reducing the number of things around me and trying to reuse as much as possible - but I'm nowhere near as good at it as I'd like to be.
Overall I enjoyed the book and found it very useful.

I would have wanted to know when was the issue date of this book before purchasing it. Unfortunately, most of the references and figures are from the year 1995. Even if the green profiles segmentation is still interesting, as the book has been written before 2000 and the internet revolution, it doesn't give the up-to date vision of the " green marketing" approach I was expecting.

Science or Pseudoscience: Magnetic Healing, Psychic Phenomena, and Other Heterodoxies Review

Science or Pseudoscience: Magnetic Healing, Psychic Phenomena, and Other Heterodoxies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To really grasp what is going on with Big Science and why there is such resistance to new ideas, you need a copy of Dr. Henry Bauer's Science or Pseudoscience: Magnetic Healing, Psychic Phenomena and Other Heterodoxies published this year by the University of Illinois Press. Henry H. Bauer, Dean Emeritus of Arts & Sciences, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Science Studies Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Scientific Exploration, and the author of several other books like The Enigma of Loch Ness: Making Sense of a Mystery and Scientific Literacy and the Myth of the Scientific Method, which we recommend almost monthly to our listener and guests on ....
The most original aspect of this book is the way that Dr. Bauer has of defining normal, revolutionary, premature, and "pseudo" science in terms of the three facets of data, method, and theory. He makes detailed comparisons of the actual working practices in natural science, social science, and denigrated science and reexamines notorious cases from this fresh perspective. Normal science doesn't try to do anything revolutionary in any of these three facets, according to Bauer. As he says, "Scientific "revolutions" (quantum mechanics, relativity) change only one of those at a time. Looking for novelty in two of the three simultaneously produces "premature" science: Mendel's theory of genetics, Wegener's theory of drifting continents - ignored or rejected by science for decades. Novelty in all three areas characterizes looking for Loch Ness Monsters or UFOs or studying psychic phenomena; the difficulties are enormous and the chances of success slight, but that doesn't make the quest useless or to be criticized."
Some of our favorite subjects that have been dismissed as "pseudo science" are reexamined as "scientific" with this perspective, and Bauer relates the search for the giant squid, the search for extraterrestrials, pre-Clovis people in the Americas, cold fusion, the idea that HIV causes AIDS, and much more.
Bauer is a humorous writer and acknowledges that his critics will probably not be able to keep from being nasty. He recommends that if the skeptics insist on being nasty, they should at least distinguish genuine knowledge-seekers from self-promoting confidence tricksters. As he points out, many cryptozoologists, parapsychologists, and ufologists are perfectly honest, genuine seekers of understanding (while some mainstream researchers are not very honest).
For an unusually unbiased, yet scientific, approach to some of the subjects that are "borderland" respectable - sometimes called pseudo-science, sometimes admitted into science, but generally still controversial ("how much don't we yet know about electromagnetism and living processes! About archaeoastronomy!") you must read this book.

This is a book that all scientists should read, and a book that all who are interested in the unexplainable will want to read. Bauer explores how examining anomalies have profited humankind and restores the respectability - and necessity - of such pursuits in a fascinating overview of science and the pursuit of the unknown. Although science attempts to draw a clear line separating its endeavours from those of "pseudoscience", Henry Bauer reveals that the distinction is both equivocal and misleading. Setting aside science's snowy mantle of truth, Bauer presents pseudoscience - or anomalistics - not as the opposite of science but as something that develops parallel to it. Science assumes anomalies - that is, phenomena that contradict the existing store of knowledge - result from error, contamination, or even deception: in short, from bad research technique, at best, and deliberate hoax, at worst. Anomalists, by contrast, accept such occurrences, often on the basis of eyewitness claims, as important in themselves and worthy of further study, even if they contradict prevailing theories and offer a minimal degree of reproducibility."Science or Pseudoscience" explores the diffuse and porous borders between mainstream and unorthodoxy. A scientist himself, Bauer points out that some phenomena that have turned out to be spurious, such as polywater and cold fusion, were for a time taken quite seriously by respected members of the scientific community. Other anomalies, such as ball lightning and meteorites, were dismissed by many scientists but turned out to be legitimate discoveries. Meanwhile, science has failed to prove that phenomena encompassed by the "big three" subjects in anomalistics - parapsychology, ufology, and cryptozoology (e.g., the Loch Ness monster) - do not exist. Rather, science theorizes that these phenomena cannot exist, since today's scientific laws seem to hold them to be impossible. Bauer discusses anomalies such as archaeoastronomy (e.g., Stonehenge) and bioelectromagnetics and looks at how institutional, commercial, and political interests influence borderline research in mainstream laboratories. He also draws a distinction between fraud and commercial huckstering, on the one hand, and genuine knowledge-seeking about matters ignored by the established intellectual disciplines, on the other. Bauer notes that the more closely anomalistic research approaches science, the more strenuously it is criticized by the establishment, often in terms of heresy. Reminding us that geniuses are cranks who happen to be right while cranks may be geniuses who happen to be wrong, "Science or Pseudoscience" offers a measured and thoughtful assessment of this volatile debate.

