The book is very solid, well organized and quantitative at level that can be used by graduate students or senior undergrad. It explains in detail many important subjects that are scattered in other boos. It is worth the price, however the paperback edition is very poor.

I found this book much easier to study from that that big EIT book that is so famous. There are short derivations of equations and many example problems. The economics section was especially helpful for those who never studies economics in college. And best of all: This book helped me pass the EIT with just one month of studying! This book is a handy resource in the working world also.

The Coral Reef Aquarium: An Owner's Guide toa Happy Healthy Fish (Happy Healthy Pet) Review

The Coral Reef Aquarium: An Owner's Guide toa Happy Healthy Fish (Happy Healthy Pet)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Coral Reef Aquarium is a key-fact oriented primer on modern reef system dynamics. Main sections include "Understanding the Coral Reef," "The Environment," and "The Organisms." The concentration on equipping the aquarist with a conceptual framework from which to base their pursuit rather than the more typical emphasis on equipment renders the book valuable for readers at any level. I especially liked chapters on "An Artificial Ecosystem" (where life on the reef is contrasted with life in the tank) and "Material and Energy Flow" (which traces events from the food through all plant and critter life).
Dr. Ron Shimek's style is blunt, to the point, and hard hitting. Where most "beginner" books are written by well studied practitioners, Shimek's book is written for beginners by a biology instructor / scientist. The facts are behind a few unconventional recommendations that liven the well presented material further. Clearly Shimek is on a mission to remove our hobby from the erroneous recommendations earlier books for beginners served up generously. For it's brevity (only 126 pages) and low price it's a 5 star book. I'm rating it 4 stars not because the work isn't excellent, it is, but because I feel the beginner's needs are incredibly broad and it's simply impossible answer the myriad of questions and concerns in 125 pages. Then again, I have yet to see a beginner's book that does.

The number of corals imported into the U.S. rose 249 percent between 1995 and 1996, an indication the coral reef hobby is booming. Concerned hobbyists have begun growing corals domestically so that people can enjoy reef tanks without destroying natural reefs. This book combines information on setting up and maintaining a reef, as well as ecological concerns.

A Haunting on Oakwood Drive: A True story
Average Reviews:

Something is amiss with the other reviews of this "book." The writer must have paid her friends to put out some positive reviews. This self published pamphlet--not long enough or professional enough to call it a book---is not worth your money. I have read just about every true haunting book out there, and trust me, this is junk.
The supposed hauntings consist of the usual noises and some mists. But the quality of the writing, spelling, grammar and syntax are incredibly bad--very few pages without glaring errors.
I would say that minus the huge margins and blank pages you are paying for about 50 pages of misspelled c**p. This "book" and The Wall are the worst true haunting efforts ever to be self-published. Don't waste money.

You'll want to sell your condo in the city and run away to the country.
This book is actually a collection of articles previously published in a magazine in Canada called Harrowsmith. I had not heard of it before but after reading this book, I'm definitely going to look into it.
Articles cover things such as how to lay out your homestead for optimum results (whether you have 5 acres or 40), step-by-step directions for making maple syrup, energy efficient home design, etc. It's a fun, informative book packed with full-color pictures and a relaxed/informative feeling reminiscent of Mother Earth News. The authors keep things simple without talking down to the reader.
It's a good beginner book for people just beginning to think about life in the country, yet there's also something there for those who have lived it for years.

A garden can be grown indoors and outdoors whether you choose to grow a flower garden, a garden for fruit trees, herbs and vegetables, for ornamental non-flowering plants or mix patches of each kind. Wherever your garden location may be, you will always want to start with planning to get your garden in order. You're going to need to work out what you want to grow, when and for how long it needs to be grown, where to plant and how to plant so that you get the best growth. Planning for outdoor gardening involves choosing the right tools, choosing your location, supplying the area with water, soil mixture, sunlight exposure and the use of compost or chemical fertilizers. Always start small and then you can grow it big. Begin with the easiest plants to grow and make sure to do all the critical steps so that you get a full harvest.Planning for indoor gardening involves much of the same basic issues like lighting, watering, fertilizing, soil and temperature control. However, special attention is needed with lighting concerns because unlike outdoor gardens, indoor gardens do not gather much sunlight. Particular thought will need to be given on artificial lighting, the kinds of plants that can grow in little or moderate light, and the indoor drainage system. Garden work can be backbreaking. But, if you have the natural ability to make plants grow well, it will truly show in the end when your garden is in full bloom, thriving and flourishing in all its glory--all set to be shown off!

