Simon & Schuster's Guide to Garden Flowers (Nature Guide Series) Review

Finally, a book small enough to carry out to the garden with me for reference yet compact with enough information to enable me to find answers to my basic questions regarding best locations, season, size, appearance, care, possible difficulties, etc. I found the illustrated key next to each written description and picture of each plant to be extremely helpful and time saving for quick reference as to whether or not I want a plant based on its's being suitable for the location I want and the purpose intended for the blooms. All I have to do is flip open the book to the desired page, glance at the illustrated key symbols, slide my eyes over to the colored photograph of the actual plant and I know in less than 10 seconds if the plant may be suitable for my needs. I can then read the clarifying information and firm up my choice. The photography is very clear and the write-ups simple enough for a beginning gardener, such as myself, to understand.

Simon & Schuster's Guide to Garden Flowers is the perfect complement to the popular Complete Guide to Plants & Flowers, also available in the series. Aside from the pure pleasure of seeing the most exquisite flowers in the world in full color and reading about them, gardeners and flower lovers are here offered a history of flower gardens, gardening techniques, and suggestions on how to create and maintain a blooming garden. The entries for 369 species of garden flowers present full-color illustrations and detailed descriptions, and are arranged alphabetically by genus (with synonyms and common names as well). Mary Ellen's Complete Home Reference Book Review

Mary Ellen's Complete Home Reference Book
Average Reviews:

This book is fantastic. It provides guidance on just about every home/housekeeping problem, from how to fold a fitted sheet to how to remove smoke odors from a room to how to restore wood furniture and paint a room. It makes practical recommendations (like purchasing cleaning products from a janitorial supply company) and is very easy to read. I recently purchased another housekeeping reference book, Home Comforts, and was disappointed because, in my opinion, there was no way I could meet all the expectations discussed in the book for keeping my house clean. Mary Ellen's book, on the other hand, is very realistic and makes suggestions that anyone can accomplish --how to maintain your house without constantly doing housework. It even has a whole chapter of recommendations on how to quickly prepare your home to sell it. I plan to send this book to people as a housewarming present.

Chemistry Connections, Second Edition: The Chemical Basis of Everyday Phenomena (Complementary Science) Review

Chemistry Connections, Second Edition: The Chemical Basis of Everyday Phenomena (Complementary Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are a lot of books out there explaining the chemistry of everyday things. For sheer readability, I recommend Prof. Joe Schwarcz's series of books, which are readily available on Amazon. The shortcoming of Dr. Joe's books, and most books for the general public, is that they aren't really meant to be a resource for teachers of chemistry. They only include the most basic of explanations that the layman can understand.
Thus, the need for a book like "Chemistry Connections." It contains the same "basic-level" explanation for a layperson, but also has a second explanation for each subject giving details on a more scientifically rigorous scale. Then there's a section of references (often reputable websites, vetted by the authors) for people that want to get even more in depth.
The way the explanations are written, and the choice of topics, makes this a resource best suited to the high-school chemistry classroom, or to a "liberal arts" (chemistry for non-chemists) university course. The explanations tend to be a little thin for a true freshman-level calculus-based chemistry course. That's not to say that a thoughtful professor can't make great use of this book for any level course - the choices of chemical questions are varied and thoughtful, making it a great reference when planning lessons.
The book is not perfect. It does not have the zing or flow of many other books for sheer readability - it's best used as a resource to give ideas for presentations and lesson examples for high school or liberal arts courses. There are some typos - there is a pentavalent organic carbon (horror of horrors!) in one diagram, for example. Finally, some of the detailed explanations tend to wander off-topic, for example, explaining how polymers are synthesised in a section on polymer structure. While interesting, it was not relevant to the particular question at hand, and likely to be confusing for the student.

