The Damp House: A Guide to the Causes and Treatment of Dampness Review

Have just looked at the book. Very comprehensive I bought the book because I wanted to know about condensation. It had a good number of causes. Have not read it in detail but have not seen if it gives numbers (%) of moisture which would cause dampness. Maybe I'm asking too much.

Winemaking: From Grape Growing to Marketplace Review

Winemaking: From Grape Growing to Marketplace
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book touches on all parts of the winemaking business from vineyard costs to winery costs and designs to marketing your wines. It has a good section on analytical testing procedures and 50 pages of charts, tables and conversions that come in handy.
The section on vineyard costs details year by year expenses from start-up through year 7. I also found the feasibility and finance section very helpful in starting up my own winery. The section on government regulations was very helpful in warning any prospective winery owners of what the ATF and state regulators expect. There are plenty of examples of good record keeping that various governments expect you to keep on hand at all times.
Of course this book also has 117 pages of good winemaking details along with good sections on microbiology, winery equipment, barrels and label designs. If this book has any obvious fault it would be that it does not go deep enough into some of these subjects, but then it would be thousands of pages long instead of the 440 pages it is.
An all around great book on winemaking and the rest of the business that goes with a winery and it's operation. This book has lots of good business information in it that I have not seen in any other winemaking book. I recommend it for anyone who not only wants to make great wine but also is serious about starting his own commercial winery.

Winemaking is an excellent resource for anyone making wine or seriously considering it. Beginning with the history of vines and wines, the book covers the growing of grapes, the process of making wine, specific types of wine, issues in marketing, and practical guidance on getting started, constructing a winery, and compliance with the law. Several appendices provide equipment sources, analytical procedures, scientific data, and a glossary. An accessible quick reference on enology, the new edition will include new information on marketing wines and on the use of computers in viticulture and winemaking.

In Suspect Terrain Review

In Suspect Terrain

McPhee writes elegantly plain English. He finds awesome beauty under foot, in vistas, and in words. His fine and pleasing writing deftly evokes the prodigious forces that shaped the landscape along Interstate 80 from Brooklyn to Chicago. McPhee is a magician: he makes deep geological time come so alive you can almost feel the earth move under your feet as it responds to the titanic forces of shifting continents, water, and ice.
McPhee writes epitomes of geological processes: here glacial forms (and diamonds!) in Indiana, there the Delaware Water Gap, or fossil thermometry by his "tour guide" Anita Harris, frank embarrassments to plate tectonics, Appalachian mountain making, petroleum cooking, or again the Ice Ages. This paean to nature, without mysticism, is printed in an old fashioned typeface on quality paper. It has no maps, sections, or illustrations. If you indexed the somewhat non-linear text yourself, this would be an instructive companion to take along on your next trip on eastern Route 80 (or an entire traverse of America if you add the other three books in McPhee's impressive "cross-section" of North America: Rising from the Plain, Basin & Range, Assembling California).

Complete Guide to Predictive and Preventive Maintenance Review

Complete Guide to Predictive and Preventive Maintenance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am half-way through this book and realize that I have used Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) for years. This was the approach we used because of HAZOP studies. If you look at the methodology, they are the same. It is an excellent book for first-pass economics of preventive maintenance (PM). Through numerous examples, he shows when to PM, when you are spending too much for PM, and when to just run the damn thing 'til it breaks. As I said, it is a great introduction. I have picked up Doc Palmer's book and can see I would be lost without preparation. If there are any short-comings, it is grammar and spelling. There are numerous typographical errors. Most engineers seem to have taken an-engineer's only english class in college. I found the errors troubling but the writing clear and concise. A very good book for a refresher (as in my case), or an introduction.

Espresso Coffee, Second Edition: The Science of Quality Review

Espresso Coffee, Second Edition: The Science of Quality
Average Reviews:

Unlike many coffee related books, this one goes a lot further. This book approaches coffee with a scientific approach, not a descriptive approach, which makes it harsher to read, but which provides info unavailable elsewhere.
By no means should this book be considered as your first coffee related book. Cover coffee basics through other more appropriate books. Once you've read a couple, if you really want to go deeper into the knowledge of coffee, this this book is for you. It requires that you have a scientific background though. You will see some chemistry formulas and it does discuss kinetic energy; it's somewhat technical.
I would give it a perfect 5 star rating, but I feel that some information in this book lacks relevance. In purchasing this book, I wanted to understand the science behind coffee to help me make better coffee. I felt that many passages of this book were irrelevant towards that goal.
Hope this helps !

Kitchens and Baths for Today and Tomorrow: Ideas for Fabulous New Kitchens and Baths

I am a Kitchen & Bath Designer and own my own Showroom. I have put together one of the best reference libraries, for my clients. I preordered this book and received it today. I generally give them a look thru and see if any pictures jump out. I must say that I found myself reading this book. It has great information for anyone wanting to redo their kitchen or bath. It educates in very clear language but not so elemetary to bore the design professional. It is peppered with little nuggets of wisdom from designers and the author .....things that even us "old" designers can learn from. It covers everything from floor to ceiling and everything in between. They have included sections on Universal design, which we are all always looking for new ideas to incorporate accessibility in an attractive manner. I would highly recommend this book to both the homeowner or designer.
