Bonsai (A Care Manual) Review

Bonsai (A Care Manual)
Average Reviews:

This is a very visually-appealing book with creative photography and excellent color pictures on almost every page. It is targeted to the beginner, and (though a beginner myself) I think it is quite informative and gets one off to a good start. It has an index of many common trees used for bonsai and rates them according to difficulty, hardiness and sun/shade preference. It's weakness is an abundance of technical printing errors (goofed up captions, mostly), but in spite of this I heartily recommend it to the beginner for use as "A [Basic] Care Manual" and say it's well worth its price.

Homegrown Vegetables, Fruits & Herbs: A Bountiful, Healthful Garden for Lean Times Review

Homegrown Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs: A Bountiful, Healthful Garden for Lean Times

This book is like having Jim walk through your garden with you, teaching you every step of the way.
Does everyone remember Jim Wilson from the Victory Garden South at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia? Sure we do! I loved watching the PBS series, The Victory Garden, every Saturday back in the 1980's (and before) and especially liked when they segued from Boston down to Georgia to see what Jim was growing.
He was always growing something exciting, or at least it seemed exciting the way he talked about it. I loved how he walked around the gardens sampling all kinds of vegetables and raving about how good they were. I still remember him picking an ear of sweet corn, maybe in his garden or maybe in one of the many gardens he visited, cutting off a few kernels with his pocket knife and eating them right there. He probably said something like, "My goodness that is sweet. No butter needed for this corn. That is one sweet ear of corn". It looked and sounded so good that I wanted to grow corn like that!
Now with this book, it's like Jim, and Walter, are walking us through the garden telling us once again how to grow our own produce. In an easy to read style, through words and pictures, they provide all the information you need to be successful growing your own vegetables, fruits, and herbs. As Jim noted at the beginning, he wants people to have success their first year growing vegetables, to avoid "the disappointment and downright failure that often comes with the first attempts at cultivating produce". Jim knows, we all know, that if that first garden is a flop, many people will give up and never try again. So he and Walter came out of what he refers to as "blissful retirement" to write this book at a time when he felt we needed good, practical information about growing our own vegetables and fruits.

Through this book, Jim Wilson, is teaching us in his own style how to be successful growing a vegetable garden. And Walter Chandoha is tempting us through his photographs to grow vegetables we swear we don't even like, but decide we'll grow them anyway, just because they look so good in those pictures.
This is the book I'm going to recommend to anyone who tells me they want to finally grow their own vegetables and asks me how to get started. This is the book I'm going to pull off the shelf when I have a question about something I want to grow in my own vegetable garden. This is the book I'm going to read and enjoy whenever I feel a need for some gardening advice for myself.
Thank you, Jim Wilson and Walter Chandoha, for coming out of retirement to collaborate on this wonderful book, Homegrown Vegetables, Fruits, and Herbs.

I checked all my local bookstores for the right book to give to a friend who is always asking me for "horticultural advice" on his collection of houseplants. I grew up in a family of wholesale flower growers, and have 30 years of experience with my own houseplants. This book is the best I've seen. It has a very complete (about 125 pages) section on cultivation, light, water, placement in the house, patio, or balcony, containers, re-potting, nutrients, overwintering. It's wonderful for neophyte houseplant enthusiasts, and has much to teach me as well. I especially liked the extensive pests & problems section, which had actually recognizable pictures of plant symptoms, and charts of how to solve the problem. A unique addition are very useful non-chemical alternatives, including herbal concoctions, to getting rid of pests & diseases, (essential for pet lovers like me who love their animals as much as their plants). After all of this, there are the photographs! Not just the usual plants for beginners, but also a separate section of 150 "Specialties & Rarities". Each picture has info on flowering time, placement, care, propagation, pests, & uses. Throughout the book are prominently placed concise "TIPS" for quick & easy reading both in the general info section and amongst all the photos. Now that I've got one for my friend, I need a copy for myself. An incredible book for the price!