Where the Germs Are: A Scientific Safari Review

Where the Germs Are: A Scientific Safari
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I disagree with the first reviewer who gave this book a low rating. I think it's a pretty good overview of the details of which germs cause what illness, and how they're spread.
I think the author does a nice job of handling what could be a highly technical subject. The book is comprehensible to the layperson, yet still difficult enough that you probably ought to have had college-level sciences in order to understand its complexity.
I was hoping that the book (especially considering the picture of the kitchen on the cover) would offer me something new regarding keeping germs and illness away from my family. However, it does not go far beyond the standard prevention tactics of good handwashing and modern sanitation. Good handwashing is particularly emphasized.
Diseases and illnesses such as smallpox and lyme disease and West Nile and herpes are handled in detail. It's a useful and factual introduction to bacteriology and contagious diseases, and includes some historical references, in a readable text.

Green Your Home: The Complete Guide to Making Your New or Existing Home Environmentally Healthy Review

Green Your Home: The Complete Guide to Making Your New or Existing Home Environmentally Healthy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jeanne Roberts does a wonderful job in this book explaining how to make your home environmentally friendly, and Roberts explains why everyone should look into doing this. The book opens by telling that our fuel supplies are diminishing, particularly the fossil fuels like coal and oil. Roberts goes on to explain that our large-scale use of these supplies has caused, according to scientists, a 1.08 degree Fahrenheit increase in the earth's temperature, and tells many scientists predict that the earth's temperature may increase by 10 degrees F. by the time we hit 2100.
Because of these frightening predictions, Roberts explains in the book what efforts we as humans can make to reverse this escalating temperature. Roberts opens by describing the important basics which can reduce your energy bill like switching from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents. In another very informative section, Roberts also describes how to fill your home with green friendly appliances.
Additionally detailed are the more expensive efforts which homeowners can take such as installing a green friendly roof. Such a roof is very beneficial because it can significantly reduce your heating and cooling costs all the while it will filter out pollutants and carbon dioxide from the air that is in your house. Roberts, also, does a great job detailing which type of roof to buy and how to go about buying and installing it. Additionally, the appropriate, energy-efficient type of refrigerator is discussed as well as dishwashers, trash compactors, and clothes washers and dryers. Every part of your home which you can make green friendly is described in this book. Also, the book is written in very clean, easily understood language that is rife with cost comparisons that show just how financially beneficial of going green can be. Therefore, all who are thinking about how they can make their home more green friendly or are contemplating building a new home, certainly need to read this book.

How to Keep House (The Lost Art of Being a Man)
Average Reviews:

The cover makes you think this is sort of a joke book but it's really very useful for someone starting to take responsibility for their own space (be it their bedroom or a first apartment). Some of the directions are simplistic (ironing a shirt, for instance) and may require an experienced person to show them the first time but this book is helpful in getting one started. It may take awhile to get a young person to realize that like everything in life, good procedures and correct habits go a long way to making things easier to deal with and unless you can afford a maid or get someone else to deal with it, housework is one of those things that don't go away.

Where's a man to turn when he needs advice on how to keep house? Martha and Heloise are all very well, but frankly, they see housekeeping from a slightly different perspective. Where women view cleanliness as next to godliness, men see a sparkling bathroom as a great way to get laid. In How To Keep House, Sam Martin takes the latter tack, treating housework not as a personal virtue, but rather as a matter of sheer practicality. Organized closets mean more room for more stuff. Cleaning out the fridge reduces the risk of food poisoning. Knowing how to repair a burst pipe beats finding a plumber at 3 a.m. Covering good things like cleaning, laundry, home organization, tools, and maintenance, the book is an indispensable companion for the 21st-century man who can network a bank of computers but who can't iron a shirt to save his life.

Yosemite and The Southern Sierra Nevada: A Complete Guide, Including Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Death Valley and Mammoth Lakes (Great Destinations)
Average Reviews:

David Page may have invented a new genre - the literary travel guide. His book starts with natural and cultural history - "Contexts" - the back-stories to the remarkable places he describes in graceful language.
Page has skied, climbed, walked or driven to all of these places and this shows in the how-to-get-there chapter called "Into the Hills".
Each area chapter, Death Valley, Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra, Mammoth Lakes, Sequoia Kings Canyon and Yosemite, has more context stories and exhaustive listing of places to eat and stay, and things to see and do. The book is crammed with details: you can get rattlesnake empanasas at the Furnace Creek Inn, the location of the only Indian restaurant between LA and Carson City in Nevada, where to check the white-water flows on the Kaweah River, the temperature of Keogh Hot Springs and much more.
Describing the highest, lowest, snowiest, driest, sunniest, and arguably some of the most beautiful places in the US, this book is a splendid resource for exploring a remarkable land. This is a book worth reading, even if you never get to visit these places. But I hope you do.
