Suffering from psoriatic arthritis for five years and being on conventional arthritis treatment for two of those years still left me very symptomatic.
I then read this book and it gave me SIMPLE instructions on how to specifically alter my diet to remove symptoms of the arthritis almost completely. Although the disease is still slowly progressing, I no longer suffer from the symptoms like I used to. Its still there, but to a degree that my quality of life is no longer held hostage by pain.
This book showed me the cause/effect relationship that diet plays in chronic disease that NONE of my doctors understand.

Jerry Baker's Happy, Healthy Houseplants Review

Jerry Baker's Happy, Healthy Houseplants
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is important to note that this is not a reference for plant varieties, but rather a "...for Dummies" style guide to houseplant selection, maintenance, and propagation. The information is general, rather than plant-specific, and there are no specimen pictures in this book. Chapters are organized by subject, such as lighting considerations, warning sign recognition, & interior decorating, with cartoon pictures to illustrate specific points.
The most interesting thing about this book for me is its focus on compatibility issues: Jerry Baker genuinely wants you to have succees with your houseplants, and that requires a little bit of time spent thinking about what the PLANT will need, versus what you are willing and able to give it. He includes quite a few tables to help you find the most compatible plant for you and your home, accompanied by informative, easy to read explanations of how things like drafts, humidity, lighting, and watering contribute to the success or failure of your plant.
Bottom line: I happily recommend this book to beginning plant fanatics looking for insight! The information in this book is solid & engagingly presented, and sometimes even good for a laugh. If you are looking for an objective presentation, however, or if you are a person who equates "maintenance care" with bi-monthly trips to the florist, this book is not for you: There is a definite underlying flavor of "plants are people too."

The Aquarium Fish Survival Manual Review

The Aquarium Fish Survival Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a lot of information in it. It is written plainly, and is easy to understand. Sometime it gets a bit to detailed for the beginner in some sections like lighting. As a reference for plants and fish (fresh/marine) it's a good book to start with. In 12 years of fish keeping I have seen few books that can match it, especially for the price. I bought my copy back in 1995, and although I have many other books on the shelf on aquaria, this is the 1st book I grab.
Cons: This book is written in Europe, so some of the equipment they picture is not available here, but it still gives you lots of facts & rules of thumb on fish keeping that you can use. It is a little short on water "how to" manipulate water attribute, it only talks about pH, ammonia, and nitrite levels. Water hardness, iron, and CO2 level info is missing, much more a beginner and intermediate level book.

Keeping Warm in Hard Times: The Art of Saving Money on Home Heating Costs Review

Keeping Warm in Hard Times: The Art of Saving Money on Home Heating Costs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have you ever wished at times that you knew everything that someone who knows the home heating field knows? Here is all the inside information and knowledge that I have about how to keep your house warm for less. I wrote this book because I was unable to find a book like it. A book that is focused on saving on home heating costs, not on reducing your "carbon footprint" or just the little minor energy savings projects featured in other books. I also made it a point to correct the deficiencies I disliked in other books, like omitting key details like books on wood heating failing to discuss how to light a fire. Failure to recommend specific models or list a price or a web page for more information. I also include installation details so you know what it takes to install something, and I also cover how to operate it. While I do cover the many little things you can do to reduce drafts and improve the efficiency of your existing heating unit, in my book the main point is about the big things that you can do to greatly reduce your home heating costs. If you have been reading the news for the last few years, you already know that in the near future we can expect large increases in the cost of energy. The purpose of my book is to educate you about what options are available to heat your home for less, and what you can do now to dramatically reduce what it costs to keep your home warm. So when energy costs do go through the roof, you will still be able to afford to heat your home. Folks, as bad as things maybe at the moment, this is still the calm before the storm. Now is the time to get ready by remodelling your home so it is easier to heat and can be heated with cheaper fuels in more efficient heating units. I also strongly advise the wisdom of having more than one source of heat, so that you have a back up in case one fuel becomes too expensive to heat with or is unavailable. I also cover what to do in black outs and when you can't afford to pay the heating bills. Plus I have one chapter on air conditioning on how to reduce your AC electric bill or even how to be comfortable without AC.
If by the time you are reading this; energy costs have already exploded and you have no money to do much of anything with, I also cover things that you can do yourself without spending a lot and some heating tricks that don't cost a dime but can save you some money. While you would have been far better off to have taken corrective steps earlier, you can still make the best of it by doing what you can to reduce your heating costs. I discuss what you can do to improve your current heating system performance and what you can do to keep from freezing when you can not afford heat or don't have heat.

Golden Years My Ass: Adventures in Geriatric Indignity Review

Golden Years My Ass: Adventures in Geriatric Indignity
Average Reviews:

This book should be called Geriatric Senility. It is the most incoherent mess imaginable. I'll admit, I'm no big fan of Roger Welsch books, but I thought this one might be better. It isn't. It's just a bunch of unrelated stories with the only tie in being Welsch's constant complaining about being an old geezer. Sorry, but this book just doesn't cut it.
Edit: I'm going to add something so people know just how gross this book is. Roger writes about going to the doctor, and the doctor inserted his big fingers into Roger's rectum. I found it disgusting.

Roger Welsch's humorous take on his hahahaha Golden Years, a subject in which he now considers himself an expert. Portions of this book have been shared with friends facing medical problems and have each and every one found the humor encouraging and heartening. Anyone who is thinking about getting older will profit from a reading of this book. . .and of course anyone who is pretty much giving up might find something here that would change his mind. You can get old and complain, or get old and laugh; the choice is yours, and this volume gives you that choice.