Slice of Organic Life Review

Slice of Organic Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not only is this book a completely shallow coffee table book, it gives actively bad advice. For example, taking a cruise is in no way an environmentally-friendly alternative to flying (pg. 74). Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if a few people get botulism or other kinds of food poisoning after following her lackadaisical advice about canning - jar sterilization gets half a sentence in a sidebar. The author cheerfully offers 2-4 page guides on buying chickens, bees, ducks, geese, and goats when any livestock purchase requires significantly more research - not a fact she mentions; it all sounds very easy and pleasant.
I guess it's pretty, though. Just make sure you actually get some proper instruction on things that are a bit more serious than "buying natural fabrics".

A garden can be grown indoors and outdoors whether you choose to grow a flower garden, a garden for fruit trees, herbs and vegetables, for ornamental non-flowering plants or mix patches of each kind. Wherever your garden location may be, you will always want to start with planning to get your garden in order. You're going to need to work out what you want to grow, when and for how long it needs to be grown, where to plant and how to plant so that you get the best growth. Planning for outdoor gardening involves choosing the right tools, choosing your location, supplying the area with water, soil mixture, sunlight exposure and the use of compost or chemical fertilizers. Always start small and then you can grow it big. Begin with the easiest plants to grow and make sure to do all the critical steps so that you get a full harvest.Planning for indoor gardening involves much of the same basic issues like lighting, watering, fertilizing, soil and temperature control. However, special attention is needed with lighting concerns because unlike outdoor gardens, indoor gardens do not gather much sunlight. Particular thought will need to be given on artificial lighting, the kinds of plants that can grow in little or moderate light, and the indoor drainage system. Garden work can be backbreaking. But, if you have the natural ability to make plants grow well, it will truly show in the end when your garden is in full bloom, thriving and flourishing in all its glory--all set to be shown off!

Kids, Herbs & Health: A Practical Guide to Natural Remedies Review

Kids, Herbs and Health: A Practical Guide to Natural Remedies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am writing to highly recommend this book, Kids, Herbs, and Health, to parents and health practitioners alike. It is absolutely unique- the first of its kind to address herbal remedies for children in a complete and scientifically sound manner. My perspective is unique because I am a scientist (I hold a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry), a new Mom, and because I am intensely interested in herbs.
Mavor and White have done an outstanding job of explaining complex health/biochemical issues so that parents can make informed healthcare choices for their children. These topics include, but are not limited to, the pros and cons of antiobiotic use, the advantages and disadvantages of over-the-counter cold medicines, the safety of using herbs for kids, etc. I am impressed by the comprehensive nature of the book. Topics range from herbal treatments for common ailments such as colds, ear infections, sore throats, and colic, to treatments for less frequent problems such as attention deficit disorder, sleep and psychological problems. The herbal remedies the authors' suggest are supported by results from numerous clinical studies. Among herbal medicine guides, the science in this book is outstanding.
As a new Mom, I have found this book incredibly practical and useful. In every chapter there are recommendations for appropriate herbal remedies, as well as symptoms that indicate the child should see a doctor, and a wealth of other helpful information (for example, elevating the head of your child's bed during ear infections). The authors include the soundest advice on nutrition I've seen in books of this nature. I love the recipe for the "immune-building" soup! For the people who would like to be self-sufficient and save money, there are many recipes and instructions for home preparation of the herbal glycerites recommended for various medical conditions (i.e. the "runny-nose glycerite"). I have begun to make many of these glycerites during my son's well-times, so that they'll be ready when the need arises.
The book is easy to read, and, surprisingly for a book packed with so much information, I can sit and read it much like a novel. I appreciate the authors preparing this book. I'm certain it's going to positively impact the health of my child

