Aqua-Pure AP200 Under-Sink Water Filter System Review

Aqua-Pure AP200 Under-Sink Water Filter System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to give the Aqua-Pure a try before spending a fortune on a reverse osmosis system that would also take up all the space under the sink. To my relief, and a bit of a surprise, it actually works. I can compare the unfiltered to the filtered and there is a huge difference. And, it takes up little space.
Water companies have different issues to deal with in various areas of the country. Not far from here, my mother had a terrible iron problem, and I have none to deal with. I would imagine that a simple system like the AP200 might work in some areas and not others. If the water is really terrible, then perhaps only a more complex system would work and maybe not even then.
So, it works perfectly for me, but I do have issues. First, it is really expensive for what it is! This is a simple plastic device, two pieces and a gasket. $92 is a lot for that.
The filter screws into the housing. Since it is plastic, I have always been careful, but once I did find that the filter had broken off at the threads. This required taking everything out and doing something clever to remove the broken-off part from the housing.
Did I screw it in too tightly? Hmmm, I'm pretty careful about such things. I would hate to think it broke from normal water pressure or some sort of surge. I have no water hammer problem. In any case, it isn't very durable and takes too much care to install the filter cartridge.
The better news is that the filters come two in a box. Amazon's description makes it seem like you are only getting one for almost $50. Since they last me at least a year, that is only $25/year, which isn't too bad.
As with any filter, you do have to tap into the plumbing under the sink. That gets you into the world of plumbing and those who have been there know that there is little standardization and lots of options.
Again, as with any filter, you really have to use a separate faucet. Running all your cold water through this filter would shorten its life considerably and at only 2 GPM, the flow would be really slow.
I put my system in when I changed the sink and I bought one that had a hole in it for a separate faucet. Some homes have the faucets coming through the counter, but drilling would still be necessary.
In my area, and my circumstances, the Aqua-Pure turns out to be a fine option. We don't buy bottled water, the coffee and ice cubes are better and we use it to cook in. The regular water goes to the dishwasher and for sink duty.
So, I think it works just fine in most situations, takes up little room and is easier to install that some other systems. It is too expensive and fragile to get the coveted five stars, so it gets three.

This was without a doubt, one of the worsy purchases that I have EVER made! Arrived defective and the manufacturer, Rheem, could not have cared less. They refused to replace the bad unit and kept sending plumbers out to touble shoot and fix. After the third plumber, I packed it up and sent it back to Amazon.Amazon was great! they took care of my out of pocket expenses and made me "whole". I will NEVER buy another Rheem product.

We are comtemplating a whole house water filter, but have not made that decision yet. Finding out that our skin was drying out because of the water in the shower, this was a great option to try out a filter without spending a fortune.
And for those who may not have the option of installing a whole building filter, this works well.
Well priced, easy to install, and it seems to work.

Sprite Industries HR5-WH Shower Handle AntiScaling Spray Nozzle Review

Sprite Industries HR5-WH Shower Handle AntiScaling Spray Nozzle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this shower head in 2008 because reviewers said it was great for hard water areas. At the time we lived in the high desert in southern california and the water actually made our skin peel and break out. This shower head and timely replacement of the filters worked out great for us. It lasted exactly two years (at the time we paid $43 for it) before the adjustment ring broke. I turned it on recently and water was spraying out all around the ring. Sprite responded to my email quickly and offered for me to send it in for repair.
This shower head has excellent water pressure and the three settings are just what you need without the useless "rain shower" type settings or massage settings so hard that no one ever uses them.

Shower Water Filter KDF Review

I'm VERY chlorine sensitive & this filter worked well for 7 months before I had to replace it. I usually took a 10-15 min. shower daily with it. I could no longer smell chlorine in the water and felt much better (no more nausea or extreme feeling of tirednes). Knew I had to replace it when I could smell chlorine faintly again and symptoms began to reapear. Will buy a filter with replaceable cartridges next time to save money.Well worth buying this type of filter anyway, even if you don't have chlorine sensitivity because it makes your skin and hair noticeably softer and not so dry.

I installed this in my daughters home approx. 2 months ago. Initially it looked like it wasn't working as well as I expected. The dishes were coming out cloudy and with a film on them. I learned that if you use a rinse agent (little basket) along with the regular detergent, the dishes will come out fine. As of now we are pleased with the results and I'm thinking I will install one in my own home if my salt water softner quits working.

Bath Ball Water Faucet Filter - BB-104 Review

Bath Ball Water Faucet Filter - BB-104
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our water has some pretty intense chlorine--the filtration plant says it's 1ppm, which I suppose is average for city water supplies but it doesn't make for a pleasant drinking/showering/bathing experience. We've run whole house carbon filters for years but they wear out really quickly and we don't always get around to replacing them on time. I bought the bath ball for an 80 gallon bathtub that's used on a daily basis in the winter--it's sort of a stand-in for a hot tub and our family is super addicted to it! I really needed something to reduce the chlorine for our baths, but there are few options. The only problem with this product, aside from high cost, is that a lot of people complain it doesn't hang from their faucet without major jury-rigging. My faucet actually looks a lot like the one pictured, it slopes downward with a flange or flare at the bottom, so I figured it would work. I was right! I have to slow down the water flow a little when I'm filling the tub so that the water doesn't spill over the sides of the filter, but it's well worth it. It works like a charm to neutralize the chlorine. The manufacturer states that the filter will last for 26,000 gallons, but that depends on how much chlorine is actually in your water. Even if it turns out that I have to replace the filter several times a year, it's worth it to me for better water quality and healthier baths! Another bonus is that every component of the filter is recyclable.