I've never really cared that much about what I used on my face or if I had on make-up. But going out one night, my friend got me to try a full face of make-up, and I looked pretty good. This book helped me do it on my own. It was a great starting point, easy to follow with great pictures. I learned how to take care of my skin better and it looks healthier. I also found with the help of the color chart some new and different choices to make with my clothes, and it even suggested accent colors to compliment your main outfit color. You can't always wear black! The skin type chart helped me realize that I actually have combination not oily skin. Oily skin would be especially oily in your t-zone and then all over. By answering the simple questions, I went in search of products more suited to my skin type. Great, straightforward book.

The Herbal Body Book: A Natural Approach to Healthier Hair, Skin, and Nails Review

The Herbal Body Book: A Natural Approach to Healthier Hair, Skin, and Nails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a lot of great info and recipes, but if you are not an experinced soapmaker, you probably will not have the ingredients you need. First there are a lot of things you have to get at the grocery/drug store: distilled water, glycerine, corn meal, oatmeal, olive oil, baking soda, cornstarch, honey, vegetable oil, vodka, witch hazel, epsom salts, castor oil, etc. Then you have to get a lot of things from mail order or specialty stores, like essentail oils, jojoba oil, coconut oil, herbs, sea salts, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, benzoin, beeswax, cosmetic clays. Another point you have to take into consideration is that about 1/2 of these recipes have to be made each time you use them; you can't store them. There are some recipes you can make and store, but not a lot. However, if you do have a lot of these ingredients, and want to make homemade products for yourself, this is a great book to buy. It is definitely worth the money. And if you are even remotely interested in getting this book, then you must be interested in herbs and natural body products, so you probably wouldn't mind purchasing the ingredients.

Tiny Home to Call Your Own: Living Well in Just Right Houses Review

Tiny Home to Call Your Own: Living Well in Just Right Houses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book thinking it would help me design a small dwelling, but was disappointed. It doesn't contain house plans to compare or copy or detailed descriptions of handling essential systems (heating, plumbing, etc.). Instead it's more about psyching the reader up-- encouraging the reader that it is possible to live in a smaller home, how it could be good for them and the world, how there are issues they might need to deal with (e.g. getting rid of stuff).
That's fine I suppose, but the product seems a bit odd, since anyone who picks this book up to read it probably already believes its arguments on some level. And even those arguments are more anecdotal than systematic. This isn't research as much as it is a recounting of the authors' experiences with a certain kind of semi-suburban, semi-rural client, which again is fine, but it lacks scope and perspective.
I imagine that many readers are like myself, and are looking for more practical info about design and systems. For those things I would look to books like Lester Walker's A LITTLE HOUSE OF MY OWN: 47 GRAND DESIGNS FOR 47 TINY HOUSES and (for interiors) Cristina Paredes' SMALL SPACES: GOOD IDEAS. Both those books cover spaces of less than 500 square feet (unlike many books that are supposedly about "small" spaces and start at 1000 sq ft or larger). The Walker book has some great examples of small dwellings in American history. The Paredes book is a more urban, interior-designy book, but it mostly sticks to a level of artistry that is conceivable for many readers.

Impress your neighbors with style and freedom rather than with larger-scle impersonally built square footage. Small is beautiful in housing. Smaller scale homes can be more livable, cozy, magical, homey, enjoyable, low maintenance and easy to clean. They can be more affordable and socially responsible than the current trend of MacMansionization; that is chewing up our farm land. Some tiny homes can be built on existing lots without requiring new land purchase. You can live in an attractive, appealing, upscale house AND have a home that is quality built, architecturally beautiful, highly marketable and profitable. Uses for tiny homes include: A home for anyone who wants less space to take care of in exchange for more time, freedom and money. As a personal getaway away spaceAs a tax-ductable home office, professional work space, writer's or artist's studio, As a rental for passive income. For an elderly parent, student or return-to-the-nest kid to have an independent place of their own, yet be close by. Kitchen Witchery: A Compendium of Oils, Unguents, Incense, Tinctures, and Comestibles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased Kitchen Witchery from a local bookstore and returned it the next day. Normally a fan of Weiser books, I was shocked to find blatant plagiarism of so many other (mostly Llewellyn) books. This book is a mixture of the entire Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews by Scott Cunningham with a few other sources from authors Laurie Cabot and the Farrars. Daniel has so very thinly paraphrased Cunningham's own words (example: "always stir clockwise" becomes rewritten as "stir clockwise always") that I am amazed this was published by such a reputable firm as Weiser. The worst part of this collection of "secrets" is that Daniel has listed identitcal recipes from other authors but CHANGED THE INGREDIENT AMOUNTS as well as left out important information about safe handling of the ingredients. This book reads like a garbled online Book of Shadows and is an insult to the hard work done by the authors listed in Daniel's bibliography.

