Very good book to have. Especially if you're having problems with "application" type questions on your tests. It comes with a CD too!. also full of questions, math questions as well..
You will actually learn a lot when you read the rationales. It gives you the reason why the answer is right or wrong. However, I was also expecting the book to have a generalized description of the most common drugs, but it doesn't. It is just full of questions, this will help you with your tests while in nursing school.

Raising Baby Green: The Earth-Friendly Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Baby Care Review

Raising Baby Green: The Earth-Friendly Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Baby Care
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Raising Baby Green was easy and quick to read and is a book I will keep around simply for the fact that Dr. Greene has put together an impressive resource guide of websites where one can find lots of information on greening one's life and home. I'm sure this book will be a great reference in the future when I'm looking to buy something, that being said, I had two problems with this book.
First, after about the second chapter this book starts to read like an advertisement to buy buy buy! For example, there is repeated references to bringing you own organic cotton sheets to wherever you give birth and using them to replace the sheets at the hospital/birthing center. Now call me pragmatic, but 300 count organic cotton sheets cost between $125-$175 for my bed, thus, these are not the ideal sheets TO GIVE BIRTH ON. They will be ruined and I know when I'm expecting a baby I don't generally have $175 dollars to throw away. Nor does he address the impracticality of packing home sheets covered in birth mess for washing.
While Dr. Green does repeatedly say you can do as little or as much greening as you like in your home, he really does seem to push for more. There comes a point when ripping up your current hardwoods floors which are perfectly good to put down new floors made from cork which is a renewable resource stops being green. If you gut your entire house to "remodel green" the question becomes, are you really being green? Or are you just buying into the latest fad and wasting valuable, usable resources?
This green baby guide seems to have bought into our consumer culture hook, line and sinker, which is the reason I was going to give it 4 stars, but I dropped that down to 3 stars when I ran into my second problem with this book: Mis-information.
On page 248 there is a section titled "How to Drive Green." Two of the suggestions given are changing your air filter (which he says will save you $130 in fuel economy) and filling your tank at night. Now if you google "10 gas saving myths" you will find several articles about, well, gas saving myths and both of these are on there. Neither filling up at night nor changing your air filter really increase you fuel economy.
Green goes on further to say that filling up at night, "decreases evaporation during pumping, so anything that escapes won't be cooked in to the ozone." So, those fumes I see/smell when I pump gas at night don't go into the ozone? Because it's night? So . . .where do they go? To the pub for a beer?
If Greene has mis-information about fuel economy in his book that can be disputed by a simple google search, it makes me wonder what else he got wrong.

Anybody interested in sustainable design concepts will enjoy this book immensely, but it will be most useful for architects and designers looking to use its ideas in both planning and execution. It's for planning more than for AD looky-lous, but makes for plenty of ideas. There's more depth than the first GSH, but it's not a major overhaul; the conceptual detail is still there, as are the well-shot photos, but a little more of each this time out. There's a wealth of inspiration here for arch students and practising architects alike, and plenty of real-world results. Kwok and Grundzik write well, and all told this is a book bound to be frequently consulted by many designers as more and more folks demand intelligent, sustainable building.

Each of the forty-two selected environmental strategies includes a description of principle and concept, step-by-step procedures for integrating the strategy, annotated design tables and charts, key issues to be aware of when implementing the strategy, and references to further resources. Over 500 sketches and color photos illustrate concepts and applications.

In this second edition, 10 new case studies are included to show successful implementation of green strategies and assessments of building performance. Site analysis and glazing strategies have been added and new tables and updated drawings simplify the application of concepts, preliminary system sizing, and integration of strategies.

Who knew that WD-40 can be used to remove tar from a car, to polish furniture, and to kill cockroaches? I had no idea that I could use Pam Cooking Spray to clean soap scum from shower doors, loosen rusty tool, or preventing ice cubes from sticking to the tray. I've now cleaned paintbrushes with Downy Fabric Softener, cleaned wallpaper with a slice of Wonder Bread, and cleaned crayon marks from the walls with Colgate Toothpaste. It's already saved me a fortune. This book is a must-have. It's the perfect reference book for solving any problem you're having around the house (from dirty laundry to filthy ovens) and the solutions are always a hoot. There are 30 uses for Coca-Cola alone, including cleaning oil spots from your driveway and unclogging a drain. Ingenious! I love this book, and will be giving a copy to my mother-in-law for her birthday - she'll appreciate Mr. Green's practicality and humor.

Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies Review

Running a Bed and Breakfast For Dummies

I have been an Innkeeper and now an Inn Consultant for 15 years. One of the things on my to do list was to put together all of my thoughts and blog articles into a book on Innkeeping which updated all of the prior ones that are no longer available. Now I am just thrilled that Mary White has written the definitive work on Innkeeping, and, of course, now I don't have to do it.
We tell our prospective innkeepers in our Seminars on Innkeeping a lot of the information that Mary has compiled, but here it is all in one place and easily accessible to everyone. Nothing left out and a clear understanding that Innkeeping is a 24/7 job with a lot of sacrifices. It is not retirement, and it is not Bob Newhart in a cardigan sweater. Mary lays it all out for the reader, clearly and with all of the downsides, as well as the joys of sharing your lives as innkeepers with some of the greatest guests that you could every hope to meet. We always said that they came as guests and left the Inn as friends. Mary has shown us all the way to do this effortlessly and with good humor.
This book will be a must read for innkeepers and prospective innkeepers alike. Great job, Mary!

Threads Sewing Guide: A Complete Reference from America's Best-Loved Sewing Magazine

If you sew a lot, than you probably know why good sewing guides are necessary. A sewing guide provides a reference for how some things are done.
This guide is a good one. It's a weighty volume with lots of photos and instruction for good techniques. From Accordion pleats to Zippers, it's got you covered in those details which turn homemade into handmade. With my daughter just now learning to sew, a current sewing guide was an essential addition to our books.
The diagrams and photographs are very clear, where photos are used, they have contrasting fabrics and thread colors to make construction methods easy to see. The diagrams are easy to follow and the text is clear and understandable.
There is a detailed index in the back for looking up specific techniques, so if you need to learn how to make welted pockets or buttonholes, or you want to look at hemming options, you can find the information quickly.
I recommend this book for beginners who want to take their sewing to the next level and to more advanced sewers who need a good reference for more involved techniques.

Relentless: A Novel Review

Relentless: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Koontz's newest book reminds me of his early stuff. After the last few books, I was feeling really tepid toward Koontz. His writing used to be predictable- always a thriller with a twist and great characterization. His more recent work has tasted a bit flat to me- almost as if he was trying to be contemplative and instead coming off sophomoric. Earlier books were very entertaining and always interesting, not necessarily fantastic literature but very adroit at entertaining the reader and hard to put down.
When I first started reading "Relentless", I thought, "Here we go again." We are introduced to the sweet but goofy Cubby who, coincidentally, is a writer. His wife, Penny, is the tough and capable daughter of survivalists and author of children's books featuring a rabbit with big ears. They, of course, have a child who is, at the tender age of six, a genius of the highest degree and currently working on a project he is unable to even begin to explain to his dad. They have a very lovable dog who also seems to be very special.
Cubby and family are plunged into a nightmare when the infamous Shearman Waxx, reclusive book critic, reviews Cubby's recently released book and skewers it. Despite Penny's warnings to "let it go", Cubby just can't. When he finds out that the reviewer frequents a restaurant where he and his family dine, he goes to lunch hoping to check the guy out. A brief encounter in the restaurant bathroom soon has Cubby wishing he'd followed his wife's advice.
Catastrophe ensues and Cubby and his litttle family are soon on the run from absolute evil of mythical proportions that seems to have practically supernatural resources.
Waxx makes for quite the sinister boogeyman and despite my initial misgivings, Cubby, his wife and kid and the group of eccentric family and friends that aid their flight and search for answers in a race to save their lives, turn out to be quite endearing. They have no idea what's coming for them and they must keep on the move and their wits about them to avoid, not just death- but a terrible one.
Koontz injects a hefty dose of what appears to be his light-up-the-darkness philosophy into the book. Cubby, despite his goofiness and mechanical ineptitude, has a dark secret in his past that makes his comedic and wonder-filled contribution to the literary world all the more amazing given what he has overcome.
An easy read- the time will fly by(read this straight through). Once past the initial chapters, the thriller aspect grabbed me and held me. Koontz likes to leave his reader hanging at the end of the chapter- something major just happened but nope, you're not going to find out until you readd the next chapter. So, if you aren't going to read it straight through, I imagine it would be fun to jump back into it with a new chapter.
Koontz does a good job developing his characters which is ultimately very necessary to suspend disbelief because some very unbelievable things take place in this book and even some of the characters are a tad far-fetched. I so enjoyed his characters, though, that I willed them into the realm of possibly existing in my mind.
If you are a fan of the Koontz thrillers(Lightning, Watchers, Phantoms) you will enjoy this. If you are new to Koontz, I highly recommend those titles I've mentioned. This book has some good suspense(a la Robert Ludlum) and a twist of the unexpected(Stephen King lite). The book does contain several scenes that describe graphic murder scenes which are a bit disturbing. The message of the book, overall, however, is a very positive one(Koontz does get a little heavy-handed with preaching his world view but it does not detract from the overall storyline).
Koontz makes no small show of telling us that we should hang on to our senses of humor, love and moments of grace despite the murder, mayhem and madness of the world and thus we keep the darkness at bay and good wins out over evil.

