This book is good for those looking for a wide surface treatment of the whole spectrum of photography. Points of disucssion are almost always clearly illustrated with photographs or high-quality drawings, and many specific examples of equipment are given. This book will inspire you to try many different photographic techniques. However, all those nifty photos and pages devoted to escoterica don't leave much room for the basics, and so this book can't be reccomended as a decent manual or textbook for raw beginners trying to improve their photography.

Just Clean Enough: Home Organization in an Imperfect World Review

Just Clean Enough: Home Organization in an Imperfect World
Average Reviews:

For a busy woman who is juggling home, family, and career, this is a book of 365 easy cleaning and organizing tips that can be done one at a time, in just a few minutes a day.
As the authors point out, there are two isses with trying to keep a home clean. One is finding the time to do a top-to-bottom cleaning of any room, let alone the whole house. The other is feeling we need to clean completely, right down to the last dust bunny that is hiding behind a very heavy, difficult to move china cabinet. We are given permission to leave such dust bunnies alone and instead clean what is obvious in small steps that can be done over time.
Every room of the house is covered with tips such as taking 10 minutes to clean out a make-up drawer in the bathroom, keeping fruit in the refrigerator to cut down on countertop clutter, using an anti-bacterial wipe to quickly clean all the doorknobs, and keeping an attractive basket in each room as a catch-all for papers, toys, etc., so they don't end up scattered on the floor or tabletops and can be put away later. Some of the ideas are obvious but I found others that I hadn't thought of such as freshening a room by placing a scented dryer sheet on the back side of a running fan for a few minutes.
This book isn't for those who prefer to do a full house or room cleaning in a day, but those who don't have the time or motivation to do so will benefit from the 5-20 minute tips in this book that yields the same result over time.

Theron Randolph was primary in going before Congress and getting labels on food, and he defined Chemical Sensitivity as a diagnosis. This book, and the page on the Manic-Depressive cycle, have a place in history as watershed events. We all benefit from his courage and intelligence. In decades of meticulous testing of patients at his clinic in Chicago, eliminating allergens and adding them back one at a time, Dr. Randolph demonstrated and documented the basis of the Manic-Depressive cycle. As a woman Physicist, I found his book intriguing in the careful, methodical approach to physical and mental illness, and surprised that a person's mood changes could be triggered by environmental factors. I tried rotating my foods and adding them back one at a time. I found that wheat and corn gave me arthritis (!), and that my mind would be less clear with certain foods and chemicals. The Rotation Diet can certainly be unbalanced if not managed properly, and people can become allergic cripples by avoiding the modern world; so the insights must be balanced with common sense. My quality and enjoyment of life is much better as a result of reading this book. I have gone beyond Randolph's neutralizing injections, to use Devi Nambudripad's pressure point clearing for allergies, as a permanent treatment. This eliminates the need for injections. However, I continually monitor the well-being of my students, my family and myself using the insights I gained reading this book.

Liquid Jade: The Story of Tea from East to West Review

Liquid Jade: The Story of Tea from East to West
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This study of tea is a fine example of why so many people love history. Beatrice Hohenegger has taken something people use every day but rarely give more than a passing thought to and traced its history back thousands of years, encountering many strange byways and interconnections which link it to a much larger story. This, not the stereotypical long dry lists of battles and kings some unfortunates associate with the subject, is what makes history fascinating.
Liquid Jade is divided into four segments. In the first Hohenegger studies the origins of tea drinking in East Asia, describing the many legends of how tea first became the indispensable drink of the aristocracy and then the general population. I laughed at the stories of tea being picked by specially trained monkeys and by young girls deprived of spicy foods lest they contaminate the plants' aroma, and I was intrigued to read of tea's connections to the development of Buddhism (particularly Zen), Confucianism, and Daoism.
The second segment is devoted to tea's arrival in the West. Here we see the Europeans being introduced to and falling in love with tea, with a few unhappy missteps (A Portuguese woman boiled some tea leaves, threw away the water, and served the leaves to her unfortunate guests!) Once again Hohenegger does a fine job linking tea to the larger historic picture, identifying connections to the development of imperialism and colonization, and to the crazes for porcelain and opium.
In the third part Hohenegger providews a miscellany of details and trivia about tea, including the invention of tea-bags and iced tea, the ongoing controversy between those who advocate MIF or TIF, and the class differences between High and Low tea. I enjoyed this part best just because of the variety and scope of the information. Finally, in the fourth part Hohenegger examines tea and tea production today, describing the impact of terrorism in some tea growing areas, the role of environmentalism, and continuing concerns for the plight of tea workers.
Hohenegger writes with great detail and a light touch of humor now and then. Her scholarship is impeccable and made approachable by her fine writing style and dry wit. I hope we see more from her in the future.

