Living Safe in an Unsafe World: The Complete Guide to Family Preparedness Review

Living Safe in an Unsafe World: The Complete Guide to Family Preparedness

I first borrowed this book from the library and found it so useful I bought it from Amazon. I live in the Washington, D.C. area and felt very unprepared for emergencies in the aftermath of September 11. This guide helps you create a family emergency plan and give you tips on keeping safe in more routine situations. Particularly useful was their suggestion of a disaster supplies kit, which I now have. Some items in the kit were predictable--like a first aid kit, but others were not and make a lot of sense like a NOAA emergency radio, list of key addresses and contacts, extra prescription medications etc. While I don't expect to need it for an evacuation or terrorist emergency, these are supplies I would need in other emergencies from power outtages to storms etc. They recommend that you pack this in a carryall and take with you on trips as well.
Also useful was the idea of a family emergency plan--places to meet outside your home in case of an emergency. This would have been very useful on September 11 when all phone and cell phone lines in this area were busy and roads were clogged while people didn't have alternate ways to get home.
Other useful topics are in areas such as fire emergency, food related dangers, weather related disasters, dangerous encounters with animals and insects and a great chapter on home related emergencies.
I think every home should have a reference book like this one.

What to Do 'til the Cavalry Comes: A Family Guide To Preparedness in 21st Century America Review

What to Do 'til the Cavalry Comes: A Family Guide To Preparedness in 21st Century America

I recently attended a preparedness seminar in Long Island, NY sponsored by Congressman Steve Israel. This book is not a guide just for hurricanes, but for most disasters possible in today's world.
The other speakers, the author, and his guide made it clear that WE as individuals and families must take responsibility for ourselves until help arrives, no matter what the situation.
Nothing in the seminar, or the guide was a secret, however, this book puts the basics of being ready in a clear and concise forum and covers the needs to prepare hurricanes, floods & terrorism. It's all about us having food, water, shelter and a plan for ourselves in the event of a disaster.
I found the information to be current and the checklists complete, and yes, even the author's attempts at humor....funny.
I also learned about shelf-stable foods (a term I'd never heard used before) I'm ordering a couple of cases of the A-Pack MREs for my family and you should too....the samples I got were great.
It's a quick and easy book to read and will be a part of my preparedness kit.

The 21st Century has been a time of unparalleled disasters around the world. Tsunamis, floods and earthquakes of seemingly near-biblical proportions have struck worldwide, while the United States has been hammered by hurricanes, seen flooding take lives and been attacked by terrorists who continue to threaten our national security to this day.
Since the attacks of 9/11, our elected leadership has repeatedly issued warnings for all Americans to prepare—yet most have not.
Having seen the government's failures after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, who would you rather depend on to provide for your family's needs after a disaster?
What to Do 'til the Cavalry Comes gives families a basic plan, one most anybody can live by. It is a must-read for those who wish to improve their readiness for living in 21st Century America, knowing—"When you live prepared, you're prepared to live!"

This book is easily one of the least informative and poorly written leaflets I have ever purchased. Most of the info is ridiculous and unsafe. There are many other books, as well as information on the internet that would be of more help to you than this waste of your time.

Life After Doomsday Review

Life After Doomsday

This is THE best book on the subject of Nuclear war and other major disasters I have ever read. Dr. Clayton walks you through everything nuclear, from effects of air bursts, ground bursts, EMP, to every other nuclear topic imaginable. While famous for its nuclear information, this book is writen as a primer to surviving ANY disaster. Our Motto here at Alpha Group is(as you know) "It doesn't matter what causes the situation, you should be prepared to survive it". This book fits perfectly with that philosophy.
I consider this book one of the "MUST HAVE" books in any survival library. Not only does this book contain fantastic and interesting reading, but with its dozens of charts, lists, drawings and photos, this book serves as an excellent reference on surviving ANY major disaster. It is one of the few reference books I keep in my personal bookshelf beside the computer. When I read this book for the first time I was amazed by what I THOUGHT I knew. I was VERY wrong in many of my beliefs. Even the US government used Dr. Clayton's research to revise their policies in some areas.
Chapters covered include:
It's a disaster
Everything you ever wanted to know about nuclear war
To flee or not to flee
Home sweet hole
Nobody makes housecalls anymore
and MANY others that will keep you reading, and more importantly, will keep you alive no matter what the disaster.