25 Natural Ways To Lower Blood Pressure Review

25 Natural Ways To Lower Blood Pressure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been reading extensively about HBP ever since I experienced a stroke last March. So far I find James Scala's book most useful. My physician suggested I lower my salt intake and Scala covers various aspects of the role sodium plays in the body's functions including it's relationship with potassium (K-factor). Potassium is awfully important and most of us don't get enough of it, but sometimes it is difficult to get enough without eating too much sodium. Scala has some easy to follow suggestions regarding the consumption of sodium, including "Start each day with a cereal that has more potassium than sodium..." As oatmeal is a winner, I can eat that or another cooked ceral or if I'm in a hurry, I can eat one of the several dry cereals one can pour from a box, such as the Nabisco Shredded Wheat I've eaten since I was a child and others. Dr. Scala is a certified nutrition specialist who has written a number of books addressing the consumption of food and a particular ailment affecting the human body.
One of his better known recommendations is to keep a food diary. I had to buy a special pill box so I could keep track of the pills I consume each day, so it is certainly helpful to note what I've eaten. The other option is to eat the same thing every day, which some folks do, but I can't. Scala says only three things are necessary to keep a food diary: honesty, keeping track of what you eat, and noting the results.
Another suggestion Scala offers the reader concerns fat intake. Most of us know by now that some fats are bad. What you may not know is that some are good for you. Flax oil and certain oils consumed by eating fish are also good.
Scala like most nutritionist covers sugar. Face it guys, we consume too much of the stuff. Sadly, it can be hidden in innocuous looking foods like low fat yogurt and certain "non-sweetened" cereals. Eating complex carbohydrates, more fruits and vegetables (including garlic and onions) and plenty of fiber and water round out De. Scala's nutrition suggestions. You can use Kyolic garlic capsules if you don't want to smell like an asafetida bag, however, garlic is wonderful in stir fries, soup, spagetti sauce, stuffing (made with low sodium bread of course), and salads.
Scala includes tips on dining-out, exercising and stress alleviation to round out his book, making it overall one of the best I've read on the topic of lowering blood pressure.

Solar Home, The (How-To Guides) Review

Solar Home, The (How-To Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a compliment to other books on the subject this one would suffice to add some detail, but I certainly am glad it's not the only book on solar home building I own. The material seems to be presented from a limited, but technical, scope of understanding. Although some technical and accurate information has found it's way into the pages of this book, I have found it on all levels to be missing what ever mysterious combination of qualities makes a good user friendly how to book. From my reading of other books on the subject what fresh material and/or thought this book brings to the subject seems to be either contrary or obsolete. The methodology in this book seems particularly biased to a very limited way of covering the concerns of anyone interested in passive solar homes. Again this book could potentially supplement a reasonible collection, but I'm glad it's not my only book on the subject, and I'm certainly glad that it wasn't my first book on the subject! I'm not saying that this book is all wrong, but I find it to be far from alright! If you haven't bought a book on this subject yet, keep looking...I reccomend THE PASSIVE SOLAR HOUSE by James Kachadorian instead, it is more complete and more in touch!
