I am really enjoying this book. It has a lot of great sounding recipes (I haven't made any of them yet, but can't wait to start experimenting) plus it contains a lot of great information about why we should and shouldn't eat certain things. I've wanted to get this book for a while now, and I'm glad I finally did!

This is a WHY TO COOK / nutrition book designed to help you balance your own body chemistry and have fun in the kitchen. Foods that are not appropriate for a healthy chemistry are not found here. ALSO, for the first time ever—HUGGINS' SECRETS! Well, Huggins and a dozen or so scientists and researchers who have been instrumental in actually causing the chemistries to move. The information that is usually given only during Dr. Huggins' lectures on body chemistry is included in mini-chapters throughout the book. YOUR GOOSE ISN'T COOKED...YET! contains over 230 recipes that have been tested to make them taste better than the average health cookbook recipes and contain what is necessary for a healthy body chemistry. Good tasting meals, yes, but the real value is in the explanations of what it takes to really create a healthy chemistry. What do carbohydrates do to your chemistry? How much protein is enough, too much or too little? How do you know? How much salt do you need? What kind? Same for fats. How about fish as a source of protein? Based on what? Valuable information that makes the difference between good health and excellent health is available for the very first time. Now you will know what Dr. Hal A. Huggins recommends after 33 years of balancing body chemistry, and, more importantly—why!

From The Soil To The Stomach Review

From The Soil To The Stomach
Average Reviews:

The book is an eye opener and a must read if you want to get healthy. I already knew that the big agri-businesses are NOT our friends and control 90% or more of what we eat. Like the tobacco companies they will lie to us about what is really in our food. Folks, it's all about money. Greedy CEO's invented mortgage deviratives. Similiarly, greedy CEO's of big agri-businesses invented fake food which is responsible for many of our illnesses and dieases including cancer.
"Soil to Stomach" will explain to you how depleted how soil is, why we need trees (they are the lungs of planet earth), how dead our water is; how we are cuckolded to eat dead food that has no nutiritional value. We intuitively know that the food we are eating is not healthy for us but we are physically, emotionally & mentally too tired to do anything about it. Fake food does that to you. Look around - we are a nation of "dead man walking".
Kelly tells you what is real food. The problem is that who has time to find or grow real food. We need a revolution where "we the people" must start demanding real nutritional food and that we hold the government accountable for approving such disasterous food products such as aspartame and trans fat or for approving flouride in our drinking water.
The book will get you started on healing yourself. There are several chapters on major and minor detox routines. I started doing a simple foot soak with the mustard & caynne pepper. Slept like a baby the first night. She also talks about supplements, lifesyles and offers several healing programs for specific illnesses.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. Because the MORE people who start demanding better health through real food and water then the better off "We the People" will be. This is not just about healing yourself but about healing our country where many of our kids will grow up to be sick adults before they are 40 or 50 years old. We need to take back our health from the big agri-businesses and government.

Few people today understand why they aren't well and can't seem to heal simply because they do not understand the connection between the soil, the stomach, and disease. Most have been raised on manufactured foods and are at least two generations removed from any real involvement with the soil. What did our ancestors know about food that we don't? Why is each generation suffering from degenerative diseases at earlier and earlier ages? What happened to the healing skills of our ancestor? From The Soil To The Stomach takes a powerful and enlightening look at these questions and the reasons why we are not well in America

Healthy Mom Review

Healthy Mom
Average Reviews:

Everywhere you look nowadays it seems like someone is offering advice on nutrition and it is hard to separate the fact from the hype. You hear things like 'high protein' or 'low carb'...or terms like organic and natural. Not to mention that trying to analyze the ingredient list on your package of food seems to require a degree in chemistry! Iva Young's book Healthy Mom is a down to earth, easy to comprehend guide to understanding nutrition and what the human body actually DOES with it.
I really liked the 16 tips the author gives on how to make sure your child develops healthy eating habits. Simple guidelines like leading by example, setting a schedule, and getting kids involved in food preparation. There is no way we are going to conquer the childhood obesity epidemic if we don't start following these recommendations!
I found it interesting that the author not only includes nutrition information but also discusses how our bodies actually USE those nutrients. Helping people gain a greater understanding of human physiology is a great way to get us to change our current diets.
The chapters in this book are all clearly labeled and are kept brief and very focused on the topic. The writing is simple to understand and you don't have to be a nutrition major to figure out what is being said.
I really loved that the author included information on artificial and natural sweeteners. Personally, I am against any artificial sweeteners at all but, as the author states, the FDA has recognized them as safe in certain levels. I have to disagree with them but the author does a good job of remaining neutral on this topic.
There is a nice discussion on organic foods and Ms. Young recommends moderation if necessary to help control cost. Organic is a method for producing food...it is not a health claim! I did disagree with one sentence in the book that stated you could believe the product was organic if it said so on the label. There are often a lot of false claims and I like to see the USDA organic seal, personally. Or, meet the farmer who grew the food!
Remaining topics in the book include things like whole grains, reducing salt intake, fruits and vegetables, etc. The last half of the book is reserved for shopping lists, meal plans, and recipes. I didn't find this section all that helpful since I refuse to measure, count calories, or use structured diet plans.I prefer the method of 'eat healthy foods when you are hungry' method of dieting, myself, although others may like a more structured program.
All in all, a very helpful book that is laid out in such a way as to make it easy to understand. A detailed look at nutrients in our food, how to make sure we eat a balanced diet, and a reminder to avoid the 'hype' of the next great diet plan and just use common sense!Disclaimer: As per FTC guidelines, I received one copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I received no monetary compensation. All opinions expressed here are mine and mine alone.

I purchased this book at the suggestion of a friend while I was recovering from Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery..(a triple bypass). I was in need of information that would help me recover and take me forward to avoid needing surgery in the future, to bring me back to a state of good health and to find ways to do it with little disruption. I had a few other books given to me, or suggested. I have found that The New Living Heart Diet is an amazingly complete "how to" manual for someone with heart disease or is trying to prevent it. I would reccommend it to a friend.

At first I didn't get this book because of another reviewer's comments. But, I like Covert Bailey's books so much that I decided to go for it. I'm glad I did. There's different material here than in Smart Eating -- greater depth. The prior reviewer mentioned "Bailey units," which is not a concept in the book. I suspect the reviewer was referring to the target units used to analyze food for serving size, calories, and nutritional value. It's similar to other units, points, or exchange models. I found the target unit analysis very useful as a tool for checking up on how I'm doing. I've been very successful eating low fat and have lost 46 pounds, but a recent analysis of my eating using the concepts in this book revealed some room for improving the nutritional quality of my food. Someone new to the target concept might need to do more analysis at first to get used to the model. The circular target chart is a bit clearer in Smart Eating, but The Fit or Fat Target Diet doesn't have all those recipes. Great stuff for analyzing food quality.

Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Fourth Edition Review

Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

I am a Dietetic Technician student and this semester for our Medical Nutrition Therapy I class, we didn't have a book, so it made the semester difficult. I was going through the library and found a copy of Nutrition and Diet Therapy by Peggy Stanfield and was astounded. After each chapter, there were chapter questions and the answers were provided on a different page, but it gave you a tool to study by. Because we had to pull information from so many places, our notes from the class, probably over 500 pages if not more and it possibly wasn't all valid information or it could of been questionable because it was off the internet and some sites are trying to sell you their products. So information that isn't studied or researched enough, pulling it off the web is like accepting someone's bias as the truth. This book is concrete, measurable, accurate, up do date with the RDA's Recommendations. Each chapter covers a different topic, such as Nutrition and Diabetes, or equations to find someone's BEE, TDE, %body fat, etc...this book has done a superb job laying it out, organizing it and putting the most important information in the book. It is easy to understand and follow even if you aren't entering into a medical or nutritional field, but just interested in different topics and how nutrition relates to it. This is the book for you. I'm sad I found the book at the end of the semester because I was so impressed with the content, how thourouh it was and the reviews. Definetly two thumbs up.

