The book is an eye opener and a must read if you want to get healthy. I already knew that the big agri-businesses are NOT our friends and control 90% or more of what we eat. Like the tobacco companies they will lie to us about what is really in our food. Folks, it's all about money. Greedy CEO's invented mortgage deviratives. Similiarly, greedy CEO's of big agri-businesses invented fake food which is responsible for many of our illnesses and dieases including cancer.
"Soil to Stomach" will explain to you how depleted how soil is, why we need trees (they are the lungs of planet earth), how dead our water is; how we are cuckolded to eat dead food that has no nutiritional value. We intuitively know that the food we are eating is not healthy for us but we are physically, emotionally & mentally too tired to do anything about it. Fake food does that to you. Look around - we are a nation of "dead man walking".
Kelly tells you what is real food. The problem is that who has time to find or grow real food. We need a revolution where "we the people" must start demanding real nutritional food and that we hold the government accountable for approving such disasterous food products such as aspartame and trans fat or for approving flouride in our drinking water.
The book will get you started on healing yourself. There are several chapters on major and minor detox routines. I started doing a simple foot soak with the mustard & caynne pepper. Slept like a baby the first night. She also talks about supplements, lifesyles and offers several healing programs for specific illnesses.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. Because the MORE people who start demanding better health through real food and water then the better off "We the People" will be. This is not just about healing yourself but about healing our country where many of our kids will grow up to be sick adults before they are 40 or 50 years old. We need to take back our health from the big agri-businesses and government.

I purchased this book at the suggestion of a friend while I was recovering from Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery..(a triple bypass). I was in need of information that would help me recover and take me forward to avoid needing surgery in the future, to bring me back to a state of good health and to find ways to do it with little disruption. I had a few other books given to me, or suggested. I have found that The New Living Heart Diet is an amazingly complete "how to" manual for someone with heart disease or is trying to prevent it. I would reccommend it to a friend.

At first I didn't get this book because of another reviewer's comments. But, I like Covert Bailey's books so much that I decided to go for it. I'm glad I did. There's different material here than in Smart Eating -- greater depth.The prior reviewer mentioned "Bailey units," which is not a concept in the book. I suspect the reviewer was referring to the target units used to analyze food for serving size, calories, and nutritional value. It's similar to other units, points, or exchange models. I found the target unit analysis very useful as a tool for checking up on how I'm doing. I've been very successful eating low fat and have lost 46 pounds, but a recent analysis of my eating using the concepts in this book revealed some room for improving the nutritional quality of my food. Someone new to the target concept might need to do more analysis at first to get used to the model.The circular target chart is a bit clearer in Smart Eating, but The Fit or Fat Target Diet doesn't have all those recipes. Great stuff for analyzing food quality.

I am a Dietetic Technician student and this semester for our Medical Nutrition Therapy I class, we didn't have a book, so it made the semester difficult. I was going through the library and found a copy of Nutrition and Diet Therapy by Peggy Stanfield and was astounded. After each chapter, there were chapter questions and the answers were provided on a different page, but it gave you a tool to study by. Because we had to pull information from so many places, our notes from the class, probably over 500 pages if not more and it possibly wasn't all valid information or it could of been questionable because it was off the internet and some sites are trying to sell you their products. So information that isn't studied or researched enough, pulling it off the web is like accepting someone's bias as the truth. This book is concrete, measurable, accurate, up do date with the RDA's Recommendations. Each chapter covers a different topic, such as Nutrition and Diabetes, or equations to find someone's BEE, TDE, %body fat, etc...this book has done a superb job laying it out, organizing it and putting the most important information in the book. It is easy to understand and follow even if you aren't entering into a medical or nutritional field, but just interested in different topics and how nutrition relates to it. This is the book for you. I'm sad I found the book at the end of the semester because I was so impressed with the content, how thourouh it was and the reviews. Definetly two thumbs up.

I really liked the way this book was organized. It make it very easy for me to identify my most toxic personal areas to work on like sugar and heavy metals. I have lost over 10 pounds and am having my fillings changed PLUS I no longer take aluminum-filled antacids thanks to Ms.Gittleman's wonderful book. I hope to read her others.

