Leafing through the pages of this instructional art textile book, one will find some of the most creative fabric surface design ideas in print. This book is a celebration of color and image design, and Yvonne is not afraid to explore every possible permutation of the color wheel in her foray into textile surface design. Basic Color Theory and History, Surface Design Technique, Dyeing and Painting Principles, and Image Transfer are thoroughly covered in the first third of Yvonne's well-written and informative text, followed by a sampling of general surface embellishment techniques. A Nuclear Engineer in the Twentieth Century Review

(More customer reviews)I'm glad this book exists because there are not others like it, but I cannot give it an enthusiastic recommendation. I'm going to study nuclear engineering and I wanted to read the history of the nuclear industry. Kupp tells you a lot about the history, but it is sandwiched between the rest of Kupp's life story. If you want to read Robert William Kupp's autobiography, here it is. If you want a history of the development of nuclear power in America, read the middle third only. (If someone knows a better book, please let me know!)
One last thing: This book is chock full of typos and plain bad English. It is also chopped up into little vignettes. It's not smooth reading.

From the PrefaceThe Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) of 1990 significantly affect commercial and industrial combustion devices such as boilers, incinerators, and other burners. Under the new emission regulations already promulgated and those being developed, compliance will require improved equipment, more detailed operator training, new permits, more complex monitoring and reporting, as well as other requirements. All emissions must be considered, e.g., particulates and gases (acid, organic, hazardous, NOx, ozone). Many industrial boiler plants have been retrofitted to change fuel and/or combustion operating conditions as a means to meet new air pollution control requirements. New regulations will continue to be developed by the CAAA of 1990 that will require changes to other boilers and combustion systems. This book is intended to acquaint industry with the equipment and operating options that are available to reduce emissions while controlling costs. Specific topics are addressed, including regulatory requirements, boiler and burner equipment retrofits, combustion modification, air emission control and monitoring equipment selection, maintenance, and cost. The twelve chapters of this book are written by seven different authors. The authors use fifty-two figures and forty-four tables to help explain the written text and to make it more interesting and useful to readers.

(More customer reviews)I have looked at the pre-packaged material to be used to print photos for quilting but never purchased any. I plan to do so today! After reading POSTERIZE IT!, I have so many ideas for new wall hangings that I don't know which one to start with!
I have used a digital camera for years and have several wonderful outdoor photos that I always thought would be nice on my walls but just didn't want to hang yet another photo frame. Now I don't have to. I can take that photo, print it on photo fabric and create a quilted wall hanging instead. I can even do the window lattice that I have always wanted to do in quilting but never did. This book will accomplish two of my "want-to-d0's" and I am excited to get started.
The book gives you five projects and also basic information on how to put a quilt together. It explains how to make your own printable fabric and which pre-packaged printable fabric they like and why. They also talk about which inks are best and how to care for your photo quilt once you create it. And since quilter's are very visual people, there are plenty of photos/graphics so you can see what they are explaining.
You can add embellishments such as appliqué or 3-D items to give it that extra touch. Or use your scanner and create a collage to print. The book gives you step-by-step directions on how to create the photo quilt from what supplies you will need right through to how to bind it.

(More customer reviews)If you can avoid a class using this book: don't take the class! Please... I beg you! I've never written a review on a book, but this one was so horrible, I just HAD to.
I was forced against my will to take a class using this book. It is the most UNCLEAR book ever written. The explanations for environmental implementations are absolutely vague and it almost seems absurd until you do loads of research on that one topic, or get some help from someone else. The author likes to bring up random theories that seem to be irrelevant. The problems in the book assume that you remember everything from fluid mechanics to chemical engineering to astro physics, and rather than being a guide to learning, this book and its reading problems are more like a test of your patience.
Here is an example of what generally goes on in this book:
Henry's law states that p=k(H)C
Using Bolzmann's constant, we end up with log(p)*zyx/abc*mno
with NO explanations whatsoever of what it means, what any variable stands for, how it relates to the environment or engineering. It's quite frankly frustrating!

(More customer reviews)I first borrowed this book from the library and found it so useful I bought it from Amazon. I live in the Washington, D.C. area and felt very unprepared for emergencies in the aftermath of September 11. This guide helps you create a family emergency plan and give you tips on keeping safe in more routine situations. Particularly useful was their suggestion of a disaster supplies kit, which I now have. Some items in the kit were predictable--like a first aid kit, but others were not and make a lot of sense like a NOAA emergency radio, list of key addresses and contacts, extra prescription medications etc. While I don't expect to need it for an evacuation or terrorist emergency, these are supplies I would need in other emergencies from power outtages to storms etc. They recommend that you pack this in a carryall and take with you on trips as well.
Also useful was the idea of a family emergency plan--places to meet outside your home in case of an emergency. This would have been very useful on September 11 when all phone and cell phone lines in this area were busy and roads were clogged while people didn't have alternate ways to get home.
Other useful topics are in areas such as fire emergency, food related dangers, weather related disasters, dangerous encounters with animals and insects and a great chapter on home related emergencies.
I think every home should have a reference book like this one.

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent blueprint on how to have a terrible relationship with almost anyone in the building trades. I haven't read about outwitting squirrels, neighbors, deer, mice and other critters, but if the attitude and approach is the same as in this book....
Any building process, especially a renovation project, relies on fully developed plans, drawings and a well informed owner. This point is glossed over in this book. Oh! You might want to use an architect or designer for big projects like the pyramids, but you really don't need one for small things, like kitchen/bath renovations or room additions... Wait for your builder to do something and then decide that it should/could have been done differently..
Well, you do need a design professional. If you don't know what you want - or even if you do, but don't have it documented relying instead on a contractor's clairvoyance and your own eloquence - you are going to be disappointed in the final product.

The real point of this book - although never well expressed - is that it is of the first importance to work with reputable people. A tradesman whose office is in his hip pocket is likely not going to have the resources to do anything more than basic handiman work.
It IS a funny book - unless you want to get your project done.

As a cooking novice, I was looking for a simple guide that would not give me recipes, but would tell me how to do the things in a recipe, like browning meat and creating a soup broth.
Boy, did this book save my life. It had the answer to every question I had - and I had many. Because of The Kitchen Answer Book, I came off looking like a cooking pro, instead of the cooking dunce that I am. This book is very interesting as well because it tells you how to maintain your utensils and tools and gives you the history behind food.
My family went away well fed and not poisoned. Thank God for Hank Rubin and his wonderful book!