Average Reviews:

"How to Sell Your Home in Any Market" is really a great read. It's both entertaining and chock full of great information. The author outlines the reasons some homes sell and others don't. Then he goes through techniques for staging a home, how to price a home the right way and why some agents aren't completely honest in their pricing. He explains lots of different marketing ideas, websites, and advertising methods and then he starts talking about "desperation methods". He also has a start to finish outline of the selling process, and explains some differences when selling a home on your own or using a Realtor.
But what really set this book apart was all the real life stories. For every section, he has a couple stories explaining how each technique was used and what made it work. Really terrific! I rate this 5 stars! How to Sell Your Home in Any Market: 6 Reasons Why Your Home Isn't Selling... and What You Can Do to Fix Them

This book is beautifully written. How Susanna Barlow is able to make the writing itself, as well as the "characters" and "story", hold sway over and above our facination with polygamy is testimony to the power of this memoir. The book so envelopes you with young Susanna's life, with her love and pain, with her struggle to know her own worth and realize her truth in the midst of abuse and neglect, that you feel as if you lived through it with her, that she is forever a part of you. This is literature--beautiful, poignant, set on the razor's edge of emotion. If you read this book, you won't be sorry. I eagerly await the sequel.

Young Susanna doesn't know anything other than the family environmentthat has been created for her—a system without regard for society orman's laws. Raised in a sequestered home in a busy city neighborhood, everything beyond the front gate is off-limits.

The isolation proves to be a breeding ground for abuse, and Susannastruggles to reconcile her desire to escape and her need to belong. Thebook recounts six critical years in Susanna's life as she comes to termswith her conditions.

This coming-of-age story is as much a testament to survival as it is tosurrender. Pushed to the limits of her coping abilities, Susanna triesanything she can to bring about the peace that seems always out of reach.

In an impulsive moment and an act of daring she contacts a newspaperjournalist and finds herself in a predicament she never before considered. That decision becomes the impetus that propels her finally to where shewants to be and to find what was always there.

In this honest memoir, the author conveys the deep struggles she mustface to navigate her unusual childhood and to overcome obstacles ofabuse as well as the isolation that polygamy requires. It is a journey thatchallenges the strength of hope and proves that the smallest acts can wieldthe mightiest power.

Having a competent butler is one way to develop that much-needed edge.Butlers & Household Managers, 21st Century Professionals is also useful for any man or woman who would like to use some of the butler's know-how to enhance his or her own life style. The many checklists in Butlers & Household Managers, 21st Century Professionals cover every kind of situation a butler deals with and are designed, in conjunction with the chapter they supplement, to walk a person successfully through those situations and so increase his or her confidence. No amount of copying actions mechanically will make a butler, however. It is necessary to understand the point of view of the butler to then handle any given situation as a butler would. This book absolutely the worst when it comes to formatting. The pages are broken down into four columns. Questions and answers are then squeezed into these 1 inch narrow columns with the worst line and sentence breaks you could imagine.
The formatting is so bad, the table of contents comes between chapter 1 and chapter 2.
The only reason to get this book is that there isn't anything else out there in the form of a test prep book.
The first two reviews sound like paid endorsements by relatives of the author, did the read they same book I did?