Long Life Now: Strategies for Staying Alive Review

Long Life Now: Strategies for Staying Alive
Average Reviews:

After reading this book and using the "Core Recipes" as my basic diet, I have lost 25lbs but most importantly I have cut my blood pressure medication in half, I don't have any gout anymore, I don't have any bowel issues, and I just feel a hell of a lot better. It also educates a person on causes of cancer, heart disease, etc. Hitchcox is extremely well read and to the point. He backs up his statements with references. Although I think a few points were probably taken out of context to support a view of his, overall he states the facts and cuts through all of the propaganda. It is a great book. I've never reviewed a book before but this book is too important to the health of other people to keep quite about it.

4 Ingredients: More Than 400 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes Using 4 or Fewer Ingredients
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
`4 Ingredients' has as its' purpose meals that are quick to prepare, using, of course only 4 ingredients and fewer utensils so there is less time used for clean up. There are optional hints, such as this freezes well or good to serve with....
There are recipes for; breakfast, appetizers, sauces and salsas, lunch, sides, main dishes, desserts, for children, and drinks. A list of staples for the pantry is included, combination meals, and home tips - like put baby teething gel on your eyebrows to avoid pain when plucking them.
Some recipes turn out not quite the way you assume they should taste like, such as scones using lemonade in the ingredients. Others are good ideas that turn out to be hits like curry in deviled eggs. These are simplistic meals, but many recipes such as the ever popular spinach dip suffers from a lack of spring onions and chopped water chestnuts since that would have put too many ingredients in it. The flavors are not dense or complex, but for simple fast meals it does what it sets out to do. With a bit more time and effort they could be so much more, but then they wouldn't be as fast or simple - the choice is yours.
These are very undemanding recipes, a beginning cook or someone who really does not enjoy the process would probably find this a useful book.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low Sodium Meals Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low Sodium Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As someone who has to really watch her sodium intake, I'm thrilled that this book has turned out to be so great. I own a number of low sodium guidebooks and cookbooks, so I've become very familiar with this category. I've only tried two of the recipes so far, but each was an "out of the park" home run. The first was Just-Like-Mom's Meat Loaf, and, forgive me, Mom, but it was way better. And at 115.8 mg of sodium per serving, it was right in the sodium range that I'm looking for. It was easy to prepare, turned out to be moist with terrific texture, and had a wonderful sweet-spicy sauce. And there was plenty for meat loaf sandwiches, which is one of the best things about meat loaf, the left overs for sandwiches! The second recipe was Tasty Turkey-Stuffed Peppers, and it couldn't have been easier. Even with only one pound of turkey, you'll definitely need very large bell peppers or at least two medium sized peppers. And, again, the left overs were terrific. Another very appreciated feature is that most of the recipes don't call for a ton of ingredients, which make these recipes quick and easy, and best of all, low sodium!

Food Allergies and Food Intolerance: The Complete Guide to Their Identification and Treatment Review

Food Allergies and Food Intolerance: The Complete Guide to Their Identification and Treatment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An invaluable reference source that gives a comprehensive discussion of the difference between true food allergies and food intolerance. You will find numerous case histories which help thoroughly explain the ill effects food can have on people. This book explores both sides of controversial issues concerning the symptoms caused by food intolerance, and with scientific data supports the idea that many diseases are related to the ill effects of food. There is an in-depth discussion of Rheumatoid Arthritis, IBS, Migraine headaches, and the use of diagnostic testing. A complete overview of "Bugs in the System" will enlighten all who suspect they suffer from an overpopulation of yeast or unsuitable bacteria in the gut. It will help you uncover food allergies and food intolerances through an explicit step by step elimination diet. The authors have dedicated a complete chapter to explain exactly how to use their three-stage approach to uncover the foods that may be making you feel ill! Stage one of the plan is one month of eating healthy by eliminating foods and drinks that have a drug-like action on the body, such as coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, cocoa, alcohol, sugar, histamine-rich foods and food additives. Stage two is an elimination diet that excludes the most common allergens and Stage three is much more restictive and is designed to help those sensitive to many foods. The authors suggest that your physician performs an examination to rule out any servious medical problems prior to trying this elimination diet. This book is a must for anyone who suffers from chronic, unexplained health problems. It is the most complete source I have read yet concerning the ill effects of food!