Ready, Set, Green: Eight Weeks to Modern Eco-Living
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ready, Set, Green: Eight weeks to Modern Eco-Living by two experts at Treehugger.com, Graham Hill and Meaghan O'Neill is an easy to read--and digest--primer on green living.
Citing the industrial revolution at the turn of the 20th century as the beginning of the heavy use of non-renewable resources and pollution, the authors are equally optimistic that when the masses turn green, we will have a new, eco-friendly revolution.
Unlike some green books that have been published lately, Meaghan and O'Neill really care about the environment. They get that we need a "critical mass" to institute real change for the environment.
The authors deliver sensible and easy to implement ways to become eco-friendly. Drive less, switch bulbs from incandescent to CFL's--stuff anyone can do.
I recommend Go Green, Live Rich: 50 Simple Ways to Save the Earth and Get Rich Trying to supplement Red, Set, Green and to psyche you on how going green save money. I also recommend Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet for even more easy, eco-friendly and stylish ideas for your home.

This is a great book for anyone interested in designing sustainable buildings. There are 7 sections - envelope, lighting, heating, cooling, energy production, water and waste and case studies- with different strategies in each. The sections are very clear and explain what each strategy is, how it's achieved, the problems and design considerations for each. Also there are lots of diagrams, charts and real-world examples. I would highly recommend this book it is very easy to read and it makes what may seem like complicated sustainable systems, easy to implement into your own designs.

Diet for a Poisoned Planet: How to Choose Safe Foods for You and Your Family - The Twenty-first Century Edition Review

Diet for a Poisoned Planet: How to Choose Safe Foods for You and Your Family - The Twenty-first Century Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book in the early 1990's and it changed my life. It was the most informative book I have ever read (and I read them all!) on the subject of a healthy diet and what goes into (and onto) the food we eat. I carried this book around as my food "bible" for years and years and was thankful every day that Mr. Steinman did thousands of hours of research to help make my life healthier and happier by testing the foods we all eat for toxic residues and other toxic substances and publishing the results. This book is for EVERYONE. Every person on this planet should read this book and use it to help them make their food choices.
A few years back I was wondering if some of the material in the book wasn't outdated, especially with the boom in organic food available now (thank goodness) and wished Mr. Steinman would update the book. My copy is old and tatered but I still refered to it all the time. Low and behold, it's here! An updated version! Long awaited, I pre-ordered it on Amazon and it arrived yesterday and I've already read most of it. It is just as great as the old version and I feel better that the information is now more current, espeically since I have two small children to feed, and the current information is invaluable. PLEASE, read this book. Do it for yourself, your health, your kids, YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. The information is will change your life for the better.
I grew up in Pacific Palisades, near the Santa Monica Bay where Mr. Steinman's story begins, so I truly understand his reason for writing this book (I remember the signs posted on the Santa Monica Pier too warning not to eat the fish caught! AWFUL!) and wanting and NEEDING to know the truth about what goes into our precious food. If people trust our government to keep our food healthy you are fools. Take matters into your own hands. Buy this book.
By the way, I just read some disturbing reviews that insinuated that this book has something to do with Scientology. I've read this book cover to cover for over a decade and can't figure out how some people come up with these sort of strange ideas. Very worrying....
Thank you Mr. Steinman for taking care of me and my family! Truly!

Like Silent Spring, Diet for a Poisoned Planet took on an entire industry and went onto become a classic work of environmental writing. Now reissued in a new millennium edition, the work's in-depth look at the contaminants in individual food items is updated with the latest Total Diet Study findings. A motivating book, Diet for a Poisoned Planet changes people viscerally. Steinman tells his own story of fishing in the Santa Monica Bay as a child and how he went on to testify before Congress as an expert witness on the contamination of his own body by the fish he ate. The book is written by a true expert who has been a member of a National Academy of Sciences committee to advise Congress on seafood safety legislation.

This book gave a very broad overview of chemicals in our homes and bodies. It was an easy to read book that is definitely a great start at understanding the toxic chemical burden each of us faces by using common products. Boyd discusses indoor air, food, water, household products, and the greater scope of the world's affect of the heavy use of toxic chemicals. After doing a lot of research on the subject, there is nothing new I didn't already know from internet reasearch done by The Environmental Working Group or other such organizations. A book supplement choice would be "Slow Death by Rubber Duck" by Bruce Lourie. That book gave much better detailed explainations for things than this book. Overall it was a good read, just not as informative as I would have hoped.