Business Models Made Easy Review

Business Models Made Easy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I loved this book. It is short, simple, but it gets its points across. It is about the business startup process: From concept, to plan, to building. The goal of this book was to show the reader:
1. What a business concept or model is.
2. Explain how to evaluate a business concept so it can realistically make good money.
3. How to write a business plan in order to build the business concept or model.
A good business concept or model will rate favorably regarding the following 6 criteria (Debelak, page 4):
1. Acquire high value customers - favorable condition: without spending a lot of money
2. Offer significant value to customers - favorable condition: having a significant value to customers - favorable condition: having a significant competitive advantage.
3. Deliver products or services with high margins - favorable condition: with high quality and few opportunities for error.
4. Provide for customer satisfaction - favorable condition: service and training, if needed, provided by someone else.
5. Maintaining market position - favorable condition: market position is protected or a steady stream of new products or services can be maintained.
6. Funding the business - favorable condition: investments reasonable for market size and risk both for startup costs and for market maintenance.
As I read this book I thought the author did a wonderful job explaining what a business model was, how to diagram one, and how to evaluate the diagram in terms of soundness and profitability using the six criteria listed herein above. Chapter 3 was good because it outlined business models for 18 different companies. Chapter 9 was great because it examined the analysis process for all three generic types of companies: retail, manufacturing, and services. And Chapter 10 was great because it tied the Business Concept (business model) idea to the Business Plan (action steps) idea that is necessary to actually convert the model into reality.
Why is this such a good book? Because you should want to develop a winning business model BEFORE you write your business plan. You can start a business that can only hope to make minimal profits. Or you can start a business that can make loads of profits. Without understanding the business model behind your startup BEFORE you start it you won't know what kind of profits you will be working for. And you should care a lot about what kind of profits you are going to work for when considering the effort you have to put out in order to research and write the business plan and actually start the business by following the plan. 5 stars!
PS. What I don't understand is why the plethora of business plan books on the market today have not covered business models as well as business plans? The two subjects are intimately related and understanding models is integral to write a plan that will produce a profitable company.

The main part of this book contains some useful information and some helpful hints for owner-builders. However, beware a major problem that nearly destroyed the reading experience for me. The writing goes until page 272. But the book contains 314 pages. So what do pages 272-314 contain? Look at the cover of the book, where it says "Valuable Coupons Inside! $100 Value". Most of the 42 pages contain full-page ads for the author's seminars, audiotapes, workshops and special reports. To see this for yourself, go to the "Look Inside" feature (click on book picture) and look at the last page of the table of contents. I found these ads irritating, because although this is supposedly a reference book in and of itself, it asks you to shell out $6.00-$99.00 each item for more information. Excuse me, but shouldn't information like "Staying on Schedule" be included in the "Owner-Builder" book? The author offers the explanation that he couldn't "fit" all of this info into the book. He sure didn't have a problem tacking on 42 extra pages of shameless bids for more money. This should definetely be rated among Ms. Spencer's best. The main character (Tess McPhail) was portrayed as fresh & funky country music superstar that is forced to take time out from her very busy schedule to go back home and take care of her ailing mother. What she bargained for is a boring stay in the too-small town and painful reminders of her less than grand past. Tess eventually becomes entangled in a heart-warming adventure into the many stages of love and gains the wisdom to realize that there is much, much more to be gained in the giving then she ever thought she'd lose. Country music fans will adore this glimpse into the life of a star. Especially delightful are the backstage views of Nashville and the lonely road to stardom. This is a story that will leave you wanting more, as every LaVyrle Spencer novel does.

However, the most helpful sections of this book--eg, instructions for blemish/acne treatment, inside information about product ingredients, etc.--are covered more succinctly and clearly in Begoun's other work, which also includes a ton of useful information on specific skin care and makeup products.
