Illustrated Dictionary of Science (Illustrated Dictionaries) Review

About 15 years ago, as a 9 year old, I read the three books that make up this Dictionary of Science (the Biology, Physics and Chemistry ones). I was completely captivated by them, and read them over and over again. The science is pitched at exactly the right level for children: the colourful illustrations and short sections retain a child's attention. I went on to take biology, physics and chemistry A-levels at age 17, and went on to study Medicine at Cambridge University in England. Obviously there was more to this achievement than the Usborne books I read as a child, but I honestly do attribute much of my initial interest to them.

Biomedical Device Technology: Principles And Design Review

Biomedical Device Technology: Principles And Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most biomedical technology books, geared for a technician or technical overview, do not offer much knowledge of the plethora of biomedical systems currently in use. I have been pleasantly surprised by this book. The first part of this book does a good job of discussing signal measurements, transducers, biopotential amplifiers, and electrical safety. This is fairly standard material which can also be found in other books. The author provides a good overview here.
The second part of the book examines a large number of medical devices. There is very little BMET-oriented material that is not covered. There is just enough information to understand the basic principles involved. This is where the book is a great improvement over the many other books I have read. The author does a good job of keeping most of these chapters short and to the point.
One thing noticeably missing from this book is imaging systems (X-ray,CT, MRI, sonography). At over 500 pages, the author was wise enough to not try to include imaging systems. Imaging systems could easily have added another 500 pages.
Something else that is, thankfully, missing is any voluminous discussion of pertinent regulations. Too many biomedical books focus far too much on the regulatory aspects. The regulatory aspects belong in a separate book. Chan discusses some of the most important of these, and then moves on. Bravo!
This is not a textbook. There are no end-of-chapter questions. It is a good reference book for anyone working with medical equipment. It contains enough breadth and enough depth to be useful to students and to technicians in the field. I hope that AAMI will place this book on their list of suggested books for the CBET certifications. This book is not sufficient for medical equipment designers. For designers, turn to Bronzino.
I hope to see a second edition of this book in the future. If a second edition is planned, I would like the author to add a chapter (after electrical safety) on electrical safety analyzers. I would also like to see a bit more included in the mechanical ventilator chapter. But this is minor nitpicking. The book is good as is. For anyone who deals with medical equipment, including the operators, this is a good "keeper" book.

Don't let some of the negative reviews that appear here put you off -- this is an excellent resource. Essentially the book lets you diagnose what your child might have and then lets you know whether you a) need to take your child in to the doc or b) you should relax. Anybody who expects more out of a book like this is dreaming. As for organization -- I recommend using the index in the back of the book. Helps you find things fast. My wife and I swear by this book; it is something we give any friends or families who have children for the first time. Highly recommended.

Miserly Moms: Living on One Income in a Two-Income Economy Review

Miserly Moms: Living on One Income in a Two-Income Economy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first read this book a few years ago when I was working full-time and thinking about becoming a stay-at-home-mom. After reading this book and putting some of the advice into practice, I cut thousands of dollars from our spending annually. For example, I used to spend $150 a week on groceries for a family of 3 (at that time). We now have 4 people in our family, and spend about $70 a week! THAT'S $3,100 A YEAR SAVED just on groceries.
Her analogy on what it costs to work as opposed to staying at home went a little overboard. But generally, her message that most American families CAN afford to live off one income came across loud and clear -- and, having been through the transition myself, I couldn't agree more!
Having led a similar lifestyle as Ms. McCoy's prior to quitting the work force, I could absolutely relate to her struggles and determination to spend less, so therefore I "heard" the advice she was giving. If you put into practice just a little of what is in this book (especially in attitde towards money and cutting on groceries), you will save thousands per year.
A previous review speaks to the fact that this book contains much information that is in other books on this subject. True, but basically they're all the same (just like workout videos!). The personality of the author and your ability to relate to their particular situation is what determines if you like the book and their advice. I personally thought Ms. McCoy was smart, determined, and had conviction, so I admired her.
I highly recommend this book to beginners!

Mrs. Barnes does a wonderful job at delivering practical advice for women (and men!) to help them make the most of their time! At first, I was very skeptical about her writing - how could a career homemaker possibly know what a working mother goes through? Guess what? She does! I have only used a handful of tips from her book, and already I feel a lot more relaxed and have more time! My favorite tip is the 15 minute total-mess-to-total-rest routine. It's amazing how much one can accomplish by breaking chores into 15 minute intervals. The bible verses that she uses are helpful as well, but this is a great book without it (as a Christian, I am glad they are in there). I have ordered 3 more of her books, and I highly recommend this book for the woman (or man!) who wants to clear the clutter and chaos out of her (or his!) life!