I am a Naturopathic Medical Doctor and own several hundred books on health care. Out of all these books, I feel "Choosing Health" is the most valuable. The information in this book is so useful, that I provide a copy to every new patient in my naturopathic practice. It makes my job much easier.
The only other books like this are Dr. Balch's Nutritional Rx, Andrew Weil's Optimal Wellness, The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, and Linda Page's book. I think this book beats them hands down.
This book avoids the common pitfall of most natural health book, i.e. green drugs. Green drugs are herbs or natural remedies that are used like prescription drugs. Each condition has a list of natural "cures", e.g. for headache - Feverfew. Dr. Force allows the reader to develope a plan based on their individual and unique cause(s) rather than the symptom (headache)
This book is unique because it provides comprehensive details on the "elements of health." These are essential lifestyle choices that patients make for themselves. This is the first but most important step in healing any chronic pain or illness. Dr. Force calls these essential elements "functional self care".
Dr. Force also has included a health questionaire section that allows a person to discover their functional health weaknesses. Functional health weaknesses are the organs, glands, or systems that are not working optimally, but have not progressed to the point where they could be identified in a blood test, xray or mri. Identifying and correcting these problems before they manifest in tissue damage is the beauty of this approach. This book provides patients with this valuable tool.

There is great section that helps patients make sense of standard blood work, chem screen and CBC. This is invaluable for the patient that wants a deeper understanding of their blood chemistry instead of their doctor just telling them, "everything looks ok." OK, compared to what? This section alone is worth the price of the book.
The most common complaint in my practice is fatigue and stress. Dr. Force has a wonderful section on the causes and the physiologic effects of stress. His suggestions for improving adrenal dysfunction resulting from stress are comprehensive and very useful.
As a practicing physician, Dr. Force has not put himself or other doctors out of business. He clearly states that this book does not replace health care from a physician. People need both: healthcare and selfcare. A healthy person should get a yearly physical and a health tune up. Others that are not healthy should incorporate the "elements of health" and the functional self care suggestions. If they don't improve, then they should see their physician for health care.
When this book receives the kind of publicity and reception it deserves and people follow the suggestions, it will truly transform our medical system. The conventional medical "disease care" system is failing miserably. This book should be required reading for all doctors, parents, and anyone interested in truly improving someones health.
This is a great book. Do yourself a favor, buy a copy for yourself, a few more for your family and friends, and lastly a copy for your doctor, chiropractor, naturopath. If they won't read it, I'd suggest you find a different doctor.

The book "Food" is by far the best book I have ever read. It definately gives the reader a lot of insight. Susan points out the do's and do'nts and goes into great detail as to "why not". At first, the title of the book did not interest me because I thought "Oh, no! Not another book to tell us not to eat cake, pizza, ice cream." Anybody can tell you that. It's just common sense! She does'nt do that. She truly reveals the facts about FAT and she is not afraid to tell you about the "Big Boys." I like that. It is no longer a guessing game. The information in this book has helped me to lose twenty five pounds, plus! Susan makes sense to me. Her books have not only helped me physically but also mentally. She is a very motivational individual and a true inspiration. I would reccommend the book "Food" to anyone who needs help trying to figure out what to eat and how to get healthy!

The Nutrition Twins expertly address the issue of salt in an easy-to-read, easy-to-follow book. There is no mystery to salt, as the experts Lyssie and Tammy explain every facet of salt and its effects on the body, and then go on to teach the reader how to eat deliciously and nutritiously without overeating sodium in its various forms. I followed the ten-day Jumpstart Plan and lost eight pounds! I particularly love the Almond-Crusted Shrimp and the Baja Fish Tacos with Mango Sauce. The recipe section of the book is full of yummy dishes that provide variety and nutrition in every bite.
The book is filled with helpful techniques, such as The Rule of the Hand, which makes it easier to control portion sizes. There is also great guidance in finding appropriate substitutes for salt. The Nutrition Twins have another winner in their second book and I highly recommend everyone, including those with no weight issues, to read this book to bring about increased health by decreasing sodium intake. Buy it - you will be glad you did!
