American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in the Diet Review

American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in the Diet

This is a low-fat cookbook with the words "low-fat" crossed out and "low-salt" written in in crayon. I need a low-sodium diet because of inner ear problems and I was very disappointed with this book. Consider, for example, these two recipes: "Chicken Enchiladas," p.112 and "Spinach Lasagna," p 142. The former has 684 mg sodium per 2-enchilada serving and the latter has 594 mg per serving. Sorry, folks, but this ain't "low-salt." The book does have many low-salt recipes, but the real focus is low-fat. The authors use considerably more space discussing low-fat issues than low-sodium issues and precious little of the latter. Since you're not going to eat enchiladas and lasagna every night (I hope not!), the average amount of sodium intake over, say, a week would be lower using these recipes. This is fine if your focus is to take good care of your heart, but if you're like me and you're sensitive to bursts of sodium into your system, this book doesn't cut it.

25 Natural Ways To Lower Blood Pressure Review

25 Natural Ways To Lower Blood Pressure

I've been reading extensively about HBP ever since I experienced a stroke last March. So far I find James Scala's book most useful. My physician suggested I lower my salt intake and Scala covers various aspects of the role sodium plays in the body's functions including it's relationship with potassium (K-factor). Potassium is awfully important and most of us don't get enough of it, but sometimes it is difficult to get enough without eating too much sodium. Scala has some easy to follow suggestions regarding the consumption of sodium, including "Start each day with a cereal that has more potassium than sodium..." As oatmeal is a winner, I can eat that or another cooked ceral or if I'm in a hurry, I can eat one of the several dry cereals one can pour from a box, such as the Nabisco Shredded Wheat I've eaten since I was a child and others. Dr. Scala is a certified nutrition specialist who has written a number of books addressing the consumption of food and a particular ailment affecting the human body.
One of his better known recommendations is to keep a food diary. I had to buy a special pill box so I could keep track of the pills I consume each day, so it is certainly helpful to note what I've eaten. The other option is to eat the same thing every day, which some folks do, but I can't. Scala says only three things are necessary to keep a food diary: honesty, keeping track of what you eat, and noting the results.
Another suggestion Scala offers the reader concerns fat intake. Most of us know by now that some fats are bad. What you may not know is that some are good for you. Flax oil and certain oils consumed by eating fish are also good.
Scala like most nutritionist covers sugar. Face it guys, we consume too much of the stuff. Sadly, it can be hidden in innocuous looking foods like low fat yogurt and certain "non-sweetened" cereals. Eating complex carbohydrates, more fruits and vegetables (including garlic and onions) and plenty of fiber and water round out De. Scala's nutrition suggestions. You can use Kyolic garlic capsules if you don't want to smell like an asafetida bag, however, garlic is wonderful in stir fries, soup, spagetti sauce, stuffing (made with low sodium bread of course), and salads.
Scala includes tips on dining-out, exercising and stress alleviation to round out his book, making it overall one of the best I've read on the topic of lowering blood pressure.

The Nutrition Twins expertly address the issue of salt in an easy-to-read, easy-to-follow book. There is no mystery to salt, as the experts Lyssie and Tammy explain every facet of salt and its effects on the body, and then go on to teach the reader how to eat deliciously and nutritiously without overeating sodium in its various forms. I followed the ten-day Jumpstart Plan and lost eight pounds! I particularly love the Almond-Crusted Shrimp and the Baja Fish Tacos with Mango Sauce. The recipe section of the book is full of yummy dishes that provide variety and nutrition in every bite.
The book is filled with helpful techniques, such as The Rule of the Hand, which makes it easier to control portion sizes. There is also great guidance in finding appropriate substitutes for salt. The Nutrition Twins have another winner in their second book and I highly recommend everyone, including those with no weight issues, to read this book to bring about increased health by decreasing sodium intake. Buy it - you will be glad you did!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low Sodium Meals

As someone who has to really watch her sodium intake, I'm thrilled that this book has turned out to be so great. I own a number of low sodium guidebooks and cookbooks, so I've become very familiar with this category. I've only tried two of the recipes so far, but each was an "out of the park" home run. The first was Just-Like-Mom's Meat Loaf, and, forgive me, Mom, but it was way better. And at 115.8 mg of sodium per serving, it was right in the sodium range that I'm looking for. It was easy to prepare, turned out to be moist with terrific texture, and had a wonderful sweet-spicy sauce. And there was plenty for meat loaf sandwiches, which is one of the best things about meat loaf, the left overs for sandwiches! The second recipe was Tasty Turkey-Stuffed Peppers, and it couldn't have been easier. Even with only one pound of turkey, you'll definitely need very large bell peppers or at least two medium sized peppers. And, again, the left overs were terrific. Another very appreciated feature is that most of the recipes don't call for a ton of ingredients, which make these recipes quick and easy, and best of all, low sodium!