Starting A New Life In Rural America: 21 Things You Need to Know Before You Make Your Move Review

Starting A New Life In Rural America: 21 Things You Need to Know Before You Make Your Move
Average Reviews:

This is a great book to start with if you think you want to move to 'the sticks', as the author puts it. Benson's writing is strightforward, easy to read, and right to the point. This is not a detailed everything-about-everything book, but he does give links to useful information if you choose to pursue a certain topic further -- one reason it might be wise to start with this book as a means to see which (if any) more books you might need to purchase.
Benson covers everything from picking your land, real estate issues, dealing with pesky 'critters' and managing your septic tank, to integrating smoothly into rural community life and rural etiquette. I have extended family that grew up and reside in the country, but I didn't know nearly as much about their lives as I thought I did. This book helped me realize there is a big difference between country living on an acre or two, with a little extra grass to mow and room for a garden, and truly RURAL living. After reading this book, you will know without a doubt whether or not rural living is for you. I highly reccommend this book as a great place to start.

Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series) Review

Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)
Average Reviews:

This book is written as if Steve Solomon is the grandfatherly type telling those who know nothing of gardening what's what. Initially, I was a bit put-off by this tone, but the author has earned a right to that tone and his opinions. I quickly became very interested in what he has to say, in that he rejects many ideas and fads on intensive, hyper dense garden production. Steve Solomon has been around long enough to have tried some of the high density, intensive gardening ideas and found them wanting.
I had to really chuckle when I read his rudimentary back to basics tool list consisting of a shovel, a bow rake, a hoe and a file to keep them sharp and useful. A simple wheelbarrow, buckets, knife and stone fill out his recomendations. He's so very right when he suggests that it doesn't take an armada of gadgets and do-hickies and specialty tools to make a very sucessful garden. And his comments on using some commonly sold garden gadgets make for humorous images for those who have suffered too short handles, stooped backs and the associated aches and pains. Many folks pondering the latest garden knick-knack catalog could do well to remember Solomon's basic tools will get the job done advice. Admittedly, he does sound like what MY grandfather would've said in the tool chapter. ("Put down that dreambook, pick up that hoe, and get to doing something useful." ... )
What I particularly thought useful was the idea of returning to planting based on choosing plant spacing not for intensity of harvest if thoroughly irrigated, but rather choosing less dense spacing based on potential for drought. In the drought chapter, Solomon makes the case that earlier gardeners more concerned with crop survival than sheer bulk of harvest knew to choose spacing that allows for stronger, more durable plants that better survive droughts. There's a lot more to it than that. I'm oversimplifying his points to make a point, and that is that there is something useful in this book for everyone; from those who've never dug their hands in dirt to those who think that they have a "better way".
I'm currently recommending this book as a good solid intro to veggie gardening that will produce the produce for those interested in delving beyond the picture books. Frankly, I've got lots of gardening and permaculture books and yet this was the first that I've seen fit to review, as I think it bears some recommendation to a wider audience.

The decline of cheap oil is inspiring increasing numbers of North Americans to achieve some measure of backyard food self-sufficiency. In hard times, the family can be greatly helped by growing a highly productive food garden, requiring little cash outlay or watering.

Currently popular intensive vegetable gardening methods are largely inappropriate to this new circumstance. Crowded raised beds require high inputs of water, fertility and organic matter, and demand large amounts of human time and effort. But, except for labor, these inputs depend on the price of oil. Prior to the 1970s, North American home food growing used more land with less labor, with wider plant spacing, with less or no irrigation, and all done with sharp hand tools. But these sustainable systems have been largely forgotten. Gardening When It Counts helps readers rediscover traditional low-input gardening methods to produce healthy food.

Designed for readers with no experience and applicable to most areas in the English-speaking world except the tropics and hot deserts, this book shows that any family with access to 3-5,000 sq. ft. of garden land can halve their food costs using a growing system requiring just the odd bucketful of household waste water, perhaps two hundred dollars worth of hand tools, and about the same amount spent on supplies — working an average of two hours a day during the growing season.

Steve Solomon is a well-known west coast gardener and author of five previous books, including Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades which has appeared in five editions.