Cherry Hill's Horsekeeping Almanac Review

Cherry Hill's Horsekeeping Almanac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my opinion, this is the best new horse reference on the market, and of special value to new owners, regardless of whether their horses are 16 hands or 30 inches. The author's unique approach to caring for our horses year-round is so logical, one wonders why it wasn't written earlier!
A wealth of information is offered in easy-on-the-eyes layout and color scheme, with charming illustrations throughout. The book is organized by season for temperate climate regions, with additional suggestions for adjusting the information for other climate conditions. An innovative "five-season" plan covers Late Winter (January-February), Spring (March-April-May), Summer (June-July-August), Fall (September-October), and Early Winter (November-December).
Everything and anything a horse owner needs to know or do is included. Upcoming January, for instance, gives information and details about the following: performing a late winter visual examination of your horse; horses and weather; setting up records for the coming year; checking feet and preparing for the farrier; cold weather feeding rules and suggestions; calculating your horse's weight; dealing with winter predators; parasite control; care of teeth; winter grooming; pasture & fence maintenance; sanitation and manure management; tractor maintenance; tack inspection and care; income tax overview; and, preparing for foaling season.
Who guessed so much needed to be done in January?
Scattered throughout these 576 information-packed pages are tidbits about wildlife, horse movies, ranch recipes, language trivia, and historical horsekeeping. The author includes sidebars with tips for living comfortably with horses. "Horse Sense and Safety" includes recommendations for moving around horses: "Either walk around a horse well out of kicking range or move around the horse by staying close, with your hand on his hindquarters to let him know you are there. Never walk under or step over the tie rope." The book has a full index, website resources for horse owners, and a list of recommended reading.
If I still owned horses, this book would be my constant companion!

Keeping horses healthy and happy is all about establishing good routines and following the natural cycles of the animals and the land. Nobody knows this better than Cherry Hill, professional horsekeeper, lifelong horse lover, and author of more than 30 books on horses. If it involves horses, Hill knows what to do and when to do it. Her routines — daily, monthly, and seasonal — are the framework for Cherry Hill's Horsekeeping Almanac, a goldmine of horsekeeping knowledge for all horse enthusiasts. Month by month, Hill touches on every issue likely to affect horses, horse farms, and the people who care for them both. Each month opens with a brief description of what's happening on the farm, followed by personal notes on specific, month-appropriate topics. May, for example, includes advice on grazing, snakes, composting, bathing and clipping, and fire strips. November features colic, fire ants, winter water, dry shampoo, and outdoor horse clothing. Every month includes recurring reminders, to-do lists, reference charts, climate notes, equine wit and wisdom, a word of the month, and an "Ask Cherry" section featuring seasonally relevant excerpts from her newsletter — all the fascinating tidbits, lore, and handed-down insights that make almanacs so fascinating. Tying everything together is Cherry Hill's trusted voice and deep-seated knowledge of horses. This is a book readers will keep on hand to welcome each new season on the farm. Horsekeepers will browse it frequently, use it as a reference in times of doubt, keep reminders in it, and come back to it year after year — a reminder of their own horsekeeping seasons. It will become, in Cherry Hill's words, a Horsekeeping Master Plan.

At first I didn't get this book because of another reviewer's comments. But, I like Covert Bailey's books so much that I decided to go for it. I'm glad I did. There's different material here than in Smart Eating -- greater depth. The prior reviewer mentioned "Bailey units," which is not a concept in the book. I suspect the reviewer was referring to the target units used to analyze food for serving size, calories, and nutritional value. It's similar to other units, points, or exchange models. I found the target unit analysis very useful as a tool for checking up on how I'm doing. I've been very successful eating low fat and have lost 46 pounds, but a recent analysis of my eating using the concepts in this book revealed some room for improving the nutritional quality of my food. Someone new to the target concept might need to do more analysis at first to get used to the model. The circular target chart is a bit clearer in Smart Eating, but The Fit or Fat Target Diet doesn't have all those recipes. Great stuff for analyzing food quality.

The Houseplant Encyclopedia Review

I checked all my local bookstores for the right book to give to a friend who is always asking me for "horticultural advice" on his collection of houseplants. I grew up in a family of wholesale flower growers, and have 30 years of experience with my own houseplants. This book is the best I've seen. It has a very complete (about 125 pages) section on cultivation, light, water, placement in the house, patio, or balcony, containers, re-potting, nutrients, overwintering. It's wonderful for neophyte houseplant enthusiasts, and has much to teach me as well. I especially liked the extensive pests & problems section, which had actually recognizable pictures of plant symptoms, and charts of how to solve the problem. A unique addition are very useful non-chemical alternatives, including herbal concoctions, to getting rid of pests & diseases, (essential for pet lovers like me who love their animals as much as their plants). After all of this, there are the photographs! Not just the usual plants for beginners, but also a separate section of 150 "Specialties & Rarities". Each picture has info on flowering time, placement, care, propagation, pests, & uses. Throughout the book are prominently placed concise "TIPS" for quick & easy reading both in the general info section and amongst all the photos. Now that I've got one for my friend, I need a copy for myself. An incredible book for the price!

This is a great book if you are interested in getting into the skincare business or just want to learn a little more about it. The only major error in this book is, the term (pore) is used ALOT in place of the term (follicle), this would not be a problem if you are an esthetician and know the difference but for someone who does not, it can be confusing. This book has all parts of the house from roofs, exteriors, doors and windows and every other part of the house in here. It also breaks down into sub sections like different types of roofs for example asphalt shingles, wood shingles and so on. It list common problems found in these areas, the cause or signifacance and also provides solutions. It also has some good pictures and diagrams for examples. Granted this book is only 41 pages long and cant possibly cover everything and solutions listed are the most common and general and may not always fix the problem because not all problems are the same fix. Bottom line from me is it is a good book to have for anyone that wants to learn more about houses.