A Complicated Kindness: A Novel Review

A Complicated Kindness: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this book fascinating. On first reading, this book seemed to be one teenager's long downward spiral into depression, interspersed with a few beautiful or humorous moments. But a shadowy glimpse of a some more complex themes drew me back to it for a second reading, where I was delighted to find the writing tight and full of well-chosen imagery and recurring themes.
The narrator, Nomi, writes near the beginning: "People here just can't wait to die, it seems. It's the main event. The only reason we're not all snuffed at birth is because that would reduce our suffering by a lifetime. My guidance counsellor has suggested to me that I change my attitude about this place and learn to love it. But I do, I told her. Oh, that's rich, she said. That's rich."
Nomi chafes against the inflexibility and lack of forgiveness in many members of her religious community, but as she struggles to understand the undercurrents which have driven her mother and elder sister into the void beyond the town, she begins to be able to tap into the honesty of her family to imagine something bigger and better than the only place she knows. "I have a problem with endings," she writes, and she cannot satisfy her English teacher by drawing her essays to a neat close. In the same way, she can't seem to accept her pastor uncle's neat package of rigid definitions explaining her existence, with no mysteries or forgiveness for weakness. When a nurse at the hospital criticises her invalid friend Lydia for being so needy, Nomi objects 'But isn't that what a hosp...(ital is for?)" When the church throws out a man for being unable to overcome alcoholism, the reader wants to ask, "But isn't that what a church community is for?" Nomi has an innate sense that something is fundamentally wrong with her environment. But she recognises kindness, too, "in the eyes of people when they look at you and don't know what to say." Her uncle, "The Mouth", always knows what to say, and it never fails to be irrelevant and discouraging. But she values those whose love and concern go beyond the limitations of their prescribed answers, who can only love her and feel confused, without lashing out because they feel threatened by her ragged search to unite her family and find healing.
Nomi's dad, Toews' best character, embodies this combination of deep love and confusion. He holds rigidly to the prescribed order of the community while gently falling apart with grief. Wonderfully complex, Ray wears a suit every day, even gardening, wins an award for perfect church attendance and listens to the radio hymn programme every night. But he spends nights secretly rearranging rubbish at the dump and slowly selling off the household furniture while letting his daughter see, with a sad and affectionate humour, that he doesn't know the answers.
Toews addresses two different kinds of nostalgia: the oppressive desire of The Mouth to cling to concrete vestiges of a past lifestyle, such as the town's windmill, and Nomi's fond remembrance of living people and experiences in the community that are both shared and uniquely hers. Even though I desperately wanted to tell her at the end of the book, "fly away!" I was moved by her dad's loyal attempt to encourage and empower her in the only way he knows how.
I think readers who are confident they know everything about God already and have set answers to life's questions will struggle with this book and find it irreverent. But I think other readers will be inspired by Nomi's quest in faith to find acceptance, forgiveness, joy and a love which extends beyond tidy definitions.

Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art

Let me start by saying I love this book! Finally a complete guide that is easy to read and affordable. The descriptions, explanations, and step-by-step preparation methods are written for the novice and are easy to follow. I especially like the quick reference on page 30 outlining the basic essential oils. I copied it onto a piece of bright purple paper and put it on my refrigerator for easy reference. The book is full of them, and I think they're wonderful to use in concocting new, safe and different aromatherapy mixtures. Likewise I enjoyed the herbal, aromatic recipes in chapter ten. I would have liked, though, to have seen photos or drawings of some of the major herbs and procedures described throughout the book. Since I am just beginning in my studies in aromatherapy, it would have been nice to have a visual reference to look to after reading about a specific herb's positive attributes and usage. That said, Kathi Keville and Mindy Green have done a remarkable job of translating the seemingly enigmatic language of aromatherapy. The charts in chapter four are especially helpful. Now lavender oil has become a relaxing addition to all my baths!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting and Running a Coffee Bar Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting and Running a Coffee Bar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the things that struck me most about this book is that it seems perfectly balanced. By this I mean that it covers all the general business angles of running a coffee bar, but it never loses sight of its coffee-oriented focus. While there's certainly plenty of information that people running other businesses would find useful in here, you'll never find yourself thinking that you could have gotten the same information out of a more generic business or restaurant business guide. Everything focuses on the particular application of principles to the unique issues and problems that face the owner and operator of a coffee bar. Even when discussing cross-promotion and various forms of publicity the book discusses things that are likely to work best with your products and services.
You won't just find information in here on business plans, licensing issues, equipment, suppliers, staffing, and publicity however. There are guides to roasting beans (in case you want to create your own blends, or just want to understand what you're buying), creating a wide variety of coffee drinks and related treats, and cultivating repeat customers.
In addition to the vast wealth of information, the attitude with which this book was written is fantastic. It's practical yet positive, realistic yet optimistic. It livens things up with a dry wit yet never allows the humor to get in the way of the information it's trying to convey. It will make you excited about even topics like marketing your business without ever coming across as empty cheerleading.
I quite enjoyed reading this book, and have to firmly remind myself after reading it that no, I really am not the kind of person who can go out and start such a business. Because after reading all of this handy and fascinating information, the prospect is delightfully tempting!

Uniquely Felt Review

Uniquely Felt
Average Reviews:

With a growing number of felting books out there this is the book that you will continue to use long after you learn the basic technique! Chris White manages to give you all the basic history and technical "hows" and "whys" in a way that is easy to understand along with lots of fabulous color visuals. She then follows up with a variety of techniques (including nunofelting and cobweb felt!) and 46 projects. Every time I pick it up I find another bit of information either on types of wool or appropriate tools for specific projects or just words of advice from Chris's ample well of knowledge. A well rounded book presented in a very user friendly format! A winner, for certain.

Orchids For Dummies Review

Orchids For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title says it all. It is a good starter and you'll learn how to take care of your orchids. The chapter about resources is truly excellent. However, this book won't take you much further from the basics, in my opinion. The colour plates are beautiful, but they are just a handful (8 pages). Black and white pictures don't make much sense here, after all this book is about orchids, right?
In the same price range I strongly recommend "Growing orchids" by Rittershausen, which contains almost the same information of more expensive books, and shows hundreds of colour pictures of very good quality. If you are willing to spend a little more, buy either "Understanding orchids" or "Orchid's grower companion". Here you are paying for the "for Dummies" trademark. This book would be a good buy at half of the price.
As of now, all the 5 stars reviews have been written by people with ONE review in their accounts. Ask yourself "how come?"
