I have a lot of trouble with clutter, so I read a lot of these books--and this one is the best I've ever seen. It doesnt just tell you how to get organized, but all the photos are so beautiful and show you how to do it.
This book is so funny, too. My husband kept asking me why I was laughing. He wanted to know why I was cracking up at a book about cleaning the house.
This would be a great wedding gift or for a sister or a friend.

The Home Owner's Journal, Fifth Edition Review

The Home Owner's Journal, Fifth Edition

I ordered this one and the Home Owner's Diary, intending to keep one for myself and give the other as a present. They are both the same price, and from the amazon descriptions I couldn't tell which one would be better. Both are good, but I like the way the Journal is organized better, it gives you more room to add additional notes etc. on each page in an extra column. Also it has cute little quotes on some pages. I ended up giving the journal as a present and returning the Diary ... I will re-order the journal for myself. If you can't make up your mind either - maybe this will help you.

Housekeeping Secrets My Mother Never Taught Me Review

Housekeeping Secrets My Mother Never Taught Me
Average Reviews:

This book is a lifesaver for me. Growing up, my family did the picking up and putting away around the house on a daily basis, and I washed dishes daily, but a housekeeper came in once a week to do the heavy cleaning. My mother ran a successful business, and didn't do much cooking or cleaning at home. Therefore, I didn't learn the way most women do - watching their mothers. Fast forward to my first apartment - hovering over my very own toilet, I wasn't exactly sure how to clean it. Joni Hilton works the house from top to bottom, room by room, explaining exactly what kind of dirt can build up in which places and how to most efficiently get rid of it. She even tells you her favorite cleaing products. Other housekeeping books are such boring Martha Stewart manuals that not only are they a drag to read, but they leave you feeling completely incapable of ever having a clean house. Joni Hilton's book is a quick, funny, light read, and her clean house is very attainable.

The Family Manager's Everyday Survival Guide Review

The Family Manager's Everyday Survival Guide by Kathy Peel
What a wonderfully refreshing resource Ms. Peel's book is! The Family Manager's Everyday Survival Guide is not only filled with useful, practical effective tips for managing your home, but the author's philosophy is so REAL. She immediately provides the reader with "10 Reasons to Get Organized", followed by "10 Reasons Why You'll Never Get Organized and Stay That Way Forever" - how true to life! So many books on organizing and time management teach just one way of doing things, and when this style does not match the reader's personal style, a sense of failure is created; but not so with Everday Survival Guide.
This book is well written, easy to follow, and (dare I say it) well organized. It is a guide, reference book, and primer all in one. Reading one of the basic principles in organizing early in the book is a big plus for the reader: "Organization is an ongoing art, a process, not an end product." This is exactly what organizing professionals teach their clients, and a lesson not to be dismissed lightly. By stating this right up front, Kathy Peel has tuned the reader in to the fact that there is nothing wrong with them, and the quest for finding balance in their life is shared by all women.
I particularly enjoyed the home management exercises, such as looking through rooms in your home for "secret" storage space, and not taking anything for granted in uncluttering your home. Using checklists as a time-saver is a wonderful idea, avoiding being disorganized on trips, for parties, etc.
I've added The Family Manager's Everyday Survival Guide to my recommended reading list for my workshops and teleclasses, and encourage readers to buy two copies: one for themselves, and one for a friend. Happy organizing!

Coming Clean: Dirty Little Secrets from a Professional Housecleaner Review

Coming Clean: Dirty Little Secrets from a Professional Housecleaner

I found this book disappointing, especially after reading the description and the glowing reviews posted here. I thought I would get a lot more tips on how to clean quickly and efficiently, but I only found one tip I felt would make a difference. I also thought the book would give a better plan of attack for cleaning the whole house, but the plan was scattered throughout the book. I would have liked to have seen that plan presented in a single place (perhaps as a review at the end of the book.)
I also felt this book just scratched the surface of the hows and whys of cleaning and organizing. I think people would be much better served buying two separate books that go more in depth into both topics. I don't know which book to suggest for cleaning, but for organizing "Organizing From The Inside Out" by Julie Morganstern is the best.

A book about "work simplification in your home," Coming Clean offers a no-nonsense plan of attack for weekly, monthly, and seasonal chores. As a commonsense approach to the business of running a clean, organized home, Schar Ward champions simple tools and routines. She discusses supplies, equipment, and planning, and focuses on specific areas in the home (including dreaded children's rooms), problem surfaces, and thinking clean when it comes to remodeling.

Just Clean Enough: Home Organization in an Imperfect World Review

Just Clean Enough: Home Organization in an Imperfect World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a busy woman who is juggling home, family, and career, this is a book of 365 easy cleaning and organizing tips that can be done one at a time, in just a few minutes a day.
As the authors point out, there are two isses with trying to keep a home clean. One is finding the time to do a top-to-bottom cleaning of any room, let alone the whole house. The other is feeling we need to clean completely, right down to the last dust bunny that is hiding behind a very heavy, difficult to move china cabinet. We are given permission to leave such dust bunnies alone and instead clean what is obvious in small steps that can be done over time.
Every room of the house is covered with tips such as taking 10 minutes to clean out a make-up drawer in the bathroom, keeping fruit in the refrigerator to cut down on countertop clutter, using an anti-bacterial wipe to quickly clean all the doorknobs, and keeping an attractive basket in each room as a catch-all for papers, toys, etc., so they don't end up scattered on the floor or tabletops and can be put away later. Some of the ideas are obvious but I found others that I hadn't thought of such as freshening a room by placing a scented dryer sheet on the back side of a running fan for a few minutes.
This book isn't for those who prefer to do a full house or room cleaning in a day, but those who don't have the time or motivation to do so will benefit from the 5-20 minute tips in this book that yields the same result over time.