Natural Health, Natural Medicine: The Complete Guide to Wellness and Self-Care for Optimum Health Review

Natural Health, Natural Medicine: The Complete Guide to Wellness and Self-Care for Optimum Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is written by a former hospital administrator of just under 2 decades. I have been studying health and nutrition for more than decade. I became very interested in alternative medicine when a family member was diagnosed with kidney cancer and the allopathic doctors (traditional MD's) could give no reason for the tumor.
The purpose of this book is to present a complete guide to preventative health maintenance. With preventative health maintenance described as a timely and appropriate investment of energy in your well being that will save you trouble down the road.
He subdivides his book as follows:

PART ONE: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE (The basic information about designing a healthy lifestyle)
1. What Should I Eat?
2. Answers to Common Questions About Diet and Health
3. What Will You Have to Drink?
4. Air and Breath
5. A Guide to Exercise for People Who Hate the Whole Idea of It
6. Relaxation, Rest, and Sleep
7. Habits
8. Connections
PART TWO: SPECIFIC PREVENTION: OUTWITTING THE KILLERS (Specific advice about reducing your risks of getting the diseases that kill most people prematurely in our society)
9. How Not to Get a Heart Attack
10. How Not to Get a Stroke
11. How Not to Get Cancer
12. How to Protect Your Immune System
PART THREE: BASIC NATURAL TREATMENTS (the tools in the forms or natural treatments that we can use ourselves)
13. Simple Measures
14. Vitamins and Supplements
15. The Herbal Medicine Chest
PART FOUR: A TREASURE OF HOME REMEDIES FOR COMMON AILMENTS (this section deals with common ailments that respond well to gentle, natural therapies and lifestyle modification)
APPENDIX A: Finding Practitioners
APPENDIX B: Finding Supplies
APPENDIX C: Sample Recipes

In part one of the book the doctor does a wonderful job of explaining what we should and more importantly should not eat. The first chapter of the book is worth the price of the book alone. The doctor outlines 9 principles for a healthy diet that he explains in great detail without losing those of us that are not trained physicians or nutritionists. These principles are simplistic but very powerful. If you are a follower of a low carbohydrate diet you will not agree with what you will read in this section.
The doctor also goes into great detail regarding his recommendations for physical activity. He discusses all the common forms of exercise and the pros and cons of each form of exercise. How much exercise do we need? Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise at least 5 days a week. Not much of a surprise, but after you read the section on exercise you will understand why you need that much aerobic exercise, and hopefully that will get all of us off the couch, or away from our computers with a little more frequently. The doctor also discusses stretching and strength training and how much of these we need and why.
Part two of the book, on how to avoid specific diseases, is very well written, easy to understand, and easy to follow for those individuals that are highly motivated. The suggestions will not be palatable to everyone. But, if health is your primary motivation, there are wonderful ideas and suggestions contained in these chapters.

In Part three of the book the doctor has a brief chapter on simple measures that is very informative. In this chapter the doctor discusses simple techniques that we can all use at home to improve the overall quality of our health. I use the techniques in this chapter to feel better when I get a cold, or just don't feel like myself. The techniques really are simple and easy to use, but have a power effect on my overall well being.

Part four of the book covers the resources that any of us would need to follow the practices brought forth in the other portions of the book.
In Summation, I feel that this book is very well written and easy to understand. Once you have read this book I believe it will become your bible for how to maintain optimum health and treat common ailments. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in health.

I am not a body builder in the sense one usually thinks of a body builder. I do not sit in a gym with other muscular men and women and pump iron. While I do exercise vigorously everyday, the body building I refer to in the title of this book, and on the following pages, has to do with rejuvenating our bodies at the cellular level through the use of Nutrients and Ionized Water. What is accomplished by this is nothing short of slowing, if not reversing, the aging process. Much to my amazement, it can be done!