Learn to Garden Review

Learn to Garden

If you are new to gardening or love reading about how to make leaf mold or want to learn how to recycle carrot peels and eggshells, then this is your book. I loved the quick introduction to topics like photosynthesis, pollination and other topics of interest that reminded me of my favorite Biology class in high school.
Learn To Garden will also teach you how to:
Make a Compost Pile
Figure out where to place plants according to sun/shade
Organize a Pet Friendly Yard
Plant bulbs at the proper depth
Transplant without harming plants
Prune Roses
Analyze Soil
Take Care of a Lawn
Plant Trees, shrubs and Climbers
Organize plants in containers, beds and borders
My favorite part of the book was actually how to make leaf mold. It is fascinating to think that you can make nourishing items by letting things decay. I will never look at raking leaves in the same way again. My father was an excellent gardener when we lived in Africa and I observed the way he made compost piles and nourished the dry sandy soil. Soon, we had lovely vegetables and were happily enjoying fried squash blossoms and other such gourmet luxuries.
When I was a child, the garden was were I was the happiest, getting lost amongst the corn, shelling peas on the back steps and digging up carrots to see if they were ready to eat. If you are trying to recreate some childhood memories or even just create a beautiful space to eat breakfast, this book has many ideas. This book gave me a lot of ideas, but now I'm going to have to think about moving because there is an "secret garden" idea in this book on page 77 that will need more than a deck!
What I miss most about my childhood home, is the scent of the soil and the fresh peaches we used to pick to make ice cream. The authors also discuss fruit trees, growing strawberries and those types of delicious topics.
If you have cats and have wanted to grow an herb garden, a two-tiered plant stand works very well. I'm finally growing herbs high enough off the ground so the cats don't nibble on them. Planting catnip in the lower tier is the next idea...

From Container to Kitchen: Growing Fruits and Vegetables in Pots

I was hoping for some tips and tricks to growing Fruits and Veggies in containers. At first when i read the first couple of pages before purchasing it seemed like the author was witty and experienced. Then after purchasing the book and reading the first 2 chapters I knew I made a mistake. The author started going into the spiritual and medical properties of plants for multiple chapters. Tell me how to make my plants produce more and you have won my heart. Tell me how patients who looked at pictures of plants got better faster and I think you are collecting royalties you don't deserve. He spent an entire chapter on how to buy and decorate pots. He left out a few technical details such as any measurement to define the small medium or large pots that he recommended for a few of the plants. He spent a chapter on proper soil preparation and nutrients, but never gave a recommendation or any actual amounts for different plants. He rambled on and on about where in your home potted plants could be placed and how they not only brighten up the home but have health benefits. Every time I thought I was going to get advise he backs out or changes the subject. I think all the tips and tricks put together if condensed could have been less than a single chapter and most could be found on the back of the seed packet. Most of the book was filler that had nothing to do with how to grow the plants. Do I really want to hear what he does when he gets up in the morning? Do I care where he lives and why? Should I be interested in how his home and pots are decorated or where the pots were found or how they were made? If you want to know more about the health benefits of container gardening this is the book for you. If you want to actually try container gardening don't choose this book. I wonder about most of the other reviews. Some look professional and almost make me want to read the book again to see if I missed all these helpful tips he gave. It also make me wonder if some of the reviewers were paid.

Finally, a book small enough to carry out to the garden with me for reference yet compact with enough information to enable me to find answers to my basic questions regarding best locations, season, size, appearance, care, possible difficulties, etc. I found the illustrated key next to each written description and picture of each plant to be extremely helpful and time saving for quick reference as to whether or not I want a plant based on its's being suitable for the location I want and the purpose intended for the blooms. All I have to do is flip open the book to the desired page, glance at the illustrated key symbols, slide my eyes over to the colored photograph of the actual plant and I know in less than 10 seconds if the plant may be suitable for my needs. I can then read the clarifying information and firm up my choice. The photography is very clear and the write-ups simple enough for a beginning gardener, such as myself, to understand.

Solar Home, The (How-To Guides) Review

Solar Home, The (How-To Guides)
Average Reviews:

As a compliment to other books on the subject this one would suffice to add some detail, but I certainly am glad it's not the only book on solar home building I own. The material seems to be presented from a limited, but technical, scope of understanding. Although some technical and accurate information has found it's way into the pages of this book, I have found it on all levels to be missing what ever mysterious combination of qualities makes a good user friendly how to book. From my reading of other books on the subject what fresh material and/or thought this book brings to the subject seems to be either contrary or obsolete. The methodology in this book seems particularly biased to a very limited way of covering the concerns of anyone interested in passive solar homes. Again this book could potentially supplement a reasonible collection, but I'm glad it's not my only book on the subject, and I'm certainly glad that it wasn't my first book on the subject! I'm not saying that this book is all wrong, but I find it to be far from alright! If you haven't bought a book on this subject yet, keep looking...I reccomend THE PASSIVE SOLAR HOUSE by James Kachadorian instead, it is more complete and more in touch!