I was disappointed when my local home improvement store stopped carrying my replacement filter for my Moen faucet. I searched online and found they changed the filter product number and found it at Amazon.com for the same price I always paid at the store. Another reviewer said it didn't work with his faucet, which is the same kind I have, but I took the chance and ordered it anyway. It works perfectly! This device appears to be exactly what I needed to provide an early warning in the event my in-house water heater begins leaking. I tested the unit and it seems to be quite sensitive to the presence of event small amounts of moisture. The sound level is more than adequate. Installation couldn't be simpler. Just insert a 9-volt alkaline battery and place the unit on the floor adjacent to the water heater. The four pins that extend from the bottom of the case are made of stainless steel. The battery should be replaced annually.

Brita 42633 Faucet Filtration System, Black/Chrome Review

Brita 42633 Faucet Filtration System, Black/Chrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I may be reiterating what many of the reviewers before me have said, but I may have a few helpful points to add.
First, they should have never used plastic adapters. Kitchen faucets with internal threads are quite common and the likelihood is high that you will have to use one of the included adapters to attach the filter to that kind of faucet. The plastic threading simply can't withstand the water pressure that will inevitably push on it when you turn the water on all the way.
It would have been very easy for them to use quality steel parts, and I'm sure most people would have been happy to even pay $5-10 more for something that will actually last. It is especially surprising that they would cut corners on a product where the real profit comes from the replacement filters rather than the original purchase. Who knows what they were thinking (or if they were thinking at all), but this product simply doesn't work when setup correctly.
The use of plastic is not where the problems end, however, because there is literally less than a half an inch of exposed threading within the top portion of the adapter. The adapters themselves also have around a quarter inch of threading. This is really a shame, because even using a weak material like plastic might be sufficient if they had enough threads engaging to strengthen the connection.
That said, if you are set on using this product (or forced to), here are a couple of things you can do to help alleviate the problem. I've gotten mine to work long enough for me to order something from one of their competitors.
- Turn the water pressure down on your faucet. In case you don't know how, there are usually two levers (one hot, one cold) underneath your sink that control the water supply. Try tightening them until the water flow is slow enough that it won't blow the filter off.
- Try epoxy or a similar plastic bonding agent. I used epoxy to bond the adapter to the filter mount. You can then screw it on by holding the rotating ring in place. This is an irreversible and permanent solution, but it will make it so that there is only one point that will leak.
- Another poster suggested you can contact Brita to get a metal replacement adapter. That may be a good solution. However, keep in mind that you will still have to screw the metal adapter into a short length of plastic threading. That may simply shift the weakest point to a different part of the mount.

HM Digital Handheld TDS Tester Model TDS-3 Review

HM Digital Handheld TDS Tester Model TDS-3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is on both the meter and the calibration fluid designed to calibrate the meter.
I bought the TDS-3 from Amazon as a check on the efficacy of my Brita filters. Shortly after I bought it I misplaced it (don't ask, it's a lesson in applied stupidity) so I bought another. You guessed it; I found the first one immediately after the second one arrived.
Having the two meters did provide one benefit though, I could compare the two. I was quite disappointed to note that there was a significant difference between readings for the two meters.
However...
If you have this meter, be sure to go to the web site for the manufacturer (Google TDS-3). They have an excellent discussion on how to use the meter to take measurements, what the meter's limitations are, i.e., what it measures, and how to calibrate it.
Using their instructions, i.e., taking measurements correctly, the two meters were much closer in their measurements. There was from 2 to 3% difference in the numerical readings for tap water, Brita-filtered water and distilled water. Both read zero for distilled water. Not too bad for home use. It's really important to do it right, though.
Since there was a difference between the two meters, however small, I decided to calibrate them using TDS's own calibration fluid. This is a mixture of water and NaCl to a known concentration. They offer 1000 ppm and 342 ppm. The TDS-3 is supposed to be calibrated against the 342 ppm fluid.
Amazon offers TDS calibration fluid. The product is pictured with two bottles, one at 342 ppm and behind it in the picture, 1000 ppm. Since the 342 ppm was in front and much larger, I assumed that's what would be sent. Well...we all know about assumptions.
The fluid I received was the 1000 ppm. When I contacted the company the representative said 1000 ppm was all they offered. This disagrees with their web site but I didn't press it; it's not that expensive (shipping was almost as much as the fluid itself) and I made some 333 ppm fluid by diluting what I had 3-to-1 with distilled water. The meters read low with my jury-rigged calibration fluid, 304 rather than 333. Not tremendously scientific but good enough for my purposes. The company did offer to take the fluid back - with me paying for shipping.
So I have rated this meter 3 because of the misleading approach to selling calibration fluid, the claim that they only offer 1000 ppm, and the discrepancy between the two meters when their web site says "no need to calibrate out of the box".
The meter is OK for my purposes. I can measure filter efficiency relatively rather than absolutely. I don't need precision; it's good enough to note that the filter reduces TDS without actually knowing the precise value of the reduction. In short, if I lose both of these (not inconceivable) I'd buy another.

Amway A101, E84, E-85, E-9225 Compatible Fit Replacement Water Filter Review

Amway A101, E84, E-85, E-9225 Compatible Fit Replacement Water Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well....Amazon needs to provide more information because even though it is marketed as Amway compatible it is not the same as Amway's.
First the filtering surface area of the filter is about ½ of the real Amway filter. Also, the filter is good for 6 months where the Amway filter is good for a year. Last, there is no documentation or any paper indentifying who makes the filter, how does it compare to Amway's, and who assumes product liability. I was given the name of the company that makes it but there is nothing in the filter that identifies the manufacturer. For all you can tell, it could have been made in someone's garage in China.
In all, you pay ½ the price but you get what you pay for: ½ the time, ½ the filter surface area and no company willing to assume product liability.
Won't buy it again.
